Over to the Game Day thread …

No flame. But whoever Young plays on (Hawks/Cameron) they will kick a bag on him. I would send Weitering to Cameron because he is more of the inform forward from Geelong. I don't know if Young has the legs to keep up with Camereon running down the wings.

Stewart is their barometer, when he misses you'll generally see Geelong not play up to their usual level.

This game will rely on Weiters finding strong form as he's been off the last few weeks and we need him to curtail Hawkins. Our one problem is covering for Cameron. Put a plug on Holmes (Hewett) as he's their mid key and play as we did in the second half last week I predict we can give them a good 6-8 goal loss.

This could be the game that signals our bone fide credentials and a win would be a huge confidence shot to the team morale.

If Williams doesn't get up then Cincotta can come in. Otherwise no changes to the 23, maybe swap Carroll to start and Fantasia to sub.

Hopefully next week we start getting some of the injured crew back with Cerra, McGovern etc.

I think the coaches would want Moir to have a solid block of games before throwing him into the ones.

I just caught Cripps reply..

I assume the question was something like 'With all the injuries, how do you expect to beat Geelong this week?'

Cripps [para] ... during our winning streak last season ... we had a lot of injuries.

Yep - Awesome.

It's great having some depth to replace our regulars ... and still able to win the big games

Edit: Not convinced on Young. Looking at his stats v GWS ... hardly touched the ball with 100% game time.
AF rating - 16 where 60 is just an ok game

Young only really lost the very last contest of the game where the tumbling kick dropped short and Riccardi out marked him. Otherwise did what we needed him to. We aren't playing fantasy football

Edit rewatched the replay it was the second last goal

In our favour:
  • Stewart is their number 2 most important player (behind Cameron)
  • They are undefeated. We are the kings of inflicting first losses for opposition this year
  • The Gabba was waterlogged on Saturday night. There were 158 tackles laid. Sore/tired.
  • Weitering has a good record on Hawkins
  • Our ruck duo are going to monster Geelong
  • Blicavs might have to play down back
  • We are back at the MCG
  • There will be more Carlton than Geelong fans

Couldn't care if Young gets 0 touches this week. If he can keep Cameron to 1 or 2 goals he has done his job.

They won a premiership with their setup at the G plus they can always throw Blicavs back. While they may lack in height it gives them an advantage when the ball hits the ground and they can rebound
Our lads had better hold their marks then.

An advantage can also be a disadvantage depending on perspective!

After edging a luckless Saints at KP, this is their form line - not really a lot to write home about... noting the Lions lost Big O early in Q2 and the game was played in abysmal conditions.

I simply don't see it with them.

Watching the Cats play this season, the further Cameron goes up the ground, the less impactful he is. The spot on the ground where he impacts the game the most is, comfortably, inside 50. He doesn't do many things that are spectacular or game changing when he's 150 metres from goal. I would be letting him roam wherever he wants, but the second he's within 55-60 metres of goal, he gets matched up by whoever is closest, and eventually switch over to Young or Kemp. The Hawkins matchup shouldn't give us too much trouble, as Weiters does the job well every time we play them. Will be interesting to see how we deal with Cameron

Kicked 2 early (one very good) but then was basically unsighted until the last quarter. Not knocking him it just wasn't a banging the door down game
We have a few in the 1s who keep getting picked despite very mediocre performances over several weeks.

The lad would provide another tall target and he converts from limited opportunities.

Going missing when you're a forward is inevitably a function of your midfield going missing...

that won't be us on a fine day at the G.

The difference is the role they play. It's easy to look at the stats and say someone was poor. I saw Moir kick 2 goals, then basically look exhausted for 3 and half quarters. You're telling me he would be able to chase and harrass all day in our forward line? I have no doubt he'll be an excellent player, but let him develop

Look, I agree that he has time on his side and his second efforts leave a lot to be desired...

BUT, the kid has something... I'd like to see it on the big stage at the G.

If he switched with OF, is there any chance of a significant net 'loss'?

Yes, because they aren't the same type of player. At least Orazio adds pressure to an extent. Moir would make us too top heavy, especially if TDK gets big minutes forward again. He might have something, but I guarantee he would be slated when he didn't chase, or do nothing for 3 quarters. Let him develop, and play when he's ready, not when the fans are ready

Conway, their #1 ruck, is 206cm, BUT is a 20yo with three career games under his belt.

Surely that is something our rucks can use to advantage?
They’ll bring Stanley back - look to break even at stoppage and score from turnovers and D50 chains

of course they're not the same sort of player!

(seriously)

What is a pressure act - waving your arms around wildly within 10m of a guy with the pill?

Why the rush? We are well past the stage of having to throw kids to the wolves. We have to start thinking like finalists, not as a development team for kids who aren't ready. At this stage I'll take OF over him.
