ANB is extremely highly regarded in clubland, and would instantly be in our top 15 players.

Not only that, he addresses a position of genuine need at half forward, where we have tried and failed with Murphy and McHenry.

It frees both of Rankine and Rachele up for more midfield time, and replaces Murphy in the 22.

Would absolutely trade for him.

Perhaps an “out: Berry plus future 3rd, in: ANB” type 3 way trade might work (with the Pies taking Berry and sending something to Melbourne).

I distinctly remember us being linked to ANB in a past year (maybe the 2022 offseason) by a reliable poster too. Clearly been tracking him for a long time.

Genuinely good half forwards are few and far between. Not concerned about the age at all - we have a young list, need experienced players who are actually good and he’s got 4-5 years left in him. Go and get him.

Pies have the Hawks 2nd, that would work

I like Smillie but he’s probably bottom of the top group of mids I want us to draft. Bit slow and still very much a raw player. Between Dowling, Cheddar, Curtin and Dawson we don’t need more height. We need an out and out midfielder, preferably with a bit of pace.
Surely our recruiters are after a midfielder with speed/burst from stoppage. It’s a glaring weakness.

I think we as a board undervalue what Houston would bring back in a trade, tbh. Especially in contract

The in contract part means a bit less if Port are pushing him out. We saw what happened with Ladhams - talk of a first round pick and they basically moved forward 4 spots from memory - and might have given something back to do so
Houston is an excellent half back - but how many players go for more than a top 10 pick?

Very consistent player. Not a gun or flashy, but very handy & neat.

If it meant replacing Murphy, it's a no brainer.

Only his age lessens his value a little.
Lol replacing murphy..bwahaha..no one is replacing mr irreplacable, why do people bother with that. He is teflon murphy and they will shift players around to accommodate him

Like I said in the post above Smillie hasn't really over impressed me all that much this year.

Certainly underwhelming for a player originally thought of as a lock for pick 1.

For me if it’s not Draper I would like FOS - then either of Lalor or Langford

Swap FOS with Draper and I agree. Also happy with Reid, Smith and Smillie probably the ones least suited to our needs.

Nick Haynes, unsurprisingly, is looking for a trade to Carlton. What is really surprising is that he's been on a salary of more than 1m for the last several years! As I said elsewhere, these long contracts are really good, aren't they? ;)

Speaking of Carlton, someone on their board has said they’ve met with Berry

Melbourne radio reporting ANB wants to be traded to the Crows. I mean take it with a grain of salt but seems like we might get at least one Melbourne player. Might not be the Melbourne player people might have wanted or expected but he might be the one we get. Could free up Rankine and Rachele for more midfield time too
a straight swap for berry

With Edwards coming through and potentially demanding games as soon as round 1 next year, Berry is likely to be surplus. He is a good player but trading him for a second rounder could be more beneficial for us. Will they take McHenry and Murphy with him. Id offer them free. By Berry with a second hander get 2 extra free.

Who would do our tackling? Do you want Laird back in the middle?

In all seriousness, this is exactly right

There is no way we'd recruit a player into Murphy's role.

Alex Neal-Bullen is less likely to be on our list next year than any player in the entire league.

29 to start next year with (currently) 174 games played, so he's in the experienced demographic they want to beef the team up in.

But the point is if we plan on drafting a mid or mids, we need to start pumping games into them. We need spots. Losing Berry isnt ideal but spots are limited. Edwards looks like he is ready for games. Dowling needs more time in the middle.

Does sound like he is looking at moving back to Melbourne.
We're at least playing him to finish out the 2nd half of the year so we can claim he's a best 22 player and make another team pay up for him.

Maybe learnt their lessons from Lyons and Greenwood, don't treat 'em like discards on the way out and then act surprised when a team won't pay up big for them.

IMHO I think he is easily best 22 and I will be disappointed if he leaves.
