The reason clubs don't do that is that the no.1 pick gets a financial bonus for being pick 1 as well as the media implications that follow. There's a financial reward to being pick 1 that clubs want their pick to receive. Knowing a club will match a pick 1 bid then taking the guy they are ending up with either way just means they cost a kid they were always taking those rewards.

Though from pick 2 onwards I agree. I couldn't believe Daicos made it to pick 3 before a bid, should absolutely have been bid at 2.
Well then you'll be even more shocked to realise Daicos slid even further to pick 4!

Darcy was bid on at pick 2 in that draft which was also interesting at the time for me (with all the hype surrounding Daicos). But it does look like that was actually a good call... the kid is a gun

Could we just sign Phillips
As for my limited viewing, he looks to be the best contested mark (or spoiler) and I think this is something we lack (Lemmey, Pito, O'Keefe are not particularly good marks from what I've seen). However, I would love to know how Phillips vs McMahon would go against each other in the air.

I'd have Phillips as our 2nd best genuine KPD

Sam Collins MKII, but a better interceptor

Hard to argue with those sentiments. Guess we have the luxury of a full season to test out the durability and compatibility with potential team mates. Logic says that if the club is prepared to shop Youngy, he probably would not be retained beyond his current contract. HOF likely to need 2-3 years to be up to speed, so we need a viable second KPD, along with a depth option.

I like what McMahon would offer, but realistically, if Kemp is designated as a forward, JSOS is back in the mix, O’Keeffe having more forward credentials than Pitto, Moir a likely third tall option and potentially Lemmey coming in to his own as an AFL prospect, he could be surplus to our needs.

I like the bloke, and his team mates like him as well as being a good mentor type, but it is hard to consider Sam Durdin a viable option beside the other younger and seemingly more durable types

Me personally, I am quite keen on Matt Carroll getting a second bite at the apple.

Like him, and he's got a year at the club, even if it was only absorbing the game plan stuff.

I think McMahon offers cover both ends of the ground

While we supposedly allowed Young to explore options, we really didn't shut down the Kemp enquires either

Thankfully, it looks like Kemp will play forward, but he needs to cement a spot, otherwise he might struggle to stay in the game

Couldn’t agree more. If we don’t sign him in the pre season. We have to sign him up mid season draft. his the perfect size , good interceptor.

I think he will get an SSP spot somewhere

I like Phillips when I saw him at Port Melbourne. Hoped we get him last pre season when Hawks got him. He looks the good to me

He is big, strong and mobile and only 25.

Why then did the Hawks only give him one game and delist him? (I know they got Barrass & Battle) but you need depth and quality

Also, no other clubs wanted him for nothing? There was a lot of talk of clubs wanting him but nothing happened. Why?

I’d love to know a recruiters perspective as to me he looks like a very good KPD and there aren’t many around

PS as for McMahon I just don’t see what he does at transferring to AFL. Hope I’m wrong

Depth is necessary, but so are list spots. DGB and Phillips were out of contract and suddenly moving down the pecking order - made them expendable.

Why did neither get picked up by any other club? Which other clubs went and recruited budget mature-age KPDs in the Rookie/Preseason drafts, or SSP period to date?

I think they've come to us this preseason because their managers have rightly deduced that we're the club with the biggest need for that type, and we have two spots open so there is opportunity. We're also VIC-based, so neither player needs to travel interstate for a preseason that may not amount to anything. We also signed Phillips to our VFL squad, so have clearly afforded him some degree of employment security in a playing sense - that may have been a condition from his management if there were other clubs sniffing around.

Gut feel is we'll elevate Phillips in the SSP. Think he's the best fit, and the most fit, of our train-on talls. McMahon an option too, but Lemmey looks like he's taking a big step forward this year, so the "swingman" second tall spot may well be covered there. Plus JSOS back in the mix, Haynes recruited and Kemp training forward...I think a genuine KPP needs to be the priority.

DGB is a 3rd tall interception player, decent disposal, courageous and flies into packs for his marks and spoiling, but his main problematic weakness still is his defensive one on one ability, if it was at a reasonable level he wouldn’t havre been let go by the hawks…

Carlton VFL reserves list, work on your game, show the required improvement needed, you enhance your chances in being picked up…

Lemmey by my eye atm is a forward, also a pinch hit in the ruck, great athleticism and skills for a KPF, only two years which has provided some marginal improvement and highlights, was trialled down in defence for three weeks which didn’t provide anything besides the last game finally showing something in the second half, where he provided some good defensive application and marking, he needs to apply more aggression…

I’m another who believes Phillips ishould be at least on our rookie list, we should have actually selected him up last year when he was available, our list was and is in absolute need of another KPD…

A number of people pushing for Phillips and fair enough. Looks exactly what we need

The question still for me is we offered Durdin Carroll and DBG train on spots and not Phillips I know we can still pick him but seems down the order?

I’ll be very interested how this plays out. Talk internally is that Durdin is still preference if he gets through. Phillips in VFL may be back up come mid season if he breaks down?

I’m honestly not sure our thinking

Will be in my Best 23 if he does!!

Same

Smart by the club, you are allowed 2 train on players for each spot available, so signing Phillips to the VFL is a great ploy to still compete for one of those spots

While he is a decent player, i have little faith in Durdin, as his body has never allowed him to stay on the park, his entire career

It's a no brainer for me, just like Bailey Banfield over O'Shea

While I've always thought Austin has been somewhat conservative, picking higher floor players has certainly improved the list, compared to SOS's hit and miss approach when targeting risk/reward types

Looking back now, some of those top 10/1st rounders, many not even in the game or fringe types elsewhere is damning

Interesting to see how this plays out.
IMO Phillips has proven himself to be one of the better state league KPD.
Durdin has struggled to get on the park & DGB has just struggled but the club has displayed some interest in having them.

Durdin is more than capable, but is his body. Phillips would be somewhat seamless and believe it would be the right fit. DGB, just hasn't come on, I guess somewhat similar to Kemp

Ultimately, only the club knows how the 3 are travelling

DGB struggled at VFL level at times, I'd have him as fair way behind Kemp at present.
I'm less bullish re: Durdin, though that may be too heavily informed by his time at North.

I'm sure we'll know soon enough.
