Do we really care what ROB is on salary wise, nobody knows other than ROB, his agent and our list manager and none of them have said so time to move on.

All I know is if Sam Draper is coming he'll be on a fair bit more I'd think so unless he improves markedly personally I don't see the value in pursuing him.
Yeah, I agree with that.

Draper turned down pretty big offers from St Kilda in the past, so he's probably only leaving if it makes financial sense.

Will Essendon try hard to keep him?

One thing we agree on, seems developing our own rucks should have been the way to go.

If we pay him big money to come, what’s your thoughts? I just want to take a photo of your opinion now for a before and after shot.

In 2021, when ROB signed after 30-odd games, the average salary was $372, 224.

Coming off the rookie list and still on that contract, he would have been earning $200k. A $600k offer would be triple what he was earning.

He's only ever been reported as earning between $575k and $675k.

Look, you might be right, but I can see why the offer would have been $600k and why ROV would have accepted. Again, we'll never know - sadly.

One of the few upsides of bringing in Draper if ROB leaves, is that it buys us time to develop our own ruck.

But it will be interesting to see if that’s what we do with that opportunity.
If we bring in Draper no chance are we developing our own ruck, they’ll see that as proof we don’t need to, no matter we’ve over paid for an average ruck.

Maybe.

We'd only bring him in if ROB is leaving, and Strachan will be gone too. They'll bring a developing ruck by default.

I'd be concerned Adelaide wouldn't drop Draper if he was stinking it up. They'd think it's wrong to spend that sort of money on a SANFL ruck and double down to try and save face.

In that case it wouldn’t be a developing ruck, it would be a mediocre back up ruck who was ready to play if required.
our best bet from here if we wanted (debatable) genuine ruck depth is to draft a mediocre back up like Strauchan plus a development ruck. The plan being as the development ruck matures and is physically capable of being called upon, they replace the mediocre back up (providing back up and progressive pressure on the 1st ruck, like ROB was to Sauce) then replace that gy with another develpment ruck. Then youve always got a depveloping but near ready player behind the 1st ruck plus a development.

THe ideal cycle but easier said than done as that developing player just needs to not work out and your cycle is hot

I’ve just developed a head ache 😉

ROB is getting on, so we’ve left developing a ruck from scratch too late. The ideal strategy would be getting ONE ruck that simultaneously serves as short term competition/coverage for ROB and a long term replacement. Someone like Heath or Smith.

Again, that's a big assumption
What’s your definition of a developing ruck? Mine is someone young whose is developing until they are mature enough to play seniors. Ideally someone who ends up quality otherwise you replace them.

Do you think we’d play a young ruck as lead ruck in the SANFL and risk they’d have to lead our ruck in the AFL?

Has that been our style?

We've brought in a young ruck from Centrals as a development player, so there's one. Bloke from Sydney isn't exactly at the top of his development curve either.

Then there's the Toby Murray option.

I'm as critical as anyone of our lack of a young ruck, but we've now got 2 and maybe 3 in our SANFL setup.

We’ve drafted a young ruck from Centrals?

He and the Sydney bloke are SANFL listed players. The Sydney bloke was delisted and ignored by all clubs and destined for Norwood. He is a panic selection for our SANFL side.

Banking on any of those to be an AFL quality ruck is a stretch.

As for Murray, if they saw him as a ruck option, you reckon we would have brought in the other 2? Our whole strategy goes from 2 rucks on the list to 5? Nah.
