Can you sell me the appeal of Baker?

Where does he play?

Who does he push out?
I cant really sell something I'm not invested in haha.

All I would say is that he makes our team better, that's not debateable. I'd play him in the 22 over Emmett very comfortably. Would I want to give up the late 1st and 600k a year for the upgrade, not really

I think Baker is going to be coming back to WA personally and WC makes no sense so get ready to lose that Port pick (which I'm confident will be the worst of them) to the Tigs
it'll be all about the $$ surely, really not keen tbh

I just dont see WC invested enough to want to give up a draft pick for him. Why? Whats the point. If he was a FA they'd offer a shitload but you'd think losing an early 2nd (plus possibly change since they are pretty fair normally) isnt appealing

yeah fair, hope they want to bring him in as a leader for the rest of their young group as looking at their list here, I can't imagine they have very many guys older than him (freshly turned 26) come 2026 given a few of the 'younger' guys in that group have had pretty persistent injury issues now (barrass, sheed and ryan namely, sidenote how is rotham still on the list?). given he's not an fa we are the more logical fit but I just can't see him bringing that much improvement for us with a late first and 600k ish salary.

I think they'll keep going for fringe older players like Hunt as FAs for leadership, it's a smart ploy and makes sense. Yeah, I cant sell Baker, I dont think the upgrade is there to justify the price he'll cost but the board should probably brace itself coz I think he's more likely than any of the Sydney names

Baker has West Coast written all over him if he moves. Can't see him coming here.
I always had that thought as well but I just dont see anyone over 25 wanting to join WC with where they are at and I dont see WC wanting to give up the capital. We'll see, not fussed either way

What's the precedent for the trade price of someone like Baker. I'm struggling to remember many examples of utility flanker types being traded for top 15 picks out of contract. Even as an acknowledged good player you'd think he's going to struggle to command even an end of first round pick on its own. Surely more pick upgrade territory.

Basically Schultz but out of contract IMO

I don't see how Shultz is relevant. Firstly he is a genuine forward not a utility forward/back/wing. Shultz kicked almost as many goals last year as Baker has in his career. And it was a sellers market. I know he played the personal reasons card but Collingwood still had to produce overs to get him in contract.

Without actually doing research I've thought of someone. A half back flank wing utility, Pick 17 outright: Sharrod Wellingham. Sharrod was also 3 years younger and was traded at the top of his value. Although it was a while ago and probably teen picks were less valued then I think that's about the absolutely ceiling and it would likely be less than that.

They might get more in points value by trading him for multiple pick upgrades, but I can't see anyone trading say pick 14 outright for him which I think was what the Tiges fans are barely satisfied with in the Baker thread.

Yeah, I'm going to be nicer on the DTFA board, I dont agree with 14 for an out of contract but it's within the margin of error, especially from a supporter of the team he plays for and I recognise I'm always optmistic on what we pay in the end anyway. Arguing semantics for this time of year. I'd expect he'd cost something in the late teens and I still think Schultz is applicable as a very similar level player

If Port say finish second and and its pick 17 -> goes goes out to say pick 20. Still feels like a little bit too much for me but perhaps you're right and I'm into semantics territory.

I think you are underselling Baker a bit here. If you win a club b@f you're bound to be pretty handy. Sharrod Wellingham didn't come close to winning one. Pretty much all neutrals would rate Baker above Shultz (regardless of goals scored). He would easily slot in our team and be a great get.

What position do you honestly see Baker playing predominantly.
