1933
South Melbourne's premiership side (defeating Richmond) was often referred to as the "foreign legion" due to the high number of players (10!) in the team who had been recruited from interstate.
1933 Argus.jpg
"When I visited the South training room last week with Artist Dick Ovenden, the room presented somewhat the appearance of a footballers' interstate convention. No less than ten interstate men were there (and all of them regular members of the team)—Harris and Bertram (South Australia), Davies and Laurie Nash (Tasmania), Wade (South Australia), and the Western Australian quintette, Diggins, Faul., O'Meara, Beard, and Bowe."

Happy Swans debut for Brody and James.

Rampe isn’t a member of any Foreign Legion. He might have played a season down in Melbourne before he was drafted but was playing in the SFL immediately before his drafting. He was born and raised in Clovelly.
Thanks for the correction Liz.

Going to be a fascinating start to the season. All eyes on Swans and Demons.

I predict swans to get up because they want it more. It’s our big marquee game and Grundy and JJ to prove a point. Both to play blinders and be the difference in the fourth (and JJ to show that he was always supposed to be an inside mid first, and wingman second).

Chad and Rowbottom to step up. Errol and McDonald to have quieter games with small moments. Other players in front half to get us over the line. It will be scrappy, not beautiful - save for a couple of big clean marks and conversion by McLean.

Melican to free up Rampe and Blakey in defence, creating both robustness and dynamism for our back six.

Gawn to graciously accept that he was beaten on the day.

Pie fans to whine that they are subsiding Swans success.

Phil Davis on SEN now a good listen about our forward structure without you know who

Magnificent.

I'm backing us to win tonight via our intercepting and rebounding out of defence, as long as we don't get absolutely smashed at contest. I just hope we don't aimlessly bomb it in to F50 as May and Lever will just destroy us. Lower the eyes and find players on the lead. I'd be inclined to look more for Hayward, Papley and Heeney (when forward) then the taller forwards, especially if they can't get separation from their opponents.
