Far from it haha

Let me add to that

"My message was less about the AFL and [more] 90 per cent for us to be as good as we can be as a football club and win despite the inequality. That's the bit that everyone ignored and went straight to the 10 per cent," he said.

"The 10 per cent is that the system is not fair, and I have a voice so I'll fight to make that fairer, but the 90 per cent is for us to win anyway.

"For us to recognise that because it's hard, anything less than our best gives us no chance. Our best gives us a chance and I genuinely believe that.

"That was my key message, not the fact that the system is broken."

Let me add to that:-

Your President is an embarrassment and a sook.

No one here really cares about your Rabble of a Club.

Intial draft concessions? That’s almost 15 years ago for GC. Do GWS have extra list spots?

This is the problem, the entire system is a joke.
Imo you keep academies and FS just get rid of the discount. You shouldn’t get anymore of an advantage then having the choice of taking the player or not. The new point system is a huge improvement.

FA is a lot tougher to fix. Personally I would get rid of restricted FA but raise the years service by one year, Then also get rid of Band 1 and 2 compo.

I agree on restricted free agents. Their offers get inflated so to increase the compo, so their clubs don't match. I am happy for compo to exist but think should all be end of round, not tied to team ladder positions. Do those to things and it pretty quickly becomes less ridiculous.

Fun little exercise - I doubt this will play a huge part in determining who the club chooses, but of the likely candidates how many senior games would people expect to see them playing in their first season with us, and in what role(s)?

FOS -
Draper -
Smith -
Langford -

The first 3 15-18 games all through the midfield.

Langford probably 5-8 games.

"Remember, this is a ranking and not a mock draft. It does not take into account where the players will be drafted or where bids on father-son or Academy players will fall. That will come next week."

He has

Ashcroft
O'Sullivan
Langford

I want FOS or Langford. Could miss both :straining:

Might be veering a little off-topic, but it's ostensibly draft-related, so what the heck.

I reckon the biggest issue with a "no discount" approach is that it only takes one rogue List Manager to tank another team's draft plans with an early bid. The potential exists currently, but at least there's a buffer where you know a bid coming a few picks early will still see you paying "fair" for your player.

I also think the fluid nature of it all is a bit messy. For Brisbane, as an example, the difference between an Ashcroft bid at 1 and an Ashcroft bid at 5 is massive, in terms of how much draft capital they need. Similarly with us - a bid at 37 vs a bid at 39 for Campo completely changes the landscape of our draft position.

Kind of makes me wonder if it would be neater for the valuation of academy/father-son/NGA players to be done effectively by committee. Have each club submit where they would rank each player, say 3 weeks out from the draft. Remove the earliest and latest valuations to account for shenanigans. Average out the rest.

The "market" collectively values Ashcroft at 3, Lombard at 9, Kako at 13, Campo at 46 etc. Then the club tied to each player is notified of the valuations and can make their submission for how they'll secure them. Let them do it using whatever picks they want. Carlton needs 350pts - let us decide if we're using a combination of late picks, or taking 350pts off our first pick. I think it would give clubs more flexibility in securing lower rated players, but would still require clubs with top end talent to pay up big. Removes all the "live trading" crap as well, can't trade down for a million late picks if this is all established pre-draft.

You'd then go into the draft with everyone's picks pre-adjusted for the bid-matched players, and a handful of picks that are already locked in as "preselections" with player X going to club Y.

Probably holes in that idea too, but my wandering mind thinks it's something that could work, and would help fill the media void between Trade period and Draft.

Geez I hope Twomey is on the money with #3 - Only issue with langford is he's "A Richmond Fan"
That’s not much of an issue. Most draftees see themselves as one club players, unless there is a “ go home “ factor involved, i.e. drafting Draper and him wanting to return to Adelaide. How many good AFL players support Carlton and they’ve never come to Carlton? If we draft Langford, he will probably never think about going to Richmond.

The real issue with the draft is a players draft position can massively vary depending on who was taken beforehand.

Brodie Grundy drifted in the draft and I talked to a few recruiters and their statement was he was rated high, they just had someone else higher on the rankings.
Grundy may have ranked 5-10 in each clubs rankings but someone higher on their needs/ability was ranked higher.

I'm not too sure if you've posted previously, but I wouldn't mind reading your opinion on both need and potential of each of the top 5 candidates for us.

Lalor, FOS, Draper, Smith and Langford

Question for draft watchers - how would you group the top 6-7 candidates. It doesn't sound like there is a single consensus number 1, so how many are in the running?

Basically I'm curious as to whether we'll be taking who is left of 3 standouts, or whether we'll still have a decision to make.

(Not including Ashcroft obviously)

I'm not sure my opinion means much. I am purely an intersted observer like most others. I always find it hard without knowing what the kid is like mentally. I would love to hear the interviews

Personally, I think we need leg speed and ball use. BUT at Pick 3 you pick the best player as they all look like guns

I like FOS & Langford as they look calm, are leaders, have size and poise and use the ball well. They both have what we need and will walk into side round one

Just my take but I'll back whoever we take and I really hope we get another pick in before taking Ben Camporeale who I believe will be much better than most expect
