I hate Essendon as much as anyone, but I'm actually more impressed by those who stuck by the club after the WADA debacle.

I'm reminded of a quote that is frequently bandied about by Swans players and staff when they talk about culture. Everyone who walks through the door is but a mere custodian of the club's history. Generations of people came before them, and generations of people will come after them. It's on that ethos that I could never abandon my club based on the actions of a particular group of custodians.

If it came out that Horse, Harley & Pridham were running an illicit doping program at our club and all our current players were in on it, I'd be pissed, and disappointed, and shattered. But walking away from the club would be to walk away from everything that Skilton, Bedford, Barassi, Round, Kelly & co did, right through to Roos, Maxfield, Kirk, Colless, Bolton & Goodes did.

I think the club has to always be bigger than the people representing it at any given period in its history.

I'd wonder why they failed with their program so poorly

Typical Longmire

I'd probably quit the club until everyone involved in anyway was gone

All part of clarkos plan, they're not in premiership contention for at least the next 4 years. So no point in keeping a solid key back who still has some trade capital to finish 14th instead of 17th.

Stay at the bottom of the ladder, rack up high end draft picks, ask for a stack of afl hand-outs. Front end long term cintracts to young guns. Let the core develop, then as soon as the tide starts turning, move to phase 2, trade in a couple of stars to fill needs then start gunning for a flag.

Clarke knows what he's doing.

Gonna have to nail the draft like Hawks from 01-04ish

So far:
2018: Thomas - sacked
2019: Traded first, picled of Comben
2020: Philips (ressies), Powell (pass)
2021: JHF(traded), Goater(LTI), Curtis (pass)
2022: Sheezel (hit), Wardlaw (early)
2023: Mckercher (early), Duursma (early)

Recent drafts look better but lacking that KPF talent that Hawks had (generational... so unsurprising)

Horne-francis is a gun.

Essendon playing like they picked a bunch of random players to field a team. Absolutely no synergy between players, handballs flying in all directions except for the intended target.

Clarko will make sure they get the drafting right. Just needs to bleed out the old guard and bring in his own choices. Once he's had enough control over that aspect, the ship will be steering in the right direction.

Norf don't need to worry about KPF too much, get the rest right, along with structuring player payments to build a war chest and they'll be able to attract a KPF keen to return to Vic. Especially once they start climbing back up the ladder, it'll be a fairly easy sell.

They have plenty of levers to pull and whether or not you like the guy, Clarko has the strategic thinking and drive to make it work.

We will see.

Think was a perfect storm for Clarko at Hawks.

Right time, right place and right people

Duursma will probably be a gun

But North have nothing down back. How can a team improve when the structure is so shot in the back half and looks like it will be for a generation. No confidence in the fundamentals

Essendon's players have the same problem IMO that Adelaide's players have.

They have no problems finding the footy but no one really wants to be that player to take the game on or just do anything to break the general pattern of any particular play. So they literally end up going round in circles having half a dozen possessions in a small patch of the ground without actually going anywhere.

If nothing else nearly every player in our team is not prepared to die wondering when they get the ball.

Probably, but there's an argument to be made that if there were less teams then there probably wouldn't be a need to 'fix' any of them in the first place.

If one thing's been proven it's that there is not enough talent in terms of players, coaches, recruiters or list managers in Australia to sustain 18 competitive clubs, let alone 19.

How has it been proven?
Do you have some references to back that up or you just going on your "feels"?

Have a very beige mid set up in Parish, Merrett and Caldwell.

Crying out for a damaging player with ball in hand or on wings. Likely hoping for Perkins to become that player for them in mid but need some more potent wings

Essendon edge! 👊🏻

Man that term is so embarrassing for them. Brad Scott is sociopath, but he's a nitwit.
I’m sure there’s some joke there about as much of an edge as a sphere.

Bombers supporters in the stand have already turned on McKay. It’s funny.
