Could easily have got rid of Cotrell and Fantasia if we really needed list spots. Instead we get rid of our best clubman who played every game in practically every position asked. And Carrol who is only 22 years old.
I don't agree on Cottrell, we really missed him this year with his gut running and ability to pop up for a goal or two.

Fantasia I agree with and I also would have liked to see J Carroll given another year.

Maybe they are going to push Corey Durdin in to the midfield a bit more.

Might be drawing a long bow but I wonder if this is LM way of forcing more games into Binns, Lord, Wilson, Moir etc.

Your strength can become your weakness. Despite our injuries, we put solid players out there every week last year. But it meant the young guys didn’t get much game time to see their worth.

Voss won’t have any choice next year but to play youngsters at times and maybe that is the big picture the LM are looking at.

I like it. We were going nowhere and this gives us a chance to get some nice surprises coming through.

Are you suggesting 4 wingmen is too many or too few? 44 on the list. I'd suggest you need 4 specialist wingers for the senior and reserves side, plus another couple who are more utilities. We will add another winger type in Lucas Camporeale in the draft, and have others who could go to the wing if required.

Walsh stepped up in season one too. This sort of thing has become more and more prevalent in the AFL. The pathway has made these kids step up more quickly, at least the ones at the top of the draft. All teams have a couple of youngsters in them.
I'm saying we have the same amount of wingers as we do midfielders. Yes we'll add Ben Camporeale but who knows if or when he will be ready to play senior AFL football.

We still haven't addressed our biggest need. Leg speed.

We didn’t get rid of Kennedy. He wanted full midfield minutes, we said we couldn’t guarantee it, so we would help him get somewhere where he could do that. And Carroll wasn’t even playing full time mid when we had our injury plague

For me the underlying issue was injuries and injury management. Our list changes indicates panic from the MC and recruiting team. Yes, some players like Marchbank, Cuningham, Martin, Durdin needed to go. But getting rid of Kennedy, and Carroll whilst bringing in a 33 year old player who is cooked is bewildering.

It's not that unusual for clubs to break into finals, confront their limits and refresh the playing list accordingly, maybe with a down year in the process - Melbourne, Port, Richmond all recent examples. I think this is where we're at.

He was contracted though. Do you reckon he's getting full midfield minutes at the dogs with their midfield?

That's what I'd like to see. His disposal is pretty good on the run.

3 years for Cotrell? How many other clubs would've given him 3 years?? Haynes could've been picked up as a rookie.
Nobody else was going to pick him up.

List spots are at a premium. Yet we've got Cotrell, Haynes and Fantasia on there and traded/delisted Kennedy, Carroll and Owies??

How has this improved us?

Lord is still on the rookie list so he cannot play seniors unless someone is placed on the LTI list.

Wingers are midfielders. If you are talking only onballers, we need 3 in the 22, plus rotations off the bench or flankers who can take the occasional centre bounce. You don't need them all to be inside midfielders though. You need one bull, one defensive mid and one runner in the 6-6-6. So Cripps, Hewett and Walsh as the main 3 attendees. You rotate your Cerra/Lord types from the bench. You occasionally bring in Elijah or a youngster like Jagga Smith or Finn O'Sullivan who add genuine pace and dynamic movement. Docherty will 100% attend stoppages as well.

Kennedy left because he wasn't getting much midfield time. Carroll left because he wasn't getting enough games, and enough midfield time whether he was sub or not. Suddenly the loss of Carroll is the tipping point when he didn't attend many centre bounces anyway?

It just feels overly negative.

Do you reckon players that, as you suggest won't get more minutes at another club, is reason to keep them on our list? You answered your own question, which VFL program will benfit the most.

What does a contract mean? Does that give more reason for clubs, who already don't want to trade for these players, to pay more in a trade?

it doesn't matter. The Dogs sold him on their vision for him. He wanted to go there and he was freaking out when it got done with 4 minutes to go. If he doesn't get what he wants there, it's no longer our problem.

Kennedy left because Voss played him out of position nearly every game. Let's not sugar coat it.

Yes, because he wasn't getting enough midfield time. Isn't that what I said?

You are lamenting the lack of midfielders on our list when we lost two who weren't getting enough time so we played them out of position or as sub. Did you want us to drop the ones who are in our main rotation so these guys could feel better?

I don't blame Kennedy for seeking midfield opportunities, but as I said, we can only carry so many in our side at the same time. We had the same issue with Kennedy and Hewett in 2023 as well. Hewett was dropped for 2 games when he was in form this season. Kennedy suffered because he was versatile enough to play other positions. Teams have these headaches every single week. You can't keep 44 players happy, and you will lose some. Why do you think trade periods are so busy?

Oh dear.

Your argument is that we haven't fixed our main problem - lack of speed and then have a swipe at Voss for playing Kennedy out of position.

Do we then surmise that playing Kennedy on ball would fix our lack of pace in your mind?

My question is have we improved our list this off season based on what we've lost?

Exactly, might even get my wish and see some cameos from little Durds in the guts…I’m seeing a much slicker version of ourselves next year and I’m excited by it.

Rookies can play anywhere, anytime..don’t need to wait for someone to injured nowadays

I don’t think you’re drawing a long bow at all.

In NBA circles, they call what Austin has done “addition by subtraction.”

I love it.
