snuck over to melbourne board to check out 3 players, with regards to how chuffed we are to get wilson at 18,they seem to be pretty savage on windsor already, but happy with tholstrup,

their attacks on players leave our most negative for dead, especially tom mcdonald, but while we have our 2 or 3 it seems they are into double figures for whipping boys-brown spargo scache langdon woewodin & that was only reading 2 pages of pre season, another thread about their worst losses ever has a savage attack on goodwin & happily among their list of embaressing terrible losses is the 2015 joey montagna loss to the saints

our boy jb is getting a pretty positive vibe

found this gem,had me pixxing myself laughing anyway

Oliver has done a knee injury or something so he was on the side lines doing exercises and run throughs. He's in good spirits. Joking alongside staff etc. it's good t o see him jovial but at the same time he doesn't have that laser focus. I guess it's hard to have both. At one stage he was chatting to a female fitness trainer and he blew snot out of his nose right in front of her. Call me old school, I just thought he could be a bit more professional.

This s**t is ridiculous.

FWIW, his top games at VFL level have been;

Rnd 4, 2002 vs Suns - 16 disposals, 28 hitouts, 3.0

Rnd 2, 2023 vs Ess - 10 touches, 23 hitouts, 5.1

Rnd 15, 2023 vs Werribee - 12 touches, 44 hitouts, 1.0

The potential is there.
Pre-season boredom on here.
Not much else to talk about except the training reports - great as they have been!
Doesn’t matter that he’s been in the system a couple of years, he’s still a kid, developing to play a man’s position, no one should be writing him off.

Hope JB does well for them.

I’m not sure the comparisons with Marshall are around the mark.
Marshall was very good CHB at VFL the year he got drafted.
He’s a genuine footballer, has a nice field kick, reads the play well and takes a good mark. All traits he showed at underage level but he was an undersized ruckman at the time, and a bit too slow to play CHB at the highest level.
Heath came in raw, has some great traits but after 3 years in the system could still go either way. This year will be very important for him, we would hope to see him consistently tearing teams apart in the VFL for really coming on next year.
If he plays at the same level as last year, it’s hard to see him bridging the gap to be a dominant ruckman by 2026/27

Heath isn’t far ahead of Marshall at the same age, he’s on an AFL list but Marshall was regularly putting together impressive VFL performances at the same age and just looked a footballer

Agree and I don’t think anyone is righting him off just yet just making the observation he is not as close to 1st football as some other observations out there and theres still quite a bit for him to work on if he wants to break into the 1’s. He’s only young so there is plenty of time for him, but as it stands if Ro went down I don’t think he would be ready to come in. In fact I think RTB might have him 2 or even 3 in line at present.

And 100% agree he is not a natural footballer like Ro. So it’s totally different comparison.

That board is a hoot.

I loved the training watcher who said Oliver was doing 145m run throughs in about 13 seconds.

Usain Bolt much?

Im a Heath fan but I agree with your assessment, he needs to keep improving to bridge the gap. The best AFL ruckman are aerobic beasts so Heath has a long way to go just to build an average tank. It will be a steep hill for him to climb. The other option is Keeler who also appears to struggle with the same aerobic isues which is a concern. Its one of the reasons I was surprised we didnt look at one of the quality young ruckman at this years draft.

We obviously had a good crack at De Koning last season so the club realise its a need. I guess they have got a plan to find another, be interesting to get some inside running on where that ruckman will come from - trade, draft?

Similar to what I said earlier in the thread, if Arie wants to be a slacker and not make his bed in the morning but then shows up on-field and gets 25 with 20 being 60m kicks onto the tit of Hill/Henry I'm happy.

We had an era of a few bad apples and we were a shot to win the flag about 4 times. We've also had an era of choirboys and we made the finals once during a big old * season so I know my preference.

If he goes off the rails the delist button is right there anyway

Great summary. I was there today and agree with all of that

I think we just need to be mindful that a lot of those ball movement drills lend themselves to a lot of our high possession BP, HB, Wing, High HF etc being set up to move the ball. I think all of those players have been impressive but it does make players like Stocker, Bonnar, Nas, Sinclair, Hill, Henry very prominent. In saying that they all look super fit and sharp with their execution and will all be in round 1 barring injury I believe. Sometimes the inside mids only really touch it at the clearances in those drills and don’t stand out as much. I really liked a few of the clearances from Dow today. He burst away from stoppage (something we don’t have a lot of), think Clark looks the fittest I have seen him & really focused and Steele looks like he’s shaken that niggle from last year and is back to his best.

I think our Midfield selection is going to be the most intriguing part of preseason up until round 1. From who’s in full training today it looked like Steele, Dow & Clark the core engine room with a bit time from Sinclair, Ross, Windhager, Owen’s, Wilson, Garcia etc, you then had Jones & Crouch in later stages of rehab and Pou in the Pool.

For me it’s how well we go in the midfield will define how far we can go this year along with a fit and functioning forward line.

Finally very impressed with our new boys. I think Wilson will probably start in the best 22, I think Hugo Garcia is going to surprise a few and maybe get a few early games if there are injuries, Collard does some things we have not seen in a saints jumper for a very long time, Gus Hastie again slight but very assured with ball in hand of HB and finally big Arie who really surprised me with his size he may have grown a couple of centimetres since his draft measurement.

Others really keen to see have an impact at Sandy and press a case this year - Hotton, Keelor, Heath & Van Es.

Any report on Angus McLENNAN?

The equation is pretty simple under the boss..work out & follow instructions or you’re out!

Bonner would need to improve his defence if he is to play half back, got exposed way too much at Port which is why he was moved onto the wing and then eventually dropped and delisted. Pure backup at this point, but has the potential to be B22
Sorry your comments are completely wrong. As a big fan and someone who was shattered when he was delisted by Port, Im pleased to see he has settled in at the Saints and training well, however Im not surprised. Used correctly Bonner is dangerous and damaging. Look at his 22 season and his defensive game on Isaac Heeney, outstanding. You dont play 94 games at a top 4 club by fluke. He also plays well in big games - finals and loves it at Marvel. You've got yourself a good one here and will play rnd 1 health permitting. Ross and Co didnt get him over to play VFL, I see Riley coming in and freeing up Sinclair which is scaring for other clubs. Anyway all the best for 24, I'll be keeping an eye on how you and Bonner go.

Any report on Angus McLENNAN?
Angus is a no fuss defender, I’d imagine a reliable lock down type, strong at the contest, one grab overhead mark & reasonable by hand and foot.
He, along with Hastie, O’Connell, Shoenmaker, Van Es will form a young but promising Sandy defensive unit, supported by the experienced Cordy and perhaps Paton!

Any report on Angus McLENNAN?

I really like him. He just goes about his business and doesn’t stand out in one particular area but does most things very well. Hoping he has a really solid injury free season at Sandy and he might put himself in the frame. Our backline is pretty well stocked except for the guy to play on the big beast so it’s going to be hard to break into. He’s a more a natural 1 on 1 defensive player than most of the mid size types we have. So he’s more of a Webster/Paton type that can play taller if required. Someone to play on the Toby Greene mid size forward types.

Great points…I’ve seen Bonner play live for Port and must say I was surprised to see him get delisted at age 26 at the time.
Perhaps Miles Bergman took his spot but his kicking can potentially help the quality of our forward 50 entries, not only with precision but also penetration.
I’ve been to training every week this preseason and he’s been in the top echelon each week…looks super fit with a point to prove!
Definitely a first 22 player at our club.

When will Caminiti join the main group?

Feels like he's been running laps for over two months.
Ask one of the staff on the sidelines on Friday as he was jogging by and got the “he’s not far away” id be surprised if he is not back by 1Feb

if he’s as good as you say he is then why was he delisted by Port?

Great to hear thanks.
In your opinion, why do you think Port let him go.

PS: All Port players love Marvel - can’t remember the last time we beat you there 🙄
