Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

I’m sure I read in an article somewhere recently that Walls or whoever was saying we wouldn’t be looking at Bo Allen as we already have too many players of his type.
Walls.

Does anyone have the quote from Swans recruiter who said only important test at combine was the 2km trial.

Me too. I think Berry is a nice player, but I prefer the way Hannaford plays. He has more aggro and power. However, the big question mark is Hannaford had a very poor 2km time trial result. If Hannaford is viewed as having poor endurance, it could stop him rising up the board.

Take him at 30

I've learned about my optimism and my way to find the light in bad situations. I hadn't really faced much adversity in my footy and I struggled with it early, but I managed to find my light and pushed my attention to how I could make it a good thing," he said. It was Paul Roos. On the abc daily podcast during trade week.
He was very clear the only measure in the combine that correlated with a successful future AFL career was 2km time trial (or 3km back in the day). Basically dismissed all other measures as a bit of a fad actually. Reckoned the in person interviews at the combine are the most important part of it by far for recruiters.

I’m shocked by hannafords 7:26 time over 2km.
That is alarmingly poor for a 18 year old trying to make it as a professional AFL footballer. Thats a pace of 3:43 m/km over just two km. he must have been hampered somehow?
The difference between 6:26 and 7:26 over 2km might not sound much but anyone that’s dabbled in athletics will well you it’s an indicator of an enormous gap in athletic ability.

I would have thought a small forward especially would be doing 6:30 at least over 2km. Only guys that might get a pass for slowish time would be rucks or big bodied KPP.

If you can’t run you are not much use at AFL level.

No.1 fancy's 'slow' 2km run unlikely to faze recruiters - https://www.afl.com.au/news/147650

Rayner did a similar time.
That actually highlights how bad it was

Rayner was 3 months off footy and overcoming a knee injury to test

Brayshaw in comparison did 6:14

Darcy Fogarty did 7:33, only 7 seconds slower than Hannaford
CCJ 7:35
Both of them are slow AF

Wasn’t there rumours about Rayner tanking the combine to get drafted by a Victorian club at the time?

Personally I think that’s BS but if people were saying that it shows he was way worse than they thought he should’ve been.

The time trial is a measure of mental toughness and sacrifice. You can't fall off the couch and run a sub 6 min 2km. It's the result of hard work over a long time and focused mental energy at the event.

It's arguably the character test.

I don't want to just disagree with you and I get what you are tryimg to say but it doesn't take that much mental toughness.

When I was at that age and older I'd run 2 3 or even 5 ks flat out. Sometimes off my couch Sometimes after sitting on my back side at uni all day and I played ammo footy.

It's just 2ks

A poor 2ks after an entire season either screams x player is running with an injury which they shouldn't or is either unfit or not trying their hardest. On Berry I can't see how a lad who has had such a big season would be that unfit and it wouldn't be he's not mentally up for it.

Berry? We’re discussing Hannaford’s poor 2km run aren’t we?

I think he is talking about his Yoyo result.

Something doesn't make sense, and Hannaford's Yoyo results look ok.

I am guessing some of draft combine results we have are incorrect.

FYI - Berry did not test at the combine.

Joe Berry
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: Murray Bushrangers
Community Club: Wangaratta
Date of Birth: 18/04/2006
Height: 181cm

A crafty left-footed small forward who has proved to be one of the most dangerous players of his type in this year’s Draft pool. Presents on the lead with real speed, works hard up the ground to win the ball, has elite one-touch hands at ground level and innate goal sense. Booted an equal-high nine goals during the National Championships and averaged 13.2 disposals and three tackles to win All Australian honours. Was also star for the Murray Bushrangers during the Coates Talent League season, averaging 14 disposals and kicking 27 goals, which included four bags of four. Was a joint winner of the Bushrangers’ best and fairest award and was selected in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year. Did not test at Combine due to illness.

It's arguably the character test.
It’s a measure of athletic ability, and a good time is an indicator of aerobic capacity and natural stamina and endurance. Character has nothing to do with it, no amount of character can compensate for a lack of natural athletic capacity.
If you can’t cover 2km at a decent pace how are you going to play 120 min of midfield minutes at AFL level? Or even a pressure small forward role.

There’s a reason Cam Rayner can’t play full time mid still, 7 years into his career.

Darcy Fogarty - another old school stay at home full forward that doesn’t do much running.
Will Brodie - another example.

I’m not so sure clubs are interested in a small forward with poor aerobic capacity anymore

It is a character test, as most people with strong character put in the work during the year to get fit.

Either way, I don't expect Hannaford to play much AFL next year. Maybe a couple games as sub. I also expect him to slide in the draft.
