I'd be all in on using our draft capital to bring in pace and attacking smarts in the mid/small range. You're likely to get high-level ready-to-go skills in that sort of size range as well. Gulden is a classic example of a number popping up. It could be trade or draft or combination of both given what we'vegot.

We're up for the gamble of Darcy resuming lead ruck duties, contract willing, and then being able to deploy Jackson (and Treacy) where and when we like. At this stage Knobel, seemingly more mobile, is a better fit for a back up role. Darcy's going through some issues now, but it's not out of what any ruck (or tall) anywhere might have gone through at some point. On the flip side he's had a good couple of years of continuity just before the current struggles.

we acquired Lachie Schultz for an already sucked chuppa chup and got a first round for him - swings and roundabouts

GC got stuck with Lachie Weller, and we got pick 2. They also got nothing for Sharp, so a score for us again.
I was thinking about that Weller trade the other day. I can't remember the Gold Coast list manager (who it was) in the room at the time looking rather nauseous, or like they'd just a really hot asian curry with mad amount of chili and their throat was burning. It was total daylight robbery, but it was classic :tearsofjoy:

I personally think the best available KP player (who is from WA) is Gayle Gerryen, who is a 198cm KP / Ruck type who can take an awesome mark, has good hands, good field kicking and get almost midfielder like numbers of possessions. At this stage I think he will go early second round (maybe late first if he can have a good championships), but he just strikes me as the kind of talent worth taking when you are a club like ours where you have some people on every line but can use some x factor to gain an advantage over other teams. He is like Draper but a better contested mark (others have said they remind them of Paul Salmon and yes I can sort of see that in him).

I think Bo Allan is the next best WA player but still not totally convinced by the hype; I think he is a decent big-bodied back flanker but not sure he is worth paying more than a mid 20s pick; his disposal is not good enough to justify higher for a HBF, and at this stage he is not a midfielder.

An interview with the Top 4 WA prospects (IMO - well Otis Harvey is may be ahead of Van Der Stryf but anyway....):

I have seen a young fellow called Thomas Cathcart play since Auskick.
Great skills can play forward or back. Was all Australian CHB in under 16 championships 2 years ago.reminds me of Brennan Cox.
Only knock is genuine speed , But hasn’t held McGovern back has it?

Is Chris ‘Rocky’ Gerryen Kayles dad…
Uncanny resemblance and thickness through the upper thighs and hips….
Chris was a Copper, and had a very big arse he utilised to advantage 😬

I reckon Freo will most likely like to trade someone BIG...ish. They're entering a window now and don't want to add too many more raw drafted talents that take 3-5 years to fully develop. Maybe that costs 2 of the picks.

But I reckon it would want at least 1 to take to the draft. Obviously McDonald is the likely target given the WA connections, bit if I put my Fantasy Hat on and played devils advocate, I'd love the club to just load up all 3 picks and maybe some chump change and offer it to North for Larkey in a massive shock deal!! The man kicked 71 goals for North last year. 71!

Hell of a player and about as likely as me becoming Prime Minister, but if Freo wanted to get ruthless, that's what I'd be doing. Slap some wonga on the table, offer North some godfather currency.....ready made KP forward who already score 70 odd goals in a fairly ordinary team. Oh boy...!
I like your idea

Absolutely correct. Some of the trade values being bandied about here for Erasmus and Brodie are delusional.
The Eagles fourth is handy pick. Basically a late third. Otherwise we wait till Eagles get a third - ie trading out someone and we ask for that. I don’t believe Brodie is on massive coin so no need to push out for salary dump. I’d be looking for a third or early fourth. That will be an ok pick for us once picks in that third round have been used to match academy picks and F/S.

Haha lol credit where it's due, the GWS Media team is pretty good.
We used that pick (51 down to 50) for Brandon Walker (Richmond we’re interested in Walker with their second round pick that draft). We removed $800k salary from our books picked up in full by GWS so we could re-sign Mundy.

We could’ve used pick 103 to get Brandon Walker if that was our next pick
We still had Joel Western so needed a pick before 103. Joel Western could have been selected with any random late pick and essentially was. As I said Richmond were very keen with a pick in the mid second round. We had to be prepared for that possibility. If I remember correctly that pick from GWS was actually pick 54 traded from WC for Zac Langdon. They then on-traded that to Freo for Hogan. The biggest factor in the trade being a third round pick was the removal of salary in full.

Also the added points and draft position provided flexibility with Walker and Western. The pick slid forward to 51 as GWS referenced but we then used that pick one forward to match bid on Walker at 50. Was a bit of a slider as expected to go around that early 30 to mid 40 range.

We were tight on salary cap and wanted space to re-sign Mundy at fair price.

Jesse also needed to get out of WA.

I think most agree that Freo made the right decision trading Jesse to GWS based on what happened here (maybe a small minority still believe that it could've worked out and/or that it was worth staying it out until the end of his contract the following year). The cap hit relief for something that just wasn't working here was significant, and with the unpredictable list spot and financial crunch due to COVID we would've had to force out someone else to re-sign Mundy (which we did try with Blakely I believe, but no buyers), and even then we had to move Schultz to the rookie list which became a whole thing last trade period. The only regret I have Freo-wise with Hogan is that we got him in the first place.

However, most people just view trades in a vacuum as "what did I get vs what did you get". And in the same way that Gold Coast will look at the Brodie and Bowes trades and go "we kinda had to do it" but cop grief because us and Geelong got windfalls from it, the Hogan trade was both necessary for us and a windfall for GWS. At best you can say "unlike other teams who did these sort of trades, we didn't have to pay draft capital or a large amount of Hogan's salary to offload him."

North Melbourne risks being like the GC when all their PPs improve and demand more $$$

"Necessary" is interpretation.

What we can say on hard evidence that Hogan was not beyond salvaging.

The CBA of the trade to this point are obviously a long way in GWS' favour. Claims that we had to trade him when we did are really stretching it based on that alone.

There's a good case beyond that to say we aren't putting enough into player retention as well.

Imagine if he set his goal song as Freo club song.
