I would guess that with JUH staying at Dogs McDonald will likely be off the table

I’ve cooled on him a bit like others based on Treacys stratospheric trajectory.

Still need someone mature and proven goal kicker to fill Sonny’s role very soon
Can’t afford to wait for rookies

Baker is that guy .

Just looking at the WA under 18's squad from 2016 that Liam Baker played with and there's quite a lot of successful draftees.

Baker missed out and didn't get drafted until the end of the next year after moving from West Perth to play with the Subiaco league side.

Against the Allies in the Under 18's, he got a shirtfront as he was kicking a goal on the run from about 50m and his parents were there on the boundary line as he went off on a stretcher. Maybe was considered too small.

I think Jake Waterman was the captain of that side on that day, although I do remember it was the big ruckman Jeremy Goddard calling the players into a huddle when the game stopped for Baker's injury.

A couple of seasons ago Ross Lyon on Footy Classified (talking about Richmond) mentioned that when he was coaching Fremantle that he tried to get Liam Baker onto our list.

Baker also played for Subiaco in the losing WAFL Grand Final against Peel in 2017 so it could be he doesn't have much of a liking for Fremantle as there are a few players from that Peel team like Ryan, Cox, Darcy and Taberner that are still on our list. Also remember Zac Dawson had to go and contest at the tribunal for high contact against Baker after the WAFL 2nd semi-final.

I suppose Baker would have more connection with West Coast. Schofield being the coach at Subiaco and now at West Coast and some ex-teammates like Waterman, Rotham (who is probably borderline delist) from the U18's and Liam Ryan from Subiaco, though often these past connections don't count for much and it would be whichever WA based team offers the best contract.

I don't know if Baker is what we are looking for as a small forward crumber, and probably wouldn't be used in that role exclusively, although he played a bit of that role at Subiaco in the WAFL and a bit at Richmond. The assets I see that Baker has is being quick and he has a penetrating kick. I feel like a lot of our players can't kick long or don't want to risk taking a ping when they're in space around the 50m. Only Frederick out of our forward 50m players. Maybe Young and Johnson from the midfield could be goalkickers and Sharp is one that seems to gives himself a chance from that range.
Good analysis 👍

Wagner is safe in my opinion. We need more depth players that can use the football or as soon as we get an injury our skills at afl level go down. Wagner footskills against West Perth on the weekend were superb.
He's a 27 year old (28 next year) who hasn't played a game this season.

Like it or not he's a long way from safe. Unless you're genuinely a best 22 player or in a spot where there's limited depth not playing any games at his age, even if it's because of injuries, can put him in trouble if list spots get tight.

Well they knew how old he was when they drafted him. I highly doubt they drafted him just to keep him on the list for two years and let him go. He's next in if any of our smalls get injured and is very good depth.

Apparently he grew up a big Eagles supporter.

Jones is the other one that needs monitoring, you dont want to be a rookie pick then miss half the season. I think Nod is in a lot of trouble, so is Wagner. Sturt might be saved from lack of forward options but is treading thin ice.

Corbett
Kuek
Tabs
Noddy
Wagner
Hughes

I imagine those names at a minimum and because Reidy provides sort of KPF depth by helping keep Jackson forward, they might try to keep him. I will be very angry if they let Stanley go
A bit harsh on Wagner. I know you’ve got to let some go but he is one I would keep. I reckon big Max Knobel will be developed enough by next year to keep as depth. Not sure we need both Reidy and Max. I would personally keep Max, as he probably offers more upside going forward.

What would our team look like this year if we'd offered Fyfe and Walters 1 year deals and they'd finished their careers elsewhere for longer deals? Absolute no brainer. Keeping a team together is much more important than letting important leaders go for nothing to appease fans who want their contracts to be one year shorter.

Also what harm is there having Will Brodie and Jaeger on the list? How is it actually hurting us? Oh no we have excellent mature depth, what a s**t place to be in
Issue with JOM is playing over others who we need to have a good look at-Erasmus, Stanley.
At least JOM had an impact against the Tigers and showed some of what I was expecting at the start of the season.

I have no problems Brodie being held to his contract for when Fyfe is injured or retires. He’ll get his chance.

Knobel still in Peel reserves, do you think he’ll have come far enough to ruck AFL with one more preseason? Seems unlikely but yes, it is harsh on Wagner, there’s always one or two harsh calls, that’s AFL lists unfortunately

My thoughts that no one asked for:

Banfield - Tough one. Ideally one year extension but I doubt he takes that if he's offered more somewhere else.
Williams - Depends on our NGA prospects. Likely delist. But keep on another year if no one else. Injury prone.
Wagner - 2 year extension. Think he's really underrated.
Hughes - Delist.
Stanley - 1 year extension.
Corbett - Delist.
Taberner - Delist. Back issues too big a problem.
NOD - 1 year. Promising 2022 and underwhelming 2023 onwards but riddled injury and illness. Give him another chance to get back.
Odin - Delist. Concussion recovery an issue.
Voss - 2 years.
Sturt - Delist/1 year depending on forward depth. Into his 6th year so he's really pushing it.
Kuek - Delist. Harsh but that ACL really came at the worst time. Again pending other forward depth.
Emmett - 2 years

Then there's the two rucks which I have no opinion on because in my mind they're both excess to needs and only play if both Jackson and Darcy are injured at the same time.

The harsh call this year will be Sturt
Coaches gave the impression that they were impressed with Sturt across the preseason. I'd say he'll be given every chance to get back into the side. His body is his biggest hurdle to making it at this stage.

I really don't like that people aren't giving NOD the same allowance that they give Sturt. Can guarantee NOD has had more impact in the AFL across his career than Sturt has.

I'd say his lack of versatility is his biggest hurdle. It's why someone like Banfield gets picked over him every week.

By 'people' if you mean Big Footy posters then that's irrelevant. It's the club that makes the decisions.
It's irrelevant when it comes to list management decisions. But it's relevant in discussions on this board.

Not at the end of last year, he was a regular. Unfortunately Sturt currently is on the endless injury comeback tour and so needs some touch and conditioning.

The "versatility" thing is a bit of a weird one to use though.

But he was a regular because of injuries and lack of depth. This year he's been overtaken by Banfield and Voss. Unless Banfield has a few more games like he did on the weekend I highly doubt we see Sturt force his way into the team without injury. Banfield has solidified his spot in the team by being so versatile in his role and being able to cover forward, back, and wing.

Who does Sturt come in for if he's performing well in the WAFL?

He played because he performed well.

But he’s in Perl reserves through lack of opportunity in the seniors (mainly because of Reidy). I watched them both in pre season and believe Knobel offers more than Reidy. The main thing is I don’t believe you can keep two because the only way they get a game is if both Jackson and Darcy are injured at the same time which seems unlikely.
