What round do we think Rex has his farewell game?
grand final hopefully - realistically if the season is a bust like this year, get him to afl life membership and then send him into the sunset

Phillipou wasn’t taken at pick 4 in a weaker draft, why trade pick 4 in a stronger draft stacked with mids?

Keep pick 4

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app
Not saying I would do it but I think the arguments for it are (i) Phillipou has already gone through his 'development phase' and is now, unlike pick 4, (close to) ready to go and (ii) Phillipou is now (somewhat) proven versus pick 4 who remains potential (albeit possibly higher upside depending on your view).

LIfe membership was easier back in the day when we had origin and the Fosters Cup (or whatever that thing was called)
he would have played a dozen (maybe as many as 18) of those games. he would only have a handful of games to get there anyway

(just counted on the AFL website, their preseason stats go back to 2013 - 14 games, and he would have played a few between 2008 and 2012 too)

You say that like Nicks isn't going to play both of them at the expense of someone else.

Even then, what is the point of bringing him to play instead of Murphy, when we're already asking for more game time for the players Murphy is keeping out?
Are we though? Who is Murphy keeping out? I recall thousands of posts calling for Murphy to be dropped, not so many calling for anyone in particular to take his place.
He's not a positional need, he's not a great talent, and he's the wrong age profile for where our list is at, and really we should barely be bidding for him at all given our only competition is a SANFL side or staying in Melbourne.
He's an upgrade on Murphy, which is all he needs to be to improve our side.

You don't meaningfully improve your side by replacing your 4s with 5s

And he's keeping out any number of young would be mids, who could come in while Keays pushes into more forward time, or could rotate

He shouldn’t cost much but surely he’s taking game time away from Murphy not a younger player? We couldn’t possibly play both in the same team playing the same role
Problem is, most forward lines require a specialist pressure player in order to help lock the ball I50, which we were terrible at doing this year. ANB is a huge upgrade on Murphy, or McHenry, or anyone else on our list currently that could play that role, for that matter

It gives us at the very least, a few years to find someone capable of playing that role that doesn’t suck

ANB may not have many years left in the game, but he's better than a "5". He's probably a "6" or "7", which is a material improvement.

We already have Keays, Rankine & Rachele rotating through the forward line. You could make an argument that he was keeping Pedlar out - but Pedlar's form this year was awful, and then he got injured.

Logan Evans winning the rising star nom for rnd 24. I wonder if we considered him in the MY draft and still opted for Murray. I can't see Murray getting a senior game in the near future. Has some talent but not best 22 .

What round do we think Tex has his farewell game?

Depends on his back injury and whether it is something that will only continue to get worse.

He did appear to be moving more freely in the Bulldogs game before copping the poke in the eye. Was probably the best he'd looked all year.

Keeping all of the old guys on would be a mistake though. Smith needs to go and probably Laird too.

I pretty much figured that Tex was going to get the extension. His experience and leadership will still be useful, I just hope he isn't treated as an automatic selection at the expense of the younger guys.
I hope we have done due diligence on his fitness. He showed he was carrying some injuries all season.

with nothing happening during the season he was always going to go around again. not against it at all, give him the pre season to get his back as good as it can, and have him as the 3rd tall and spend time making for and rt the main guys with tex in support. if we could get another 30 goals out of him with the other two pushing into the late 40's and 50's for goals it's pretty good.

He is still 22 games off AFL life membership I think? He is on 278 and I think you need 300?

That would be his goal but I think he might need 2026 to reach that. In the end playing in a side that has missed finals seven years in a row hurts your game count.

I doubt anyone is offering him two years but if they are he should take it. It would be best for him to experience another club.

I don't know if he wants to work in football post playing but if he does he will have to move interstate anyway or commute like Hart and Montgomery have. No way Port take him and we can't really offer him a role until he gets some experience.

If he doesn't want to move the family then he takes what he is offered. That's just part of the work life balance decisions people make all the time.

What was mentioned was 1 year playing and then 1 year coaching.

it includes pre season games too or at least it used to so he's probably already there.

I don't think there is any doubt he will kick goals but will need to work harder on his defence. He needs to get himself fit again and injury free. Its puts too much pressure up the ground when his opponent rebounds.

I think the only other doubt was if it was time to move on from the 2017 GF group.

i agree the defence was well down, im just hoping that was injuries that can at least be worked on. or do what good clubs do and hide his weakness somehow.

Can't wait for the same crap to be regurgitated again next year when Tex says he wants to play on and refuses to retire and have a farewell game. Only way this is close to palatable, unlike the chicken hearts I didn't realise I was eating Saturday night, is if it forces them to pay Smith out his triggered extension.

You reckon Tex is the type to just keep playing and playing?
