There’s no way it’s true.

There might be clauses if he wins the Coleman Medal, the BnF and is All Australian that would see it go up but out of all the inflated numbers reported in the media during trade week, that is the least believable.

It can't be true

Would be absolutely all time if it is. The worst contract request ever made.

Owies is after opportunity, not a pay rise
Matt Owies’ manager Matt Bain has scoffed at a report that his client was demanding $800,000 per year to continue his AFL career.

The small forward is yet to be offered a contract at Carlton despite kicking 33 goals this season, and Bain told this masthead that Owies was “looking for opportunities to continue his career, rather than a pay rise”.

Taking a crack at the 23 and reserves with the likely changes so far, as well as a couple of predicted draft picks:

FB: McGovern Weitering Newman
HB: Cowan Haynes Saad
C: Acres Cerra Walsh
HF: Fogarty McKay E.Hollands
FF: Silvagni Curnow Williams

R: TDK Cripps Kemp

Int: O.Hollands (def/mid), Docherty (def/mid), Hewett (mid), Moir (fwd)

Sub: Motlop (fwd/mid)

Reserves

FB:
Cincotta Young L.Camporeale
HB:
Boyd Duffy M.Carroll
C: Wilson B.Camporeale Binns
HF: Durdin O'Keeffe Fantasia
FF: Cottrell Lemmey Hotton

R:
Pittonet Lord Hynes

Int:
Monahan
What picks did we have, Jimmae for Hynes & Hotton?

No extra KPD added (outside of Duffy - do you think he’s going to be a KPD?), either draft or DFA. Agree, think Haynes will be lining up as mobile CHB 1st up.

Interested to see if M.Carroll gets a 2nd year as a rookie vs a VFL look-in.

That's just a hypothetical where we get another top 20 pick. As it is, I think Hotton won't make it far into the teens (if at all), and Hynes might wind up top 10.

KPD wise there's a lot of options, though probably not early in the draft. Weideman is one I've mentioned in the bluemour thread: he's out of contract and Essendon are squeezed for list spots. If he's happy to play defence I think we might be a chance to grab him.

In the spirit of Jim I've taken a crack at what I think could/would like to be our 2025 line up. Houston I'm 50/50 on but I have a gut feeling we may land him so adjusted for his inclusion.

FB: Mitch McGovern - Jacob Weitering - Adam Saad
HB: Dan Houston - Nick Haynes - Nic Newman
C: Blake Acres - Patrick Cripps - Billy Wilson
HF: Lachie Fogarty - Harry McKay - Joe Berry
FF:
Ashton Moir - Charlie Curnow - Zac Williams

R: Tom Dekoning - Adam Cerra - Sam Walsh

Int: E.Hollands (fwd/mid) - Zak Johnson (mid/def) - Lachie Cowan (def/mid) - George Hewett (mid),

Sub: Sam Docherty (mid/def)

Reserves

FB:
Alex Cincotta - Lewis Young - Matt Duffy
HB:
Jordan Boyd - Jayden Laverde - L.Camporeale
C:
Ollie Hollands - B.Camporeale - Jaxon Binns
HF: Corey Durdin - Jack Silvagni - Orazio Fantasia
FF: Brodie Kemp - Harry Lemmey - Jesse Motlop

R: Marc Pittonet - Cooper Lord - MSD/Rookie

Int: Rob Monahan - Hudson O'Keefe - M.Carroll - ???

Sub: ???

Austin has mentioned 4 picks this draft. Still not sure how we get in a quality young KPD if we go hard at Houston. I wouldn't take Trainor at our first pick due to the concussion concerns and there's no other proven KPDs in that range. Probably missed something here but what the hell! Doch stiff to be sub but I'm not sure how well he'll hold up at his age and ACLs history.

Out - D.Akuei, A.Mirkov, J.Carroll, M.Kennedy, M.Owies, S.Durdin, J.Martin, C.Marchbank, D.Cuningham

In - D.Houston, N.Haynes, J.Berry, Z.Johnson, B.Campo, L.Campo, J.Laverde, M.Duffy, MSD/Rookie

I am appreciating various thoughts in this thread re LM strategy. I am also fascinated in how it interplays with 2025 and 2026, given other young players who will probably join the list in upcoming years (and draft picks required to gain them). I can see why we'd like to go to draft as much as possible this year not only from a salary cap and age demographic perspective, but also a broader LM perspective. Next 2 years will be significant in who is going out as well as who is coming in. I'd suspect there would be anything up to 4 players who'd retire at end of 2025 if we could win the big dance (McGovern, Docherty, Saad, Newman) but who might want to go around for another year if we don't. Throw in the possibility of the unexpected, such as the Dan Houston possibility, and interesting days.

MSD/Rookie gets eaten up by Lord.

Out: 6 x Senior, 2 x Rookie, 1 x Cat-B
In: 7 x Senior, 1 x Rookie (Lord), 1 x Cat-B (Duffy) plus Boyd must be upgraded. So you need to find a way to move 2 senior players to the rookie list.

If we can get 1-2 more top picks this year and hit a super draft, makes sense..

Next year will be the year to hit FA and trade hard when we have a lot of players OOC.

Apart from the certain re-signing of Weitering and TDK.

The OOC list below, are either re-signed, traded or delisted. Gives us some flexibility.

With the new rules we are probably going to need 2x first round picks in 2026 to pay for Walker.
