Good recruiters don't get everything right but they don't bust top 10 picks. He did nail Chad Warner that year though so made up for it.
I ****ing hope Dalrymple nails it for us.

The draft is getting all the attention but it's SOS who this is sitting on atm. We need to turn p43, Hayes, Paton, Hotton and Membrey into MacLobster, Soldo and whoever else.
We must keep our future picks to be aggressive on draft night. Easier said than done IMHO.

Previous performance not guaranteeing future returns and all that.

An awful lot of emphasis is put on the head bloke but it seems to me the network they have underneath. We've never had the dollars to make us successful.

Dalrymple picked this and missed on that..Toce did great on this so better. Trout crap because he did this.

Seems to me at lot of focus on the end result but we have no understanding if we are playing in the same pool as the rest of the comp.

We were letting the football department go as long as they didn't ask for money but they had no KPIs. Trout was terrible. On every measure his recruiting was a fail.

Nearly nothing to show from every national draft from 2003 until 2018 and we didn't change things up shows a disregard. He was a failed assistant coach with no experience, given the keys to recruiting including a bottom out.

If we can't measure recruiters on the players they draft why have them? Just pull names from Cal Twomey's phantom.

Yeah, it's getting harder to lose players from this list now. Guys like Hotton and Van Es were injured not bad players. We are having to tip a better standard of player out these days.

I'm in agreement with the first part, but second part is a strike if given an opportunity at any point type of deal for me.

If we had a chance to grab a pick anywhere up to about 15 for next year's first I'd be jumping all over it.

For example pick 12 from Suns, stuff giving the Filth a chance to get back into the first round after throwing their pick away on Schultz. We should be all over that pick, surely John bloody Noble isn't much of a bargaining chip! If we have a chance to pry that away early days, we have to jump at it.

Good call, whilst Hotton types are a dime a dozen, I'd like to think we'd consider Van Es for a rookie spot, yes injury issues - but man that kid had plenty to work with.

Van Es was a huge lump of a lad, it is obvious the ankle is very serious otherwise we would have kept him.
Hope I am wrong and he gets back to footy somewhere.
Reminds me of Allen from 2008.

SOS and Dalrymple just have to get the best fit talent to win a flag. It's that simple

Suns are a big watch, especially if they end up handing over 6 for Rioli. Reckon they're our best chance of splitting 8 (into something like 12+20), I'd prefer to do that and hang onto our future first. Hope we've been interviewing Lombard

Yep

You’ve probably written the only post the entire BF forum would agree with….EVER 🤣
Look I strive for excellence on this forum. It's nice to land one in 47 thousand odd posts.

Totally agree on that Gringo. If you have no money and the AFL, Newscorp and Nine are doing it for you why wouldn't you. Just have a chat with the kid to find out their internal character. Gives me an idea actually for some analytics.

Mind you recruiting then bleeds into our extremely poor development which we think (hope?) has also been fixed.

Pity that Finnis era had to (did) focus too much on bricks and mortar.

Fingers crossed we are in a new era where we can put everything into our onfield and unleash a large supporter group on an unsuspecting AFL community.

I agree that we are tracking towards a period of 'sustained success' without rocking the boat too much from our current path.

But my point is that without taking risks and instead playing it safe (like trying to land elite mids as RFAs which has never come close to happening for a small vic club)- this 'sustained success' is not going to look like much.

It's just going to look like regularly making elimination finals and keeping clear of bottom 4 for 5 years.

Big whoopie I say.

I'd much rather see us take some risks while we have elite guys like wilkie, roma, sincs in their prime and push our ceiling towards real flag contention.

For instance, giving up on the fantasy of elite RFA mids, and instead throwing mega bucks and 2 first rounders around for guys like callahan, ldu, brayshaw etc.

I hope our informal enquiries for zac merrett are just the tip of the iceberg- and we really are trying bigtime to get guys like him, even if it does cost first round pick(s).

It just speaks to the inequity of our comp that we have to accept the reality that we will never be a landing spot for the best free agents, unless we are in the top 4/5 best teams for a number of years. Free agency was great for the players but it was always going to lead to this situation as long as the big clubs get the same exposure, favourable draw and "marquee" games every year.

To stay on track, think we have to still take pick 7/8 into the draft and try land another young gun.

hahaha
I know I won't change your mind

So he's done about the same as those before him

Nas was a solid choice, no doubt Hobbs the inside mid we probably needed but hasn't been anywhere near as good
Owens & Windy touted top 30 picks - NGA
Adams a bust
Hayes and Leinert, could have been good if not for injury and another bust

Philapou or Tsatas, Essendon could have easily gone Pou and we end up with Tsatas, no-one would be hailing that
Van Es - bust
Hotton is hanging on by a thread
McLennon as an NGA rookie
Stocker and Camaniti were SoS selections
cant leave out Wilkie and Sharman, AA star and still a promising addition to the team, yet to still cement best 22

sorry, I don't see an irreplaceable recruiting superstar there, certainly not enough to get all huffy about a highly regarded recruiter replacing him.

Will be interesting to see what Toce does at Richmond with his plethora of picks, and similarly what Dalrymple does if we have 7,8 & 24.

If there's anyone who thinks Sharman isn't best 22, can I have some of what they're on? btw he was best 22 before this season, even more cemented in now.

Chad Warner at pick 39 is a great outcome for Sydney but not a good reflection on Dalrymple. If he rated Warner, he wouldn't have taken 3 duds (Stephens, Gould and Elijah Taylor) before Warner and risked someone else grabbing Warner.

so we should have taken Garcia in the first round last year? That's not quite how drafting works. Not sure I've seen someone say drafting a superstar late is actually bad drafting.
