Despite my Stoopid Age, I am more nervous about this opening game to the season than any I can remember. (Hmmn, no jokes thanx).

Our team is not what Id want but I recognise heaps of folks are happy and I really hope you are all right.

I really hope I am not right.

Take three players out who basically play the same position is going to create a hole in any team sheet.

I'm backing us to win tonight via our intercepting and rebounding out of defence, as long as we don't get absolutely smashed at contest. I just hope we don't aimlessly bomb it in to F50 as May and Lever will just destroy us. Lower the eyes and find players on the lead. I'd be inclined to look more for Hayward, Papley and Heeney (when forward) then the taller forwards, especially if they can't get separation from their opponents.
That is a good point. I actually think that if Lever is getting a lot of intercepts then we will lose because it would mean that our forward entries and leading patterns are completely dysfunctional.

I am hopeful without Parker bombing it forward 30 times that we won't give it to Lever every second ball though. Consise ball entries are so important, use Errol and JMac among others kicking it into 50 rather than Hail Mary kick it as high and fast as you can like a few of our mids do.

With regards to the selection of Melican, I think the motivation behind this is to free up Rampe to take Trac when he shifts forward and also allows Blakey to continue in a rebounding role. There's no natural match up for Trac amongst our mids for when he moves in front of goals and amongst our defenders, Rampe is the best on a guy like Petracca.

Rampe has been a servant but we need to not be playing him as a key pillar post late in his career, I did though think Hamling would have been playing but happy enough to give Melican a go he has my support (that is until he stands 5m off his opponent every time)

It all starts with the chain out of defence. We were sloppy with our handballs and short kicks in the middle against bris (albeit in sloppy conditions but it didn't seem to faze bris). Need to be clean before worrying about that last kick. Hopefully they come hand in hand. I'd be quite bemused if we consistently dump kick to lever and May tonight, it's literally the only and most obvious rule you don't break v the dees. If we start dump kicking then it'll be a sign the players feel that they are losing a hold on the game, which might come to fruition if we get steam rolled in contested possies.

It annoys me more against Melbourne too, literally the big bald bloke who you can't miss just stands in defence as an extra half the time too. If he's there, use your common sense there's an extra somewhere, spread the ball, short 30m kicks and work your way forward.

South Melbourne's premiership side (defeating Richmond) was often referred to as the "foreign legion" due to the high number of players (10!) in the team who had been recruited from interstate.
"When I visited the South training room last week with Artist Dick Ovenden, the room presented somewhat the appearance of a footballers' interstate convention. No less than ten interstate men were there (and all of them regular members of the team)—Harris and Bertram (South Australia), Davies and Laurie Nash (Tasmania), Wade (South Australia), and the Western Australian quintette, Diggins, Faul., O'Meara, Beard, and Bowe."

Since 2017 there have been only two games played at the SCG.

No doubt Melbourne will struggle on our small ground :p

Happy Swans debut for Brody and James.

Onwards and upwards

The Mighty Bloods to win by a Max and Tom Papley 11 points
Wow. I'm going to struggle to come up with anything near worthy next week after this incredible season opener. Talk about setting the bar high. My options are to risk losing my nuts trying to clear the bar or cut some moves and limbo under it. Methinks the latter....

Go you Swannies

I expect those who were dodging snakes in a sauna last week will have tired legs. It's a good thing we held a few players back but it will still be a measure of our ability to run out games this year. I would expect match fitness to have been a priority over the pre-season.

Few things would make me happier than to see our team lift in the final quarter and come home strongly with a wet sail to take the win.

Win: Onya Horse

Lose: Horse omitting Gus cost us the game!!!! No more favourites!!!! Sack Horse!!!

i'm locking myself into sack horse in advance then so as not be accused of hypocrisy:p

My New Year’s Swans resolutions are:
1. To not melt in the first 5 min of the game when it becomes clear we have failed to turn up.
2. To not notice the free kick count even when it inevitably goes south.
3. And the most important, to resist commenting on the game day thread when resolution 1 and 2 fail.

I am not confident in fulfilling any of them.
