The Age's take.

6. North Melbourne

In: Caleb Daniel (Western Bulldogs/trade), Jack Darling (West Coast/trade), Jacob Konstanty (Sydney/trade), Luke Parker (Sydney/trade)
Out: Picks 25, 44 and 67
Draft picks: 2, 62
Trade grade: B+

It’s tough being North Melbourne in this era, as they fill the club with young talent but struggle to get in the frame for elite talent. However, this was a good trade period for them despite Dan Houston making it clear he did not want to join the Roos, who remained somewhat in the hunt until Monday afternoon. They convinced West Coast premiership forward Jack Darling to come for pick 67 to support Nick Larkey, and Sydney champion Luke Parker for much-needed leadership, although they had to release pick 44 to the Swans, who always play hard. Scoring small forward Jacob Konstanty in the Parker deal was shrewd business, given he was a No.20 pick two years ago. Handing over pick 25 for Caleb Daniel may seem a tad rich, but they wanted experience and went out and got it. Keep a watch on North Melbourne’s pick two, which they may try to split into multiple assets.

I kind of wish we would. Finish off our midfield with a Draper or FOS type while we have access to the real cream of the crop (it won’t last).

Although I guess if 6 gets us a high rated tall then a pick around 11 is still good (Smillie around this realm, not sure we go a small forward now). Can always trade in an F2 if one of those other talls drift a little (M Whitlock etc).
We are also getting River Stevens, so I don't think we will get another small forward. I suspect a kpf/tall utility and maybe a tall/defensive mid type.

Or go for a few talls in one hit. i.e. Tauru and Matt Whitlock.

I don’t see stevens getting drafted by anyone, he’s average and it’s a stronger draft

Which will mean he will be fs eligible again next year so we can decide then if we feel like using a rookie spot after assessing a full vfl year

The "We could have got Konstanty for free" narrative is short sighted. He's a 20 year old first round draft pick small forward.
If he's delisted there's a dozen clubs that would roll the dice.

We now have two small forwards who haven't got their chance at senior footy. Both of them staring down the gun of never playing an AFL game despite being on a list. Payne was made to earn his spot which he hasn't done yet, and now there's another kid who spent 2 years in Sydney's system trying to get picked before him.

I think they both go in to 2025 hungry and desperate to get a game and that's good business for us.

The median pick in the 21-30 range plays 35 games for the club that drafted them, gets awarded two coaches votes and no Brownlow votes.

Using this range is also generous, as our pick will end up a lot closer to 30 than 20. It's also worth noting that most of these games would be for below average value from young developing kids.

Based on this data, a pass mark for Daniel would be two quality seasons, which is an above average return on pick 25.
Get out of here with your common sense.

The Stevens one is interesting.

Given our list spot situation, he'd have to be drafted in the place of one of Drury, Harvey and Laz.

Even if we split 2 for 6 and something, and then only draft Stevens after those two, that means just one of the three above keeps their position.

Yep and I’m taking cooper on the rookie list over him

Herald Sun's take on our trades.

IN: Jack Darling (West Coast), Caleb Daniel (Western Bulldogs), Luke Parker (Sydney), Jacob Konstanty (Sydney)
OUT: Nil
2024 PICKS: 2, 62
2025 PICKS: No change
Brady Rawlings started the trade period wanting four players and he got four players, just not the best one he wanted. Dan Houston is missing from North Melbourne’s plans, with Jacob Konstanty thrown in late. The Roos didn’t want to dip too far into their draft hand – they put a full hand in like a kid reaching into a showbag. Now they surely have to split pick two and gain a better footprint. How does Jack Darling help? Luke Parker has been brought in for experience, Caleb Daniel couldn’t make it work this year at the Dogs and Konstanty was about to be cut. It may be harsh but these moves on their own don’t make the Roos much better and now they don’t have much draft capital left.
RATING: 3.5/10
This smacks of:
Write the rating before trade period and make the paragraph fit the rating after the trade period.

Plus it uses up a pick that we might want for someone else in the delisted pool. Absolute free hit in an area of need.

We traded for experience (age) and finals, strength and fitness influence, leadership etc

And we got it. Yeah sure we paid 25 for Caleb but we are ****ing shit and don’t have the luxury of giving up whatever we want, as we are not a attractive club whatsoever

We have gone to the draft for so long now, time to take some risks. They will make a huge difference on and off field even if their stats are shit. The urgency is telling us and the players we are sick of it, the time is now. As we will only have these players for 2-3 years max, so take advantage boys! 💙

No room in the midfield now with Parker coming in.

I'd prefer to start next trade period with one of those picks that everybody goes gaga for.

I'd prefer to have won enough games that pick makes a disappointing death ride complete for the Tigers and still get the player at the top of our board.

We'll go closer to the day knowing if we've committed to Stevens.

I do like those two talls. I think Melbourne remains a real sticking point for Tauru at 5 though.

I would delist Drury, Harvey & Lazzaro. We know what they are like. No more to be seen or hope to improve. Next

I have some reservations on our overall strategy given it feels like it has zig zagged.

That in 2023 we were taking one approach and now in 2024 we are taking a different one.

it makes me nervous that there is no decided approach on how we actually get ourselves out of where we are.

Some of what we are doing I kind of get but at the same time it also feels like the coaches view our side a bit like an under 8s side that require coaches on the ground to be able to tell each of the players where they need to go and where they need to run.

If we are going this path, no half measures. There can be no tolerating of bad games by senior players. Single captain and that player needs to be able to put football on the park that makes themselves un-droppable.

Sheez would be my preference but he's a kid and as other posters have pointed out probably needs another year or two without that burden. I would probably give it to X.

It wouldn't surprise me if he sat back after the year and couldn't believe how poor the team performed and lack of direction on field. I feel the list is actually in a decent spot and it was the leadership, skill execution and also game plan that were the biggest issue.

He expected more of our leaders and they failed.

It’s 💯 not a junk pick. Really good pick. But hey we took the risk.

When or if we get better we won’t have to be giving away our picks like that, we’d have more players wanting to come

Caleb didn’t even nominate us
Of course he did, North targeted him, he said he wanted to go to North, and his manager and North and Western were working on it through the trade period. It doesn’t need to be a media announcement.

Might go early with Matt Whitlock in that instance.
