Him and Carroll probably competing for one spot. (3rd tall (back or forward in mcmahons case))

Durdin and DGB for the other (KPD).
McMahon can also play as a forward, I'd be adding him to the list along with the best option as a KPD, hopefully a draftee while we still have Young and Haynes

I think there is a high chance that the type of tall we get in the National Draft heavily affects who we take as a SSP.

If it's a lockdown key, then Grainger-Barass's chances increase as a McGovern back-up.

If it's more an intercept type, then Durdin seems more likely

Who says he will even be a KPB?

I think he should stay forward, and that Kemp should be training up as a mid that rests forward, we can even use Jack to spell him in midfield.

Jack's form as a forward finally hit its peak just before injury took him out of the 2023 season.

Jack as a defender has been done before as a reactionary move by Voss, and his pace was shown up. They'll keep putting him as a deep defender and he will look silly, especially coming back from an ACL.

I'm all for having him train there as a backup to give our list flexibility and keep Kemp in attacking roles, but Jack is in my best 22 as a forward.
Agree with all of this
Everyone thinks he will be a great defender but (imo) is blinded by his father’s form.
It’s been tried and he is too slow. He is a competitor but it won’t work
Would love him to keep a fwd role and play second ruck to TDK
Sos is versatile af, does well when he goes in the ruck, is smart and handy when the ball hits the deck

Hasnt really been tried. The odd game in the reserves. Maybe patches in the seniors. Hes never properly trained there. Not for lack of ability. Hes just been more needed elsewhere.

Worth a crack. Could always revert if its a fail.

You’d think it will be DGB and McMahon who get the spots should they impress. Durdin is way too injury prone to be relied upon as backup and McMahon is more of a positional need than Carroll. DGB still has age on his side to make good of a career and fulfil potential.

S Durdin, M Carroll and Grainger-Barrass have all been committed to as train-ons already (if not drafted). There's likely to be one more train-on player that hasn't been announced. Duffy has been listed as a Cat-B player in an AFL published article, so reasonably safe to assume that is correct.

Good chance that McMahon gets either the fourth train-on spot, or a pick in the rookie draft. Ramshaw highly unlikely I'd have thought. Next best chance from our VFL side would be Will White.
Couldn’t you have a few of the VFL players front up for most (all) of the sessions at the club for an extra view at a few players as train-ons?
SSP trials do get paid a wage for their efforts however.

Yeah, as far as I know, there's nothing stopping us ignoring all four of the train-ons and picking someone else (e.g. Will White). But yes, the difference is, that the train-ons get paid $1000/wk which I guess gives them the opportunity to focus full time on training with the main group.

RE: Sellwood - he hasn't nominated for the draft, so I don't think he can be selected in the SSP (or MSD). AFAIK, he's never been on an AFL list?

See rules here:

Only going off another article, it mentioned Selwood was only able to be picked up as a SSP, i doubt we would be meeting or showing interest in players we were unable to select, but who knows.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused about that. Maybe there's something to it we don't know about. But I had a look at the full list of draft nominees, and he wasn't there, so definitely didn't nominate. And the SSP rules are pretty clear on that - only other pathway is if he has previously been on an AFL list, and AFAIK he hasn't.

Durdin will stay injury free long enough to get on the list, then wreck himself after signing on. Bookmark it.

Poor ol' Matt Carroll picked a horrible time to get a long term injury in his first year on a rookie list.

With the Campo boys coming in, I can see Lucas being groomed for a half back role, maybe even Ollie....or possibly even Duff with his run and dash.

I totally agree that DGB and McMahon should be the front runners - especially McMahon. He's way ahead of Lemmey right now in his forward craft imo, and a genuine back up 3rd forward. Reckon big Lem needs to be pushing for a senior debut this year if he's gonna be retained.

There's no reason Carroll can't be developed on our VFL list for another year.

I don’t get why we are wasting train on spots on Durdin, Carroll and McMahon.

They have all been at the club long enough to know if they are worth the list spot or not. If yes then give them a spot.

They could keep fit away from the club and we could use the train on for players we don’t know about. Phillips, Hotton & Selwood could have been given an opportunity.

FFS Durdin has played 2 games in 5 years at the club and got injured again in both of those games.

I agree Durdin should be long gone but he has only been on our list since mid 2022. A long way from 5 years
