Geelong loaded up in 2001.
Geelong done extremely well with half those picks. richmond have 8 picks in the first 23. The Tigers are going to have to get it right

8 Bartel
17 Kelly
23 charlie Gardner
24 Steve Johnson
40 Gary Ablett
41 Henry playfair
69 M McCarthy
81 D Johnson

Supposed super draft.
Potentially set them up for one.

Both are IFs.

If it is one and if they get it right. Then develop well.

Geelong loaded up heavily in 01 which i guess is still used as the flag bearer for so called super drafts.
That was 23 years ago ( it also included the best father son of all time up until that point in time). Assume there must have been some other super drafts, supposed or otherwise, since then with presumably mixed to poor results for teams that went hard at them

There were about a dozen stars drafted in 2001 and Cats got a third of them: Gaz, Bartel, StevieJ and Kelly.

I can't remember any but there might be 1 or 2. What we haven't seen before is 8 picks in the first 23. Tiger's can't afford to stuff it up

Yeah there’s a reason we haven’t seen before and it’s absolutely crazy stuff
I like it. Having a real crack. I think it'll work. From this haul and next year's first or second - get in 3 or 4 top liners and then trade hard to build a team set for sustained success. They're not doing Ninthmond again.

COLLINGWOOD

Current Draft Picks: 52, 55, 58

The Magpies were more focused on landing Port Adelaide defender Dan Houston during the trade period than boosting their draft hand.

Their first pick entering the trade period was 36 but now sits at 52.

As list boss Justin Leppitsch put it: “You can’t get everything you want”.

Collingwood still believes there will be “some quality players” available to it with the late selections, which should come forward a few spots after bids are matched on father-son and Academy players higher up the order.

Leppitsch has said that key position players will be a focus for the Magpies, particularly those who can light it up the forward half.

Could a player like 199cm Northern Knights key forward Tom Sims, 197cm South Australian swingman Charlie Nicholls or 199cm Greater Western Victorian Rebels ruck-forward Floyd Burmeister slip through to Collingwood’s first selection?

Another Northern Knights player — 196cm key forward Gabriel Stumpf — could be another option if the Magpies want to bolster that area of the ground.

43 Tom Sims, Forward/Ruck, Height 199cm
An exciting prospect, this athletic tall is a great size to be a modern-day key forward and can provide back-up in the ruck.

44 Charlie Nicholls, Forward/Defender, Height 197cm
A marking tall who can run all day, Nicholls showed that he can get it done at both ends of the ground this year.

45 Floyd Burmeister, Ruck/Forward, Height 199cm
A former competitive high jumper, Burmeister does things that few 199cm prospects can.

60 Gabriel Stumpf, Forward, Height 196cm
A unique talent, Stumpf showcased his rare traits as a key forward at the national draft combine with the fifth best 20m sprint of all-time.
"his coach Anthony Rocca labelled him as a player to watch."

We have 3 picks all very close together

No excuse not to take at least two of those options should they still be available.

Other clubs seem to be able to develop low pick key forwards to a reasonable standard. Maybe it's time we try our hand at it too?

Mitch Lewis was a pick in the 70s for god's sake
Ollie Lord was pick 49

We don't have to create a superstar, when a solid contributor will work just fine in our system

You mean like checkers? Not sure what you mean when you say “other clubs seem to be able to”. Outside of larkey you aren’t going to find many late pick KPF dominating. The Coleman race is full of top picks.

Checkers was a mid-season/rookie draft pick no?

Also, I never even talked about anyone dominating

I literally spoke of getting someone up to a "reasonable standard" and being a "solid contributor". I don't expect any of the kids that were listed in the post I quoted to turn out to be Nick Larkeys.

If one happened to? Awesome! But I certainly don't expect it.

I'd just like for one of them to turn out to be a solid contributor.

We actually have two who were drafted late (admittedly only one by us) and have been better contributors than Lord or Lewis. With McStay and Checkers, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with us and our KPFs - they're really solid players. I do hope we draft one this year though as neither are young.

I also forgot about big coxy! We’ve done pretty well tbh. The issue we’ve had is we haven’t had that top 10 pick to nab the elite ones

There's no real fuss. Again we're also referring specifically to the draft. the last time we took a key forward in the national draft was Chris Dawes. Or maybe Liam McMahon?

As you said, the two we have are older and will need successors.

People understandably want to know that a kid is coming through. Seems fair enough no?

I don't know. There's this one bloke who wants us to recruit Weideman to add to our short term KPF stocks ...

I do think he'd be an OK option if we had lists of 52, where you could afford to run heaps of depth. But at 42 with the need and desire to have some developing players, you can't run that much depth.

And every year there's a clamouring for every NQR KPF who might be available.
