Training 2024 Pre-Season

7 disposals would never come easily for Allison. In fact would be a record haul for him in any level he has played

Lends itself to my theory he will be a wingman. Playing opposite Mason Wood would be a great position for him.
You e forgotten about Liam Henry on a Wing. He has been unbelievable feeding through Hill at HF on to the forward line. Bomner might have more chance running off a Half Back but who do we take out?

Byrnes was looking great at the start of last year before dropping off, hopefully he can build on some of that early form.

I feel like our future wingers are going to be NAS and Wilson, but they both still have to prove themselves (NAS on the wing at least), but for the time being, there's a spot alongside Wood that's up for grabs.

Byrnes has a lot of tools, it's just a shame he doesn't have a bit more size to him. Hopefully he can have a big year and at least generate some trade value.
I feel like NAS on the wing is a bit of a waste. If he was a bit shorter and a bit of a lesser kick then sure, but he’s tall and has one of the best kicks in the comp. That needs to be used in the more prominent positions on the ground, which would be the midfield or off half back where he can set up attacks. You’d never see GWS playing Lachie Whitfield on the wing, he’s ’too good’ for that position. An elite half back never gets moved onto a wing - only into the midfield like Sincs, Dawson, Crisp, Daicos, Young or Laird. You wouldn’t want Nas getting ‘lost’ in those games where the ball is stuck on one side of the ground.

Ultimately, where he plays depends on the development of other players in the team - Hastie, Arie etc. - and what positions require a player like Nas but I do believe he could eventually become a Lachie Whitfield/Jordan Dawson type player that plays behind the ball and sets up the play. The wing should be reserved for the role players like Byrnes, Hill, Ed Langdon, Lachie Hunter etc who are a bit more limited in their attributes whether it’s size or skills

Bonner would need to improve his defence if he is to play half back, got exposed way too much at Port which is why he was moved onto the wing and then eventually dropped and delisted. Pure backup at this point, but has the potential to be B22

Didn’t watch super closely but a few observations from today:

Players look very fit
Windy had a sore back but nothing major
Playing group seemed up & about
Henry was very good - in everything & kicked the ball nicely - very nice pick up
Hill looked super fit
To the untrained eye Hunter looked much fitter (& I’ve been critical of him in the past)
Collard looks like he has some tricks but very slight
NAS & Sincs just never look hurried & always hit the next target - class!
Bonner seemed very prominent in the match sim - really worked hard up & down the ground
Owens will be a very difficult match up this season - powerful
Didnt do a lot but just reckon Garcia will be a good senior player
Caminiti just ran laps
Crouch & Jones worked very hard running laps & some drills - both said they expected to join full training next week.
Leigh Fisher and another AFL umpire umpired the match simulation

Just like last season - very professional training session; the players have a joke but it’s all business when the drills start. We look like a professional outfit!
So when Leigh Fisher umpires an intra club I assume no one gets a free kick, but everyone gets frees against?

Someone mentioned an U18 game of Garcia’s to watch. I took a look at the first qtr and boy is he an excellent contested player. He has that explosive first step to either snag the clearance or tackle. He has some great traits.

Have you got a link for that game?

I saw some footage of him from a school but thats about it so far.

Training Report Friday 19th January

  • Crouch, Caminiti, Van Ess, Jones & Hayes in the rehab group.
  • Pou & Howard both went for a swim at the DFC.
  • No Butler. Also, I didn't notice Sharman.
  • Max & Marshall were called out to the middle where Marshall gave Max a good work out on his shoulder. Max got through easily and was involved in the general warm up with the group. He then joined the rehab group for a short time during match sim, but joined back in main training towards the end.
  • Crouch & Jones will be joining main training next week
  • Owens: I know a lot has been said about him, but it's hard not to take your eyes off him. He has presence. He makes some of our veterans look tiny. He is huge - particularly his thighs which are the size of tree trunks.
  • Liam Henry once again impressive. Very noticeable and his skills are actually really good. I know there was a question mark over his kicking but from what i have seen this pre-season, his skills have been excellent. He seems like he is enjoying being a saint and is very popular amongst the group. He and Hill work really well together and share similar attributes.
  • There was one kicking drill (kicking to a target running directly at you) - this was executed brilliantly, and for me, our skills this pre-season are so far advanced to anything I have seen over the last few pre-seasons.
  • Nas's kicking is elite. He caresses his kicks and I don't think he missed a target today. He's also got a lot of poise, taking an extra second or two to weigh up the options in front of him. He seems far more confident in himself.
  • Riley Bonner, is similar in many ways to Nas, with his elite kicking skills. He's had an excellent pre-season and for me has been one of the stand outs.
  • There was drill which involved bringing the ball into the forward line from the half way mark. A couple of short kicks to either a wide target or a more direct short target, before a long kick to the top of the square. If the ball was spoilt, the defenders then had to work the ball back to the centre of the ground. To me it looks like we still have some work to do with our forward entries, but we look good moving the ball out of the backline. It helps when you have elite kickers like Nas, Sinclair & Bonner kicking the ball out.
  • Hugo Garcia doesn't mind throwing his body on the line. Very courageous and he's a really good size for an 18 yo. Stood next to him on the boundary and I was surprised how built (and tall) he is.
  • Full ground match sim with AFL umpires (Leigh Fischer being one of them). Liam Henry, Sinclair, Wilkes & Tim Membrey were the standouts. At one point, Liam Henry received the ball, broke away from the pack and nailed a kick onto Tim Membrey's chest. It was a thing of beauty. RTB stood on the middle of the wing watching the match sim. I was watching RTB, and it looked to me like he had one eye on where the ball was and the other eye further up the ground looking at movement & positioning of those further up the ground. He was pretty vocal again today.
  • Of our new recruits, Lance Collard did some absolutely spectacular things today. At one point he nearly took an absolute speccy over Jimmy Webster, and then one minute later he was in the back line spoiling Matthew Allison. He leapt up to spoil Allison, landed on his feet, pivoted and then took off - it was a thing of beauty. This kid has so many tricks. He's going to be a handful for opposition defenders and a joy to watch for saints fans. He'll need a bit of time, but he has star written all over him.
  • Isaac Keeler drops far too many marks. He lacks confidence in his ability. There were a few times today where he was one out with a much shorter opponent and had a sit on them, but somehow managed to drop the mark or allow his opponent to spoil. He lacks physicality in the contest. He's not particularly strong in the air but for a guy his size, he has some wheels. It will be fun to watch him develop at Sandy for another year. I can't see him playing ruck - he just lacks physicality at this stage of his career.
  • Stocker is another one who stood out. He was really good defensively particularly against much taller opponents. He's also been really impressive all pre-season.
  • I must admit, I haven't noticed Paddy Dow all that much. He's there and he does some ok stuff but based on what i've seen of pre-season, I can't see a spot for him in round 1. Steele, Crouch, Seb, Clarke, Owens & Windy are all ahead of him in my opinion.
Great report.

Only one from my eyes for the last 2 sessions I've been to is that I absolutely have Dow in round 1 (the 2 praccy games might change that view of course depending on his and others performance).

He is the thing we didn't have against GWS in the final...getting hands on contested ball and breaking away with it at speed and the ball going our way. He did it a few times in the match Sim and the contested ball drill closer to the start.

Will be interesting to see what the outcome is going into Rd1.

Felt for Garcia for coping the hit to his groin area in the in close defender/forward drill. Took the wind out of his sails for the next 10 mins 😳

The ball movement and ball use by hand and foot were good today.
Bonner not only quick and penetrating by foot, he’s very vocal, indicating he’s settled in nicely at his new club.
Mitch Owens was impressive with his capacity to hold his ground in marking contests, then land on his feet like a panther with his second efforts.
Wilkie and Battle stood out with they’re intercept marking, Nas, Hill, Sinclair, Henry and Bonner stood out with their speed and decision making.
This time last year, Steeley just seemed down on himself, however he’s very upbeat and looks extremely fit this preseason.
Apart from ball movement, there was a heavy emphasis on keeping the heat on in the front half, such an important ingredient in today’s footy.

I think a good running side like ours needs 3 wingmen. Some might call it "high half forward" or "outside running midfielder".

We have moved a long way from 3 players per line on a whiteboard.

More what Barrels posted, more a proper KPD with a boot as long as Dusty Fletcher.

There has been a few murmurings that has already had to be pulled into line

One of which that one player had to go and get him to training after he called in ill because of a heavy night

Not sure if true .... but word is that he is bit of a campaigner .... disappointing if true

Source?

I would have thought we’d all learned about posting unsubstantiated stuff on here, and why not to do it.

Definitely truth to those murmurings.

Twas me has a bit of Jack Crisp about him.

Great summary. I was there today and agree with all of that

I think we just need to be mindful that a lot of those ball movement drills lend themselves to a lot of our high possession BP, HB, Wing, High HF etc being set up to move the ball. I think all of those players have been impressive but it does make players like Stocker, Bonnar, Nas, Sinclair, Hill, Henry very prominent. In saying that they all look super fit and sharp with their execution and will all be in round 1 barring injury I believe. Sometimes the inside mids only really touch it at the clearances in those drills and don’t stand out as much. I really liked a few of the clearances from Dow today. He burst away from stoppage (something we don’t have a lot of), think Clark looks the fittest I have seen him & really focused and Steele looks like he’s shaken that niggle from last year and is back to his best.

I think our Midfield selection is going to be the most intriguing part of preseason up until round 1. From who’s in full training today it looked like Steele, Dow & Clark the core engine room with a bit time from Sinclair, Ross, Windhager, Owen’s, Wilson, Garcia etc, you then had Jones & Crouch in later stages of rehab and Pou in the Pool.

For me it’s how well we go in the midfield will define how far we can go this year along with a fit and functioning forward line.

Finally very impressed with our new boys. I think Wilson will probably start in the best 22, I think Hugo Garcia is going to surprise a few and maybe get a few early games if there are injuries, Collard does some things we have not seen in a saints jumper for a very long time, Gus Hastie again slight but very assured with ball in hand of HB and finally big Arie who really surprised me with his size he may have grown a couple of centimetres since his draft measurement.

Others really keen to see have an impact at Sandy and press a case this year - Hotton, Keelor, Heath & Van Es.

And if so - learnt nothing from nearly missing out on his dream. Anyway, all the usual caveats

One snippet to add from today:

Campbell (32 years old), Cordy & Heath ran the final repeat laps together & they finished in that order. Campbell say 20 metres ahead of Cordy (a known plodder) who was say 15 metres in front of Heath.

So those questioning Heath’s tank are spot on.

I was there today and he was a little bit behind but pretty similar to those guys. For me it’s not his tank it’s his footy instincts and craft that I don’t see enough progression in. I don’t see him as close to 1’s as some other onlookers.
