Any offer that Essendon make to North or WC we can better.

They offer 9 + Future 1st for 2 or 3

We can come over the top and offer 8 + Future 1st for 2 or 3

So either way you slice it Essendon needs to deal with us.

We will offer them Future 1st + 26 and a later 3rd round pick swap. Thats a good deal for them so let them choose carrot or the stick.

I think that’s right, although the problem for Essendon is that pick 9 is a long way away from picks 2 or 3. And they would need to trade-out a F1 as well. That might not appeal to NM or WCE who want picks this year.

In an even draft Essendon are probably better advised to trade-out and receive a second rounder (to match the bid) and a F1 (that they can then use to jump back in).

Alternatively, they could look to split 9 for 15 & 16 and match the Kako bid with one of those picks (with the benefit of the discount) and then use the other pick at the draft table.

Whether GWS would want to do that though is another question.

God no. If we’re trading a future first for pick 9 they’re not getting pick 26 attached to it.

We could well regress in terms of wins/losses and I think most other clubs in the league would bank on us doing so.

Future first and a 3rd for pick 9 maybe but pick 26 in this draft is incredibly value given the depth and could land you a player not too dissimilar to the calibre of pick 9.
If you're negotiating you have to be aware and consider the other party's position - Essendon need enough points to pick up Kako - if they give us 9, what are they left with this year if we only give them futures? You will never get what you want in a negotiation if your offer leaves the other party destitute! You need to go in knowing what you are prepared to give up, prepared to accept and also prepared to walk away because a mutually acceptable position cannot be reached.

So what if we lose 26 in that scenario - we have gained 9 !!

Then trade 9 to GWS for 15 & 16!

LDU, Brayshaw and Callaghan are Free Agents so we will offer big big coin to get them across. Hopefully our offer is enough so much that the clubs don’t want to match it and would rather take a first round compo instead.
Might need to revisit the free agent rules if you think Callaghan is even close to a free agent.

Flanker or back pocket small defender?

Yes. On small to mediums and not talls.

I just mentioned Webster replacement as I personally would have Nas and Sincs on the two HBFs.

Socker is also available, along with McLennan to rotate through, or to be back up.

What do you think about Carlton?
It seems like they should make finals again next year, but something about the list seems lacking to me, and I'm really not convinced Voss is a good coach.

I'll fess up and say I hate them and would love them to fail, but that's not the reason I'm predicting their fall, they just seem like their luck might have just run out.
Hate them too, but they had one of the worst injury runs of all time. I know they had more to play for than us, but we were in pretty decent firm and playing to win too. Prior to that run of injuries they were top two iirc.

I agree on Voss being doubtful, but I still think they’ll have as much chance as anyone for top 4 (or higher).

Yeah we’ve got some choices there for sure. Well stocked if you’ll pardon the pun.

They need to get ahead of it. They won’t get the best deal. It will be the lesser of two evils but they will have to do it
I wonder who would move that far back though? North perhaps and take a ping at a tall they want is still there? Richmond likely has 6 and 10, so they either move up with those or otherwise I doubt they move backwards with 6 if they have 10 (from Freo). WC or Melbourne?

The problem for Essendon is that they don’t have anything to give except next year’s pick to get up the order. And it’s hard to see the Eagles wanting to give up the strength of their hand this year.

That is the plan, but he’s been challenged in post season review on how much he really wants it. Let’s see how he responds over summer. I personally think he’s got the tools to be an all aus level player in the future, but he has to become really hungry to achieve that.
Interesting that that’s the feedback for him - all that chat after the draft about how he thought he had missed out and so grateful for the opportunity etc etc. must not have really sunk in yet. Strikes me as the type that needs a strict day-to-day checklist of work to put in over the break because he struggles to manage it himself.

I agree I think his upside is quite high, but will the penny drop…

The total consideration in any negotiation is ROI. Yes both parties need to mutually benefit, but it’s the sum of all costs.

Ultimately, the sum of a future first and pick 26 in what is an incredibly even draft from pick 12-30 doesn’t equate to a risk worth taking IMO. Essendons position of needing points this year can be found through other means but it’s not up to St Kilda to satisfy both their desire to opt out of the first round and to ensure they have picks in this draft.

Our responsibility is to ourselves and overall, our future first and pick 26 will be more impactful pick 9 which is what you’re trading for in isolation, not pick 15 + 16.

We have 7 + 8. Extraordinary position to be in.

Just sit back and wait for other clubs to come to us. Would need to be a pretty darn good offer otherwise we take the picks to the draft with possibility of a live trade on the night.

I am sad Battle’s gone but am more than happy with the outcome.

Someone wrote - apologies, I can’t find it, otherwise I would add the quote - that they thought Angus Hastie (in response to a suggestion/hope that he might fill Battle’s boots) just didn’t have the size and speed for AFL football. Moreover, and this bit probably stung my curiosity, that he didn’t really have any stand out talents.

He’s 190cm.

What do people think about this? Honestly, will he make it?

Is he gonna end up in Paton territory? Fringe defender? Sandy/Sub/Saints Firsts/Sandy/Sub..etc..etc.

McLennan is 188, Wilkie is 191.

McLennan is definitely only a flanker. Webster replacement.

PS Battle is 193
Id hate to see McLennan playing on some of the blokes Jimmy has played on as he doesn't have the speed or mobility , Webster is horribly underrated on here by some ( Not saying you )
