Came in to ask if there was training today... was surprised to see the above. So only one main training session this week I take it? Is that normal on a 6 day break? I honestly thought we'd train a slight session today and then a proper main session on Thursday.
I assume they'll have review and a light run this afternoon. These sessions they dont tend to advertise given its just a light session.

generally would be a light today and main thurs, but guess they are mixing it around for pendles 400.
So guess main session tomorrow, day off thur?

I saw footage of training today with lot of focus on Pendles. Was that from another day?

So they are doing extra training this week by training today tomorrow and later in the week?

It’s not extra more like a normal training week when on a 6 day break
Main session tomorrow. Then captains run Friday

Out of everyone who's there. What do you guys think about who's on black team vs white.

Saw Quaynor, Maynard, Markov, Harrison were all in white whilst Parker, Richards, Krueger were all in black.

Does that point to our final 23 on Saturday you guys reckon?

Ha ha i just realised that I put the traning update from fb in injuries.

Fine mist enveloped the arena just before and as the players entered, with the trees beyond the river shrouded in the pervading gloom like ghostly spectres. A few hardy souls bedecked in their match day regalia waited eagerly for their favourites and shivered as they warded off the big chill. A big contingent of media with even bigger lenses thronged the pavilion side obviously gathered to capture the vibe surrounding the milestone of Pendles who’s leaving a giant footprint on his sport.

Lippa was the first to grace the arena; thereafter it became a steady procession.

For the record, though a few changed tops later on, here is the roll call of players in their original attire:

Blacks:

Lippa

Kreuger

Jamie

Cox

WHE

Howe

McStay

Schultz

Parker

Josh

Moore

Beau

Sidey

JDG

Pendles

White:

Macrae

Dean

Harry

Frampton

Tew

Reef

Allan

Oleg

Sullivan

Harrison

Ryan

Maynard

Brendon McCartney told the group to keep moving if they wanted to avoid feeling cold. Nick let go five audible F-bombs before striding out to the middle with the expletives within earshot of the adoring fans.

The infirmary had a few inpatients today: Begg, Steene and JDG and Kreuger. The first two named spent the whole session in rehab, while JDG and Kreuger participated in some drills. JDG was also prostrate at times receiving treatment from a physio. NK apparently hasn’t cleared concussion protocols yet so looks to be a non-starter against the arch enemy. JDG might be given extra time but will not be 100% fit. One wonders if he’s hoping to be part of this seminal match but will be put on ice soon given the imminent ending of our campaign one way or the other. He worked a bit on his agility and lateral movements while in rehab.

As per usual after the spontaneous kicking among wait, the whole group cleaved into two with the whites starting on the warm-up apparatus and the blacks involved in a contest drill. McCartney and Fraser were conducting this activity and were motivating the players to think “Corridor, corridor”, a message which was constantly reinforced by the leaders with the skipper and Cameron being particularly vocal. The name of Pendles became part of the urgent soundtrack of instructions as the players rehearsed their ball movement method. McCartney could be heard saying “It’s very important that we get this right.” At times a cry of “Good shape” reverberated around the oval. The handballs were slick during this drill and players moved the ball purposefully.

The two groups then swapped activities.

Thereafter followed four different groups with a lot of emphasis on contest work in various guises. Groundball specialised drills took place on the pavilion side of the ground, on the outer side there was some close-in handball dedicated drills featured, interspersed with some tackling.

Following this a large portion of players went to the John Cain Arena end and took part in some attacking zone work with leading forwards, goalkicking and the practising of extricating oneself from tricky contest situations.

In contrast the KPPs worked on one-on-one marking. This group comprised:

McStay, Moore, Cox, Cameron, Dean and Frampton with the two Darcys being the standout even though each player had at least one win. In fact, Moore belied the judgement that he can’t win one out against another opponent with some strong marking and body work, while Cameron’s sticky hands prevailed at times. McStay also took a few good grabs and once Billy in a fit of obvious pique threw his opponent out of the way and clunked the pill in a show of oaken strength.

The players then engaged in a whole ground ball movement activity wherein players between the arcs eschewed marking in favour of palming, sometimes over their shoulders, to running players who would grab the ball and pass to leading players or have a shot at the big sticks. This was a high-octane drill defined by slick and sharp work which is not always the case. Players seem to have a bit of a pep in their step, galvanised by the big occasion looming under the Saturday night lights.

Some of these activities were punctuated by the customary rehydration drills and consultation with the coaching staff.

Thereafter followed a pseudo match simulation with a difference. At the tennis centre end, the defenders who looked like the group destined to play against the Blues played sans opponents save for Kreuger moving around to stand the mark while another white top guarded some space. Their objective as a defensive unit seemed to be to develop coherence and guide the ball adroitly out of their area to the middle and forward zones where everyone had an opponent. Moore took over the directorial role occupied by Pendles in the GF, as he in stentorian voice, orchestrated where every ball carrier should be heading.

Interestingly the group of whites not required worked under the guidance of McCartney who delivered very succinct and specific tackling instructions telling them how a sweeping tackle must be executed. He provided a lot of encouragement and positive affirmation, especially to the likes of Tew, and Macrae who asked some questions. McCartney referenced recent AFL incidents, including Port players to illustrate his points. The white group who swapped to be in the sidelines tute and then reintegrated into the match simulation included: Macrae, Tew, IQ, Oleg, Allan, Reef, Richards, Harry, Ash, Dean, Ryan and WHE.

Some random observations of a few players:

Parker – kicks with precision, has neat skills and general footy nous. Seems to be enjoying his footy in a way which is commensurate with his confidence.

Pendles – the ageing milestone man looked as sharp as ever today. After, like Sidey, discarding the coat he initially wore to stave off the frigid air, he shone in his #10 black top providing a lesson in skills and professional for his younger charges.

Tew – is probably tiring but looks to be the future with his fluent movements and good skills. He also appears to be a willing learner as he soaked up every bit of advice proffered today.

Nick – is such a perfectionist, if he ever makes a mistakes he openly chastises himself a la the Bucks of days of yore.

Reef – is clearly out of favour but is moving very well at this juncture and marking and kicking confidently. Is he being fattened up for trading purposes.

Harrison – has not troubled the scorers much lately but he enjoyed sharking some contests and converting truly.

Jamie – still running around like a young pup; having breaks on the sidelines appear to rejuvenate him.

Moore – the recently much maligned captain really attacked the session with gusto obviously acutely aware of the importance of doing justice to the landmark Pendles achievement. He was robust in his instructions, looked to go up a level and celebrated joyously when dobbing a running goal from outside fifty.

It’s no easy task to overcome our biggest nemesis who have so much at stake at the weekend but at least the players are no longer showing the signs of torpor marking some recent outings if training is guide, especially the way they used their voices in maintaining the urgency.

At one point they formed a tight circle and jumped up and down chanting for a couple of minutes.

IQ, Markov were in white for the entire session.
Parker in black for the whole session

They split up into groups to work on fundamental elements of their game. Ground balls. Stoppages. Then they went into line groups, and the talls at either end of the ground would work on contest 1v 1 drills, while the midfielders did their own work.

Match sim was done in two parts, one involving stoppages, and starting at certain parts of the ground and moving the ball from there; and the other would be from centre bounce.

Lippa was on the wing.
Josh D was down back before finishing up.

Black forward line:

Mcstay. Cox. Schultz. Beau. WHE. Jamie. Hill

Black defence:

Moore. Howe. Parker. Maynard. Noble. Josh D

Reef still down back. Shame there is a VFL bye this week.
Jordy played through the middle.

Maybe it’s psychological by Fly, make him feel like he’s on the edge.
Personally I wouldn’t drop him, but I do wanna see more.
Cmon Isaac
I'm sure Fly & the coaches have had some frank discussions with all the players this year.

They better pull their finger out. And fast.

Hey Jen 👋 , you mentioned Jordy played in the middle, did he look restricted by his groin issues ? Be great if he can go full tilt v Blues 🤞
Looks as good as to be expected.
