The season isn't over yet regardless of what happened today, we should still be a top 4 side by the end of it which was where I had us before the season, expectations were raised during the season is all.

We were stretched too thin tonight. Cerra is wasted in defence, but with Boyd out, Cincotta now a tagger, Williams now a forward and injured anyway, he's needed to plug a gap.

Kennedy was one of our best, but playing him forward means he's not there to contribute in the midfield.

Pitto was very disappointing. The 5 day break is irrelevant for someone who didn't play last week.

Kemp was repeatedly outmarked, but more than once he was simply done by a lack of height.

Elijah can hold his head up, his first half in particular was very good.

Doc and JSOS have been big outs all year. Imagine Doc running around on Ollie's wing, adding hardness and experience. JSOS adding grit to the forward line, delivering inside 50, taking some ruck time & freeing up Kennedy for other roles.

Things can change. I'm not writing the season off just yet. Even tonight our second quarter was pretty decent. But a disappointing game overall.

Pittonet lost the hitouts to Sweet. Sweet had 9 tackles, Pittonet 0. Sweet had 16 pressure acts, Pittonet 4.

That was an ideal matchup for Pittonet and he failed dismally. He is all we have for several weeks and he served that up.

Fortunately we’re still in touch with top 4. Next week Pies and then Hawks won’t be easy games, very hard physically affairs. Next week in particular Cameron and Cox will do damage, huge bodies and difficult to contain.
It gets easier after next 2 games, keep the fingers crossed.

It’s a massive 4 weeks. We need to win minimum 2 probably 3 to be top 4.

Key for me is injuries.

Get McKay TDK Acres Boyd Martin Williams back into side and playing well and we can beat anyone

I won’t go the semantics on the lack of difference between statement and opinion

No side is perfect, especially when injuries have taken their toll (as you say) and form is a off

I refuse to right us off in finals, especially given the food form we have shown this year

There is a world of difference. One is how I feel, the other is telling others how they should feel. I'm fine with people holding a different opinion.

There are reasons for where we are and I've acknowledged them. I'm just not seeing how we can turn it back around. We look exhausted.

The weight of the key outs were significant, but shouldn't be as prohibitive - particularly in a game where you've led for most of the night - as they were.

Coaching and structural (match committee) issues were more alarming to me than the strength of the list that was out there tonight.

I've been as critical of Pitto as any here. I thought he gave a fair account of himself in the first quarter and a half. As the tide turned he was absolutely non-existent and was heavily outplayed.

Symptomatic of the team or just himself?

Terrible performance with some clear issues emerging towards the pointy end of the season.
  • Pittonett had a solid first half but unfortunately is a very limited and one dimensional player. As soon as he starts losing hitouts (as all rucks do during patches of a game) he offers nothing around the ground. Complete passenger. We need to build our team around TdK as the primary ruck.
  • our midfield is also one dimensional. All about contested possessions with no speed, or quality in terms of distribution (Walsh is a particular culprit, E. Hollands an exception). Their i50s are predictable and easy to cut off, especially when they double team Charlie. People keep talking about Ollie's run as being a reason for his selection, but surely we can no longer overlook his glaring deficiencies: weak in the tackle and recently poor with his distribution.
  • Owies and Motlop together leave our forward line a bit too small. i think one should be replaced with Jack Martin or Williams.
  • Kemp had a decent game but still doesn't look like the right match up for a big forward. Unfortunately seems to be no solution for this problem

If all of those players are back and fit and firing at finals time then we are a very different team to the one which played tonight. We just need to hang on to a top 4 spot until then, which we are still capable of doing.

Cuningham
Marchbank
Martin
Williams
McGovern

Out of a possible 95 games they could have played season to date.
Have played 39 combined.
That includes Cuninghams “game” tonight.

Williams & McGovern account for 30 of those. The other 3 have combined for a total of 9

Add to that the back-up KPD Durdin playing 2 games in three years…..

That’s a hell of a lot of list spots to carry that simply don’t get on the park.

All of Martin, Cuningham, Marchbank & Durdin need to be exited at the end of the year.
Such poor list management to be still carrying all of those six after their respective injury histories.

Yep, we will be lucky to make finals with the way we are going.

I think most of us penciled us top 4. The issue is our current form going into the finals. Compare this form vs last year around this time, it is Day and Night. They got 4 weeks to fix it.

At half time I was content.
At full time I was sad.
And now I’m just frustrated and disappointed.
They ramped up their intensity and pressure in the 2nd half. 91 tackles and 17 of those i50 are big numbers. They saw our intensity rise in the 2nd and basically came out after us.
Doesn’t help with how we couldn’t buy a trick in midfield in the 2nd half, or the way we moved the ball pretty much all game apart from Q2. Or that Voss and co. moved magnets around for no bloody need.

Season is not over. But we need to buck our ideas up quick smart if we are serious about making serious inroads in September. Just pure frustration at this point.

I'm not looking for excuses but trying to look for a theory behind the slump.

About a month ago the flu/illness bug hit * really hard. It was a pretty big story at the time.

Any chance that Ben or someone may have given it to Harry / another Carlton player and the same bug has gone through our team as well?

Cerra at HB instead of playing Boyd seems wrong if he not a mid changing half fwd don't play him ( we worked this out last year playing inside mids on the half back line doesn't work for us - this is really irritating me that they do what we know doesn't work) - not playing forgarty hollands and Kennedy in midfield rotation was bad when our clearance game was so poor .

Walsh needs to be a handball first player or play on the wing where he has more time for disposal he is doing to much and just giving it the heave ho..
Fremantle Brisbane midfield will spank us at this rate --

For the life of me we have had three years to replace jones it is a gapping hole in our defence ..

we have had a lot of games where we have gone long periods without scoring or generating inside 50's over the course of the year it is a pattern I don't see changing.

surely we at least finish 4th if we drop out of the top 4 and can't impact finals will likely impact this team next year maybe even see a regression .
