If we'd identified 6 candidates worth the trade-up, I'd be somewhat of a waste upgrading all the way to pick 3...

All the draft analysts are comparing Jagga Smith to Zac Butters. Is that a valid comp?..l would love a Butters clone in our midfield.

He’s not as physical or explosive as butters (obviously he has scope to develop) but there are similarities.

If Troy Makepeace is correct about North needing to take Tauru at pick #2, then I reckon you could start measuring FOS up for a Carlton guernsey with pick #3

Zak wasn’t doing the inside work Jagga did this year as an 18 year old. Provided he puts on some size, I expect him to have better contested possession and clearance numbers than butters. Not as good a kick as Zak tho
Size aside Jagga reminds me of Daicos more then Butters.
Butters has always been a very direct player. Wins the ball then takes off. Busts through tackles more often then he evades them despite his size.
Jagga more like Daicos. Super awareness and very slippery. Can't touch him. As a junior Daicos was quicker and a better kick. Jagga better around stoppages. Similar endurance profile and ability to rack up the ball.

That’s true, but a lot of talk of the Tigers being in love with Finn that’s why they are so keen to get pick 2 off North
(Have just watched a 3-4 min vid. of the main contenders being talked about - the 1st one found in search highlights. Based only on these: )
Smith - Agree on the ref. above to NDaicos traits seen in how Jagga carves through, was the first thing I thought too
Draper - thought there’s some Judd like traits with the explosiveness and intensity
Would be excited about either of Smith/Draper joining our midfield, and, also impressed that much of their performances were against the big boys in VFL / SANFL
Lalor - looks great marking up forward, but appears to be playing as a forward target ?! Small sample seen, so no view on midfield prowess
FOS - did not look as explosive as those above, or to have a great set of plays/disposals in the vid I saw, so again only small sample seen, so perhaps there are other highlights for him that puts him in the top few discussions?
On first cut, see Smith or Draper being instant boost to our team in contention now, as well as exciting prospect for long career with the Blues
Open minded about others as I trust LM will be doing lots of due diligence. On that point…
Think a lot of it’s about inner drive and hard mindset - think Selwood, Hodge, Judd … ie. not just skills

Again, Smith is the safe option, he likes to go backwards with the ball though...
Draper has a higher ceiling imo, his kicking is the concern many have with him, however, he did improve that quite a bit this year imo and with scope for more improvement at AFL level, he could be very damaging. The Judd like traits are accurate imo.

I mean you did mention speed that FOS didn't have. He definitely does, along with agility, athleticism, a great leap and marking skills.
There was evidence of FOS breaking lines this year. Just not as much as last year for obvious reasons.

With all of this criticism of FOS, I have to wonder why so many have him in their top 2 in phantoms this year. What are they seeing that this board is not?
OR, they offer us Pick 2 for 3 & 38 and a handshake we dont take Tauru

Why would we do that? They want Tauru. We don’t want him. We would be just giving up a good second rounder in a deep draft for no reason. We will get a gun mid at 3 whichever way it goes. And then likely a solid KPD at 38. Then Campo boys later. Very astute business by the club this off season. Can’t wait to see how it ends up.
They are unbiased - plenty don’t want to get on board a player and then have us miss out.
Much safer to be backing in others that are very likely to be available at pick 3.
The ol “we got our target” as opposed to we missed our preferred.
Stupid thing is we obviously have at least 3 players identified as a great pick 3 or we wouldn’t have traded up.

Yeah I saw someone here talking about Cerra’s role in your future midfield. And he reminds me of Tom Powell, especially they way that they are thrown all over the ground.
Once north draft FOS or Draper, a guy like Powell is pushed further back.

Fortunately sheez and Kerch can play outside the cba. As can FOS if he ends up at North.
Because if we traded up to target FOS, it would pretty much deliver him to us. The Tiggs could take him at pick 1, but there'd be a riot on Punt Rd if they didn't select their Dusty clone.
Don't forget that pick 38 may well get swallowed up by the B Campo bid, so we may well be looking to move it on anyway. Norf get a 2nd round pick this year as well as Tauru, and we'd be asking for a future pick as part of the trade.
It could look something like:
Carlton >> pick 3 and 38 << pick 2 and f2 or f3
or
Carlton >> pick 3 and 38 << pick 2 and exchange of 2nd round picks
judd wasn't great by foot himself but got better by using it smarter

Someone who has watched the top picks extensively, tell me this or rank them on each criteria if you like.

I'd say a lot of it is off the back of his performances last year. He was touted by quite a few to be the runaway #1 this year.
He has got a lot of qualities that you'd typically look for... I just rate Smith, Draper and Lalor a bit higher.
His combine results have boosted/reinforced people's opinion too I believe.
I just think that if we're going to put his less impressive season down to injuries, why were Draper and Lalor able to show more?
Draper had shin splints at the start of the season and ended up being one of the best players for the Panthers at SANFL level in the block of games he got there.
Lalor was hampered through most of the year... hyperextended knee pre-season, hip injury playing school cricket, was in a moon boot for his ankle in May, had a quad niggle after that... then high grade hamstring injury... yet he's touted as #1 pick...
What I don't like about FOS, is the lack of ball winning ability... to me, that screams in and out of games... another Cuningham? Only with a better skill set and athleticism? With pick 3, I'd be looking for a mid with a more consistent impact on games.
Then again, I've been wrong many times when it comes to judging these kids coming through... I reckon the most important factor is between the ears... some thrive in the AFL environment, others succumb to pressure and weight of expectations.
