Yep so the list maths in that situation would be

Senior List

OUT:
Sloane (retired)
McHenry (unsigned)
Gollant (unisgned)
Himmelberg (unisgned)
Bond (unsigned)

IN:
Neal-Bullen
Borlase
Pick 4
Second draft pick (Welsh)
FREE LIST SPOT - this spot would be taken if we retain Bond

Rookie List

OUT:
Parnell (unsigned)
Hamill (unsigned)
Borlase (to senior list)

IN:
T. Murray
FREE LIST SPOT
FREE LIST SPOT

So delisting Bond we'd get three list spots, for a total of six new players. Retaining Bond, we get two list spots for a total of five new players.

How is it possible that after this season and what we saw in terms of performance, our club can choose to keep Smith ahead of both Bond and Hamill? What we consider important is plainly wrong.

I don’t think list management had a choice unfortunately. We don’t know how the games trigger was structured, but Nicks retaining Smith for months longer than he should’ve this year likely played a crucial role in his extension.

Borlase only went on to the rookie list at the end of last year, so doesn't need to be upgraded(?).

So, new maths:

Senior List

OUT:
Sloane (retired)
McHenry (unsigned)
Gollant (unisgned)
Himmelberg (unisgned)
Burgess (nothing says he's contracted for next year, and pay him out if he is)
Tex/ Smith (to the sham that the rookie list now is)

IN:
Neal-Bullen
Lukosious
Cumming
Pick 4
Second draft pick
Welsh

Rookie List

OUT:
Parnell (unsigned)
Hamill (unsigned)

IN:
T. Murray
Tex/ Smith

If Keane isn't going, we would need to delist Bond (or pay out someone else, like Strachan) to get Rosas.

Surely we're spending the 95% minimum, which means we have about $650k we can use to pay him out and free up his list spot. We did it with Luke Brown, we can do it with Brodie Smith.

Can't see Strachan being moved on, we believe we're contending and no way we go into 2025 without first ruck depth.

They had a choice not to put a trigger in the contract

Doesn’t matter how it was structured he obviously needed to play x games this year and it would seem nick’s played him a couple more games than x then dropped him.
How that number was not conveyed to him is mind boggling, especially with his form this year.

True but it’d be reasonable to assume that if Smith were to play 15 games in a year we were meant to contend for finals he’d probably deserve another year on the list. The fault is more towards the coaches, who continued to play Smith despite finals not being on the agenda and Smith consistently being one of our poorer performers.

Smith reached the trigger for automatic extension. Some are arguing he shouldn’t have been allowed to reach that trigger. Didn’t we have a fair few injuries this season year?

We had Nank early in the year ready to step up, when smith was out of form.
Ryan later in the year.
There were options to replace him.

Smith should have undoubtedly been phased out after the round 8 showdown where our defence looked the best it had all year without him there. You could argue after his 250th against Freo he had used up his tickets.

There was cover for him irrespective of injuries that could/should have been introduced following the showdown. Laird permanently to half back (remembering this was prior to Crouch’s injury), debuting Bond earlier to allow Max to become more of a rebounder, or debut to Oscar Ryan.

With a young backline, especially with Murray unavailable for most of the year and Milera not at all, Smith was always going to have maximum leeway before being held accountable for form. Look at the trash that Murphy was able to dish up all year and retain his spot just because he'd played nearly a hundred games. Smith got dropped only when Nix woke up to the fact that the next player up gave him a better chance of winning the 4 points.

We had players that could comfortably cover what Smith was providing. Even then, hitting the trigger doesn't mean we have to keep him on the list, it just means we need to pay out the value of the contract. We did it with Luke Brown, we can do it with Brodie Smith.

Could not highlighted my concerns better.
Crows did not learn from Sloane debacle and gave Smith another year .
We had Berry that might have given us a trade pick but resigned .
We had potential to bring in some good players and we have a quality deep draft and we try to be good boys not make hard decisions.
Or is it just Nicks trying to last another season
Ladies and Gentlemen of the BF Community,

How many community members are angry and seriously pissed off with the ineptitude of the Crows organisation this year, and over the past several years? I seriously struggle to think of any other professional organisation who would still employ people for several years of incompetence across the organisation.

There needs to be an independent review undertaken upon every facet of the Adelaide Crows Football Club organisation. There needs to be a motion of no-confidence moved against the Adelaide Crows Football Club Board.
10 - 15 players need to be delisted as a matter of priority.
There needs to be a new coaching regime implemented at the Club.
The Club needs a new recruiting and list management team.

We are all fans and supporters of the Adelaide Crows, and we all want our Crows to win Premierships, and constantly be in premiership contention. We are now at a stage where drastic action is needed to secure the successful future of our footy club.
