Who should Carlton take at Pick 3 if available?

The reason we got rid of both was due to the sameness they had to the rest of our midfield. Adding a similar type of player in Langford would fly in the face of the list moves we've made thus far.

He has more talent than either, but he still plays extremely similar to Kennedy and to a lesser extent Carroll. He's just projects as an overall upgrade on either.
Actually the reason that we got rid of Carroll was more that we could
upgrade his role with Ben Campo and pick 3. Carroll had taken the Dow break in case of emergency role with his games mainly played when one of our main mids were injured (sub numerous times and subbed out for a lot of the rest). Carroll was at best an O.K. senior player but barring a major injury crisis was going to play reserves fir most of the season. In that case there is no point keeping him if other teams are offering him senior games.

The reason we moved Matt Kennedy on was that we think that Cooper Lord will come on and fill a similar role. I loved Matt but it was clear that the coaching panel thought that we couldn't play both him and George Hewett in the same midfield. Matt did a lot of things well, including playing tough but the roles that were designated for him (if he wasnt playing midfield) needed more pace than he had. Added to that he had some trade value (whilst Hewett didn't ) meant that Matt wasn't going to be comfortable playing half forward/sub/reserves.

So basically the changes to our midfield for 2025 will be out Carroll, Kennedy and some blokes who were always injured and in will be pick 3, Lord, Ben Campo, a hopefully non hamstrung Cerra, a Walsh with a good back, Doc, and maybe Billy Wilson.

We didn't get rid of Carroll and Kennedy to replace them with pick 3 (and as a result pick 3 must be quick). We replaced Carroll and Kennedy primarily to refresh our midfield because it didn't work last year more often than not under pressure. We replaced them because they were considered (rightly or wrongly) to be periphery midfielders and we are hoping that others can take their midfield minutes and improve us.

As a result pick 3 doesn't specifically have to be quick (although it wouldn't hurt). Quickness can be in the mind, in ball movement or in the legs. Plenty of options in what will be available for us. Trusting that Austin can ascertain which player adds to most to our midfield group in the long term.

Paddy Dow simply doesn't have that dog in him. That's why he didn't make it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I heard Paddy Dow ate too many complimentary biscuits when offered.

That ruined his career.

What is Draper's 2km time trial? My worry with Draper is he is a one position player. We already have Cerra and Hewett who are limited as midfielders only.
The game is more endurance based than ever before.
Seriously hope we are considering Langford. The versatlity he brings to our side. He can pinch hit in the midfield and go forward and take big contested marks.

Once he puts on a bit of size will be a huge weapon.

A bit harsh, he worked hard and probably lacked that next level drive. Biggest issue was footy IQ and decision making under pressure.

Doesn't have a 2km on record but did do a 21.5 yo yo test (similar to beep test) 2 years ago. Not the same as 2km but some crossover as it is also a speed endurance test.

Based on that result I think his 2km would be somewhere from 6:10 to 6:30. At worst similar to guys like Jagga, FOS and Langford.

I seriously want Langford.
Everything I’ve seen and read makes me believe he could be the best player “in the future” to come out of this draft.

Yep think he’ll be the best player from this draft. Do we want a guy who bursts away from stoppage with questionable disposal or do we want a guy who can play multiple positions, high score assists, weapon of a boot, and a good size and mark. We struggle with our mid/forward connection and ball retention. Langford helps with that. Acceleration from contest is but one trait. I’d much rather Langford over Draper. I’d take Lalor, FOS, and Smith ahead of him too. All those guys can play multiple positions whereas I think Draper has the least versatility of the bunch. Pick 3 we should simply take who we project to be the best player in the draft IMO. Either way, we’re in a beautiful spot coming into the draft at 3.

Looks like we have a fight on our hands. Crows sound like they know Draper will be gone at #4. Crows trading for Norths pick #2 now looking highly possible
When I put my “sneaky bastard” hat on, I just have to see the angle we could be playing.
Knowing the Crows have historically done “whatever” to get the player they want, it’s an absolute doozy of a move to show so much interest in Draper.
If they move up (knowing full well North are just itching to move back & not be seen as “over reaching” for Tauru) we get who we want.
If it was Draper that was our target, you would think that Voss would have caught up with him before now.
Why spook Adelaide when we could have quietly just picked him.
We play our card close these days, I really hope we are being sneaky bastards - it’s good for the club to get exactly what we want - the Carlton of old didn’t **** around - we just got shit done.
Would love to see that start happening again

Didn’t have the dog?
Bloke is hard, numerous times he got smashed and kept going.
How many other players would have put in as much continued effort absolutely killing it in the 2s over a big stretch for no reward. That in itself shows the character of the bloke.

He worked his ass off & ultimately never had the chance with a fit Cripps, Walsh, Cerra to prove he had stepped up.

Using him as comparison with Draper is unsophisticated & a poor argument.
The players all have their own journeys & much more goes into what makes/happens with their career.

Lazy argument to drag Dow into the conversation, yes it’s pick 3 again & we want a player of greater impact than he gave us - but that’s it, there’s no further relationship than just the number of the pick.

This years top 10 in the Brownlow & where they were drafted.
If you think anyone has any ****ing idea about who ends up elite this should dispel it -

Patrick Cripps pick 13
Nick Daicos pick 4
Zak Butters pick 12
Caleb Serong pick 8 & Isaac Heeney pick 18
Tom Green pick 10
Adam Treloar gws under age pick
Errol Gulden pick 32 & Matt Rowell pick 1
Jai Newcombe pick 2 rookie draft
2023 1st - pick 58 Neale
2022 1st - pick 13 Crippa
2021 1st - pick 7 Wines
2020 1st - pick 58 Neale
2019 1st - pick 19 Fyfe

When I look at that lust my first thought was ...."most of those blokes mentioned above have one thing in common - apart from footy ability and no it isnt the so called 'speed' "- only two of those blokes are genuinely fast.

Draper has the most defensive/chase willingness out of those linked to us. Breakaway speed and ball winning ability another plus. Would probably play the most 2025 games for us of those in the range.

Jagga is the best ball winner but doesn't necessarily break lines and hurt the oppo. Not sure he immediately makes into Voss' midfield but he could give us another dimension in the contest.

Langford has the highest ceiling after FOS but it's a big gamble at pick 3 whether his game will transfer as well in the AFL against the quickest and strongest guys. Gets to contests but will need to evolve like Cripps did to become more powerful to match his strength advantage.

FOS in my opinion had the worst u18 year of this crop but if he can replicate the u17 signs he looks the most like Butters in his line breaking and hurt factor. A lot of projection off his u17 year though, we're all scarred from SPS and LOB that got selected off their under age years.

I have them:
1. Draper
=2. Jagga & FOS
3. Langford

If we were a well oiled machine like Geelong I'd have preferred to keep the two picks we gave up for 3 and taken two of Berry, Lindsay, Trainor, Travaglia.

It's a more even draft but to be honest the top end isn't the quality of McKercher & Reid. Each top draftee has a glaring deficiency.

No Lalor?

I think it’s a lot simpler than all of the above.

Austin said himself we need to add speed. The likes of Carrol and Kennedy don’t provide that. Hewitt could be gone at end of next year as well.

When you are moving on one paced players to add some speed you then don’t draft the slowest midfielder in the top 5.

That’s at least my impression of our approach.

Doc, Wilson and Lord will be the midfield rotations for 2025 along with Pick 3.

Ben Campo could push past Lord if developed right but I'm really excited about Lord. Has great hands in close and tackles well.

Ben Campo and Pick 3 gives us longevity as a midfield force, but our top 4 aspirations lay at the feet, back and hamstrings of Cerra and Walsh
