Id say because once Taberner retires it leaves us with Amiss and Treacy. Yes I get we want Jackson as a key forward but what are the actual odds that Darcy stays healthy? Slim at best I think
I don’t think I’d spend a top pick on a projected depth player like that. Use a later pick (probably the idea with Jones) to come and play a role if needed

there's no way in Hades Yeo would come to Freo - can you imagine the aftermath? he has already had Weagles supporters visiting his pub to abuse him

I'm sceptical of elite key forward talent getting picked late in the draft, it hardly ever happens. Having a young developing key forward on the list is never a bad thing. Once Tabs goes we will have a bit of a depth issue imo

There is some merrit to this argument. What happens if Macca re-signs with Sydney and Treacy hasn't shown much by the end of 2024? If a KPF rises into top 5 we could bundle our picks for them.

Why draft a young KPF, it’s not making any difference anytime soon and will be hard to give them games?
I personally think the best available KP player (who is from WA) is Gayle Gerryen, who is a 198cm KP / Ruck type who can take an awesome mark, has good hands, good field kicking and get almost midfielder like numbers of possessions. At this stage I think he will go early second round (maybe late first if he can have a good championships), but he just strikes me as the kind of talent worth taking when you are a club like ours where you have some people on every line but can use some x factor to gain an advantage over other teams. He is like Draper but a better contested mark (others have said they remind them of Paul Salmon and yes I can sort of see that in him).

I think Bo Allan is the next best WA player but still not totally convinced by the hype; I think he is a decent big-bodied back flanker but not sure he is worth paying more than a mid 20s pick; his disposal is not good enough to justify higher for a HBF, and at this stage he is not a midfielder.

An interview with the Top 4 WA prospects (IMO - well Otis Harvey is may be ahead of Van Der Stryf but anyway....):

would love to get Bo Allen

I can’t see Darcy and Cox playing much past their current contracts tbh.

Once they retire we would’ve had to replace 2x quality key defenders, a gun third tall and one of the best rucks in the league.

We cannot afford to wait 5-6 years for a KPF to really make it. Guns like Jye Amiss and Logan McDonald might make an impact before that but realistically won’t hit their absolute peak.

Even if Treacy doesn’t improve whatsoever I’d actually rather draft some gun small forwards tbh.

Logan McDonald would be an upgrade but guys like Eric Hipwood make Treacy look like Wayne Carey. Brisbane we’re unlucky to not win a flag with an absolutely useless second KPF - why can’t we with an okay but not brilliant KPF.

Surely given our current list holes, Champion is the one we should be following closely of that lot, if we don’t get McDonald, we just extend Tabs by a couple of years to give Jones and Knobel a chance to develop in case Darcy is injured again.

Key defenders are a dime a dozen every draft. They are the easiest key position to fill. There are also many WA players we can target via trade such as Taylor, Busslinger, Daniel Curtin to name a few. There will be more on the list in upcoming years. We also have Draper (who I see as a Cox replacement) and Davies developing.

Gun young key forwards don't need to wait 5 years to make an impact. With Amiss and Jackson in the forwardline, they will get the third best defender. It all comes down to who is available in the draft this year. I don't want to target a small forward/key forward unless they have class written all over them.

Negative, we don’t need to draft a key forward
Defo shouldn't be a target in the sense of going out of our way to draft one, but if they're the clear best available at the pick it's difficult to not pull the trigger. Especially if either 1 of the picks is really high (all aboard the Collingwood death ride) or we trade multiple firsts to move up the order a la Bulldogs with Sanders now that it appears there won't be a big fish available that's worth chucking multiple firsts away for (you never know though, given we offered for Gulden it appears our approach is "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take").

I am just not sure that Champion is a player of that much interest with a first rounder - firstly, I am not sure that he will end up a stay-at-home small forward, but more a high flanker/small midfielder who gets around 20 possessions and a goal on average. If we look at forward flankers, I actually think Cooper Simpson who we already have on the list has more mobility and speed and much more penetration on his kick and is about the same if not more accurate than Champion (I think both are somewhat deceptively inaccurate).
Simpson is also a much better size for AFL than Champion who is 172cm; Simpson is 180cm. Champion also doesn't lay on that many tackles (also an issue for Simpson), although he can be a feisty competitor out on the field; just not sure that people will see that translating to AFL as well as it looks at WAFL level. Both have to increase their endurance as well.

Yeah I loved the look of him last year, if it’s a later first round pick it wouldn’t be the worst to have him developing at Peel with no rush to bring him in I suppose

I reckon Freo will most likely like to trade someone BIG...ish. They're entering a window now and don't want to add too many more raw drafted talents that take 3-5 years to fully develop. Maybe that costs 2 of the picks.

But I reckon it would want at least 1 to take to the draft. Obviously McDonald is the likely target given the WA connections, bit if I put my Fantasy Hat on and played devils advocate, I'd love the club to just load up all 3 picks and maybe some chump change and offer it to North for Larkey in a massive shock deal!! The man kicked 71 goals for North last year. 71!

Hell of a player and about as likely as me becoming Prime Minister, but if Freo wanted to get ruthless, that's what I'd be doing. Slap some wonga on the table, offer North some godfather currency.....ready made KP forward who already score 70 odd goals in a fairly ordinary team. Oh boy...!

I'd do that deal.

I like it👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When is he contracted to at the Kangas.
But no way Kangas do that deal.

I don't know. But funny team the Kangas; might be a bit addicted to getting all those picks of late. Chuck 'em a whiff, get Larkey some WA hottie flashing a bit of skirt on his holiday.....somewhere. Who knows

Like I said; fantasy stuff. But he's a serious player. 71 goals for a team that lowly is ridiculous

Not sure i have seen anything on this on here but…

Busslinger is playing vfl as kpd currently. Was a first round draft pick a couple of years ago but hard to break into bulldogs atm.

Any possibility of dockers targeting him as a future AP or luke ryan replacement? In contract but woulda thought he would be after more opportunities at afl level?
Not quite sure how he would get more opportunity with us. Ryan and Pearce would have 3+ years to go, and we have 3 KPDs developing at the lower level.

A possible trade involving Murphy if going home is an issue.
