I'm prepared to give him a chance.
ONE.
And provided he costs next to nothing.
But one only. The first bit of trouble and he's out on his ear. Put it in his contract.
He has been a recidivist, but not at our club.
We have good people to put around him now and try and pull him into line.
I think this is about where it should stand. Whatever happens his easy ride is over and he'd be going from megabucks to a rookie contract with behavioral clauses. He'll have to eat a lot of humble pie and learn to like it, or he'll be playing bush league for the rest of his days.
If it costs us nothing then 1 chance is ok.

I could live with giving TT one chance. What’s the worst that could happen, we delist him? That Lovett situation couldn’t have gone any worse yet we still went on to play in the GF in the same year so it’s not like these things totally derail a club.

the talent does not outweigh all the baggage that comes with TT.

Good player on his day, but no superstar.

And clearly has no massive desire to make it at the afl level.

He’s had plenty of chances to be honest, this wouldn’t be his second chance. It’d be about his 5th.

He’s been an absolute burden on nmfc the past two years to get little in return. They couldn’t wait to see the back of him

Don’t need him, don’t want him - there are other bargain players to be found, everyone talking about second chances like North didn’t already give him a handful.

This isn’t a Tyson Stengle type situation. Move on. We can do better!

Spot on. No way we even think about recruiting this guy.

I'm of the mind that this will be Dougal's last year as a Saint if Cordy holds ok.
Probably still worth a second round pick to a club in need.

RTB suggested we are going to the draft this year so putting another full back on the wish list other than an 18yo at the draft, is not looking likely.

Dougal is not an elite defender by any means, but he is still a fair way ahead of Cordy IMO. Elite full backs are not falling from the trees, so to find a better replacement would cost $$$ and possibly trade. Moving Dougal on without a better replacement would be the wrong move IMO.

Based on last years games, more of a priority should be to find another ruckman/tall forward who can fill the 2nd ruck role. Owens or Hayes will fill that position this season and I guess a lot will depend on how that goes. Heath & Keeler are options but still seem a fair way from making it. Looking for another ruckman to fill the position if we lose Marshall to injury has to come into our plans, as Campbell is a stop gap only.

I'd imagine we'll at least try to lure Sam Taylor over this year as a free agent. Very unlikely but you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. He'd almost complete our setup for the next 8-10 years.

If we don't get him, I'm still happy to back Dougal in. The issue with him is decision-making which I believe can be trained if you do it the right way. He has the athleticism and the experience so if he can stop being an on-field idiot then he'll be fine and will be capable of being a premiership full back. More so than Cordy. Imagine if we could combine Zlugger's cool head with Doug's attributes!

We MUST keep a first rounder for this year, its a super draft of midfielders so you could say its literally the perfect draft for the Saints. We're almost guaranteed another really talented mid and I'd love to draft Christian Moraes - speedy classy 182cm mid. Would fit perfectly alongside Pou, Windy, Owens in the middle and give us the perfect balance for the next decade

Taylor is a free agent 2025 but yes we should give him what he wants to join us

With all our young talls l wouldn't think they'd be targeting one in the draft except they have already said they want another ruckman. There's a fair bit riding on Van Ess' year in that regard. But if we're ok without Doogs then he becomes expendable.

Thats your opinion Scrappy - mine is the opposite but thats fine. Van Es has shown very little at this point and even if he does make it, he is some time away from filling the AFL full back position. It is likely we will pick up Cole tall defender as an NGA, but dont be surprised if we look at another versatile key tall at the draft. Who knows Keeler might become a gun defender, but I think the move in defence for him is more about developing his game than a list need move.

That's kind of my point. If we end up wanting another KPD l can't see them wanting another development project unless Van Ess is a washout. We already have Ari and will possibly get Cole.

Agreed but where does the ready made full back (better than Howard) come from? Cordy is not a long term answer...
That's why l think there's a lot riding on Van Ess this year. If he goes well and Cordy proves serviceable then it might open the opportunity to get something for Doogs. I tend to think he's not highly regarded, but he certainly has some value.
We don't have much to trade with this year so it could become an option.

We are a like a married couple :thumbsupv1: - thats why I believe we cant afford to lose Howard. We dont have a garuanteed replacement the same as Marshall. Finding them will be where our development coaches and recruiters will earn their keep.

We won't get Cole.
