I just do not see what some our seeing in Soldo. I would much prefera younger guy who may bloom into decent ruck, rather go for just another less than GOP Ruck who will not get better.

If the club did get him, it better be for bugga all.

Sorry to break it to you mate, but that group is not taking us to a flag.

I reckon we are closer than you think. It’s the best the list has looked since Lyon left IMO. Heaps of youth who should surge too.

No problems with that assessment so now suggest one that’s available & is 23-24 years old, we have Heath in the 2s & we seem to be bypassing him.

A decent second ruck. Thats what he has spent his career being.

Would be pretty happy if he can gives us a 2019 style season backing up Ro like he did Nank

oh, I agree it's the best the list has looked since 2011.

Mostly due to the youth we have coming through, which is why I think we need to keep adding to it.

We have some good older players but those guys have got us nowhere other than just scraping into finals and aren't going to be the nucleus to our next flag.

Please keep Battle's compo for the draft; Houston is the not the missing piece of our puzzle. I want us to use those 3 top 25 picks on this draft, we won't regret it - we brought Dalrymple in for a reason.
Don't know
x 3 AA
Houston x 2 AA
Soldo backup ruck
7 and 8 ( hopefully)
24
Peckett
Cole
The other NGA who I can never remember.
Maybe a PSD
Maybe a mid season.

Fair haul.

Rookie lists increase by an extra spot next season don’t they?
Forgot about extra rookies and the Sandy selection.

So we can have 6 rookies + 3 Cat B rookies.

Current Rookies:
1. Hayes
2. Hall
3. Heath
4. Caminiti
5. (Vacant)
6. (Vacant)

Current Cat B:
1. McLennan
2. O'Connell
3. (Vacant)

Primary List probable vacancies:
1. Crouch (5)
2. Ross (6)
3. Battle (26)
4. Membrey (28)
5. Alison (30)
6. Van Es (31)
7. Paton (33)
8. Bonner (36)
9. Campbell (38)
10. Hotton (39)

Other vacant numbers
37
46

Soldo is a shrewd move for us I reckon.

Not sure he will play every game, but I can see us trying him in tandem with Ro, and god forbid if Ro got injured… he could be the number 1 ruck.

Moose will get to be the number 1 ruck at Sandy to press his case throughout the year.

Good sides need depth, Macrae and Soldo are adding to that and will presumably cost very little in trade currency. Wages are whatever, we got money we need to spend.

Load up for any of the gun free agent midfielders next year!

I knew I bookmarked this for a reason, here's the timeline:

Too long didn't read?

Gags left in dec 22- before he did that, he re-signed battle for 2 years AND set the contract payments structure for the whole team in 2023.

Why does this matter?
Because in January 2024, battle was given unrestricted free agent status based on not being in our top 25% paid players in 2023.

How did that happen?
Our mate gags set it up that way before he left in dec 2022.
He's a third tall defender, this year, who was playing poorly on the wing in 2022 and you reckon he should have been in the top 9 paid players at the club in 2022? Righto.
Gags was a fool.

As steadier said, if we wait we’ll need to rebuild again as the late 20s guys start falling over. We have a very thin mid career group

Also maxed out our cap on GOPs.

I wouldn't worry to much about the ruck , Soldo is just another body if needed if Marshall has a injury.
They could easily take the cotton wool off King and get him to do the job.
We have a lot of options forward with Hammer , Keller as well as the development of Heath who could easily break into the squad if needed.

Soldo is the type of player you would be okay with taking up a list spot.

What he isn’t is a player you hand over any trade capital for, especially in a deep draft. If we end up buckling and handing 43 over for crayon, I’d swap our F3s next year with port but that would be it.

Got 2 years because his manager only wanted enough to get him to free agency.

As for the 25%, I could name 10 or 12 players in 2022 who deserved (or got) more money than Battle.

In the end its worked in our favour, we get Pick 8 in a draft with plenty of mids for a 3rd tall who is easily replaced.

Due to Hayes not being contracted could it be a swap with him , even though I feel Hayes may well be the better player but injuries have hurt his career.
Picking up MaCrae for a 3rd , Soldo with a swap of players will instantly make our team stronger and then hitting the draft with 2 first round picks and a 2nd round pick we will be in good shape for the future.

Who do you suggest

I will reserve judgement till the end of the draft and trade period.

However, I see this draft/trade period as our most crucial for a long, long, time.

Get it right and we could position the club for a good chance of becoming a true contender.

Get it wrong and we may just crack the finals again next year, but as a false dawn before sinking again.

With Tassie coming, and no real advantages over teams in terms of acquiring players we really must absolutely nail what we get if we hopefully get picks 7 and 8. Get two really good talents and that could really boost our future.

That will need to be boosted with some wise value picks to better balance the team. A cheap Soldo may help, an expensive Soldo may hinder continue improvement.

Either future is possible. Someone like Soldo IF we get him for bugga all because Port want to get out of his remaining contact could provide a bit of reasonable depth. If we trade him in or more than that and then say lose pick 7 or 8 on an unwise trade, then that may make us somewhat more competitive next season, but not really set us up for sustained improvement.

Macrea hopefully comes in cheap as a salary dump, and Soldo if he comes, as does no seem likely, hopefully also comes in cheap.

I really, really, want to see us this period bring in some genuinely good young talent, and will be delighted if we can land two young genuinely good midfield prospects.

As stated at the top, I will reserve judgement till the end of the draft and trade period. But for now I am quite nervous.

We spoke heavily about the 🦞 and Soldo potentially coming to the Saints in this very forum for ages before it happened and now it’s happening.
Are we the chicken 🐓 or the egg 🥚????
Do we drive reality from here?
I’m feeling omnipresent at the moment.
Of course if it all goes campaigner up it’s entirely the clubs fault.
Quick! Start talking endlessly about Hayley Reid coming to us

Our leading Brownlow vote getter (against the trend), #1 among ruckmen, about to romp in our B&F and...

... we want to change his role.

Soldo got moved aside by Jordan Sweet.

Its more a case of Caminitti & Mitchito being moved aside for Soldo.

I don’t think Roma’s role is going to change much at all.
