Let me take you back to 2014, the single worst draft/trade/recruitment period by any club in the history of the league.

Traded out Pick 7 & 19 for Kristian Jaksch and Mark Whiley

Pick 19 - Blaine Boekhurst
Pick 28 - Dillon Vojo-Rainbow
Pick 60 - Clem Smith
Pick 63 - Jayden Foster
PSD - Jason Tutt
Rookie draft - Billy Gowers, Brad Walsh, Tom Fields, Fraser Russell
Delisted free agent - Matthew Dick

Only positive was Liam Jones for Pick 46.
Combined with successive busts with our first pick in the draft …

2009 Pick 12 Kane Lucas
2010 Pick 18 Matthew Watson
2011 Pick 22 Josh Bootsma
2012 Pick 11 Troy Menzel

(Book-ended 2008 with Yarran Pick 6 and 2013 with Cripps Pick 13)

We are better at drafting than we were … but never any guarantees … with the picks he’s had I think Austin is tracking well …

2020 Pick 37 C Durdin (Pick 41 J Carroll)
2021 Pick 27 J Motlop
2022 Pick 11 O Holland (Pick 30 Cowan)
2023 Pick 29 A Moir

I was a believer in SOS and we had a terrible list at the end of Malthouse’s tenure in 2014 … and certainly some successes (2015 with Weitering, Harry and Charlie, and then 2018 with Walsh) and failures notwithstanding the players were highly rated (2016 SPS and 2017 Dow) … and taking TDK at Pick 30 in 2017 was brave at the time and brilliant with hindsight.

What we have trended better at is mainly getting our first pick right and not choosing as many busts later on in the draft.

Also that year: Jarrad Waite to norf, no compensation :skull:

EDIT: Garlett and Robinson too!

I don’t have an issue with any of our delistings or trades. None will hurt our list, though Owies, Kennedy & J.Carroll, would have been decent depth.

Think we will cut deeper next year. Also think Hewett will get pushed out of the midfield next year like Kennedy did this year.

It confuses me. After multiple years on the list we know what Durdin offers us, SFA. WTF would we waste a train on spot on him.

It looks like we’ll be taking predominately mids in the draft. I’d hope with our rookie spots, we’d be looking at KP, Small Forward or Mid/Forward depth:

Gone cold on DGB, I didn’t realise he was an undersized third tall at 194cm

Interesting point re DGB. Doesn't this make JSOS a far more appealing prospect as that second tall defender if he comes back ok from his knee?

Also worth noting that Nick Haynes who is not only 6 years older than JSOS but also 2cms shorter is likely an insurance policy at best.

I liked the rumour about JSOS to the backline.

Remind me how we traded 19 yet used it on BB

Oh it gets far worse...you appear to have ommited the part where we also gave up Waite and Garlett for nothing, who went to play a further 130+ games for 250+ goals combined.

With a name like Dillon Vojo-Rainbow, I am surprised he isn’t a household name.

For me the underlying issue was injuries and injury management. Our list changes indicates panic from the MC and recruiting team. Yes, some players like Marchbank, Cuningham, Martin, Durdin needed to go. But getting rid of Kennedy, and Carroll whilst bringing in a 33 year old player who is cooked is bewildering.
Kennedy and Carroll aren't best 22 and will go to waste languishing in the VFL unless we have injuries.

Both players will get pushed further and further away from out best 22 as pick 3 comes in, the Camporeale boys develop and Cody Walker comes in the following season.

End of next year Carroll and Kennedy are probably valueless. Carroll as it turns out was valueless this season.

The 33 year old will be best 22. He's a quality footballer who gives us 1-3 seasons to find a key defender to take his place while filling a much needed hole.

Ollie will go to HB and Cottrelll isn’t a wingman

Club has finally put faith in the next generation which I applaud
Ollie will likely become a half back who spends a bit of time on the wing. Like Docherty can. In fact they both probably pair up well as players who rotate together.

I'm hoping we have a really good look at our rotations next seasons and adjust players minutes. I'd like to see some of the rotation players get more minutes in the midfield.

Coaches worked out that Kennedy is a burst player, it's one of the key factors that revived his career from being delisted under Teague
That and being given a license to stay at home and run one way. Unfortunately Cripps and Hewett also need the same license. This was part of our revival at the back end of 2023. He's a good stay at home mid, but we have too many of them.

A touch drastic & reactive, IMHO.

This list isn’t as far away as you suggest.
Carroll gone, I think one more mid to go end of next season. Team balance, performance and salary will impact which one that is. If our youth really comes on it will be Hewett for the same reason this year it was Kennedy. We are very slowly modernising our onbal group.

Make no mistake, there will be a clean out of small forwards at the end of next year, we won't be able to have the clean out we will want to have because of too many being contracted. We will be complaining about these contracts in 10 or 11 months time and the ITK posters will be mentioning it, make no mistake. Players will be told to "explore options" but there won't be takers. We will be going hard at forwards and a more than likely, going hard at a key defender. I am hoping Haynes gives us a bit of time to find a key defender or someone we bring in this year steps up.

Our list requirements are hopefully shrinking.

Cincotta, like a heap of players, will get his chances in 2025. If he takes those chances he will be on the list in 2026 and if he doesn't he won't. Like a lot of players who's contracts expire next year.

Might be time to hop down from your "dumb contracts" high horse.
I'm not going to hop down because that's exactly what they are. List management has been good but there are some howlers along the way. As I said, this will be a conversation towards the end of next season. We are stuck with a number of forwards for a number of years who will likely not be playing AFL football unless there are injuries. I believe it's restricting our list changes currently, especially when it comes to DFA's. There are some contracts that are genuinely 'dumb'.

Are you saying we need a "Dan Houston" type player ?? :D :D

We have a long list of half backs. Hoping that some of our youth step up and become Houston like players. Or we go back to Docherty who has done it before being an AA half back. Houston would have been amazing but we have made the right decision going to the draft. We just could not get it done.

I don’t get the “Ollie to HB”.

I see a top flight HB having a damaging, penetrating kick & the body to float back & take a contested mark/impact the play thru strength/size - eg Houston/Stewart etc he also hasn’t got the burst of a running half back.

He definitely has positive attributes, but I think we are selling ourselves very short if he’s a contender at HB.

100% if I was an opposition coach, I would be working on isolating him and running the attack right through him

We've been crying out since day 1 for Voss to run more players through the middle, maybe Austin and co will have finally forced the issue

It's off the back of some strong late season games. He has good defensive skills and reads the game well from that position. Hoping he develops into a similar player to Kade Simpson who was a very good half back. I think he is still an underdeveloped player, you would think there is more development in him.

Definitely there’s improvement & development to be had but Kade was an absolute freak of nature & had a massive leg for his size, plus was damn near indestructible & fearless.

If he was an opposition player at HB, u would work to isolate & man up Kemp on him & he would dead-set destroy him.

Early days he did and he continually stops doing it. He's not a tactically sound coach. I think he has good head coach qualities but the strong tactics and match day management is not there. I think the issue is all the c graders around him. I was hoping we would see more changes in our coaching department but so far nothing. I'm all for a midfield coach, I don't like our tactics in there.

In terms of managing minutes. I think we could use burst/impact players in the middle more. Williams, Durdin, Motlop for 5 minutes a quarter in the middle. Let Cripps sit in the goal square more. Let Cerra go forward a little. Give McKay more time in the ruck and little more time forward for TDK instead of massive minutes for TDK with bursts from McKay.

It would have a positive impact on opposition tactics against us. On injuries. Performance and keeping players fresh for a strong finish in game and in season. Tactically we flog some players pretty hard.

I wouldn’t be so sure.
We just delisted or traded 3 half-forwards/small forwards. Fantasia has 1 year left.
