I might be on my own here but I'm finding it really hard to see the hype on Reid.

His team was getting belted. It's in the 3rd qtr. Geelong are hardly defending like they're lives depend on it.

4 easy goals.

He's hardly winning his own ball nor running through the midfield.

Wasn’t it his 1st game ?

Mate, if that was a St Kilda debutant we’d have anointed him the second coming of Jesus Christ and simultaneously cleared the supermarkets of lube and tissues.

We have few players on our list who can kick ‘4 easy goals’ in a game, let alone a debutant in a quarter on the road against a premiership favourite. It’s a bloody impressive effort

The hype is that some poor souls need the validation ATM and the anomaly of the 4 goals is something to latch on to. Never mind they were the easiest 4 goals you're ever gonna see, or the fact he was unsighted for the rest of the game. Still, a drubbing at the cattery is hardly the kid's fault and he executed well so it's good to have a moment in the sun.

Good on the kid, it was good to watch
Forum would go into meltdown if a Saint done it
They’re all easy goals from the comfort of your lounge chair

Yeah, nah.
You're either in denial bias or an ordinary judge of footy smarts. 😉

He got them back within 4 goals and their coach was fuming. The cats piled it on in the next quarter, there was no switching off.

It's one thing to be in a purple patch, but the way he got in their heads at the end of Q3, if the ball went in there another 5 times he would have kicked another 3 The whole team lifted on adrenaline until the siren killed their buzz.

I think it was the 2nd goal. It looked simple, but the way he weaved several times to keep himself in the blind spot of the defender showed exactly the kind of awareness that our players lack.

I'm not sure how he'll go as a mid in the long run, but he's shown enough in one game to suggest he was a steal at that pick.

I'm still excited about our picks... they must be damn good to be picked so far ahead of Murphy.

Losing Howard was a huge blow given our lack of key defensive depth, but in what world did our coaches believe that Cordy & Wilkie would be able to cope with opposition key forwards. Yesterday it was obvious that Nicks knew he could stretch our under sized defence, as he also had Dawson and Curtin forward.

Shoenmaker is not likely to become a key positional defender, he simply doesnt have the contested or over head game. He looks like his best position will be a tall flanker, but yesterday he had his lack of leg speed exposed by his much smaller opponents. He is going to need time to develop, but is worth persisting with.

Surely the club could see the above over the pre season? Caminiti should have been moved and prepared for a full time defensive position. Given the benefit of training and preparing for the role over the preseason. Our lack of ready to play key positional talls and quality midfielders highlights just how bad and unbalanced our list is at present. Lyon and other football dept staff have had an absolute mare over the preseason - our list rebuild, injury management, and team readiness are all questionable.

With the list rebuild no doubt they will say they are looking at the long term, but they have basically flushed any capacity to remain competitive this year down the toilet.

Reid hasn't put a foot wrong all pre season
Freo have a plethora of mids and still chose Murphy Reid.
In one pre season he has jumped ahead of many experienced mids and even Erasmus, Simpson and Johnson who are internally rated very highly.

We drafted key defenders with 2 of our first 3 picks. We knew its a position of need. I'm just amazed that we persevered with Cordy down back when we know what we're going to get. I don't get the logic behind not playing Barrat. Yes its his first game and he is getting thrown to the wolves, but we desperately need a bit more fight down there. How much worse than Cordy could he actually be?

You cant expect tall 18 yo kids to come in and play against forward lines the size of Adelaide's. You are basically setting them up to fail or even worse get seriously injured. Tauru in particular has little body development and would get physically smashed. Moving forward Barrat and Tauru will most likely be a two key defensive pillars but that expectation is some time away.

Have a look at how Hawthorn have developed their list, they brought in Battle and Barrass, yet they still grabbed another quality tall defender Noah Mraz 198cms at the draft. Not only that they have Blanck 24yo ready to return to the side.

They might be but we will still be crying out for elite midfielders!

Surely everyone understands the importance of a dominant midfield and its a long bow to draw that Travaglia is going to become an elite midfielder. People have short memories the club thought the same of Clark & Coffield and before that Billings & Dan McKenzie, players very rarely adapt.

Attracting free agents will be twice as hard when we serve up stuff like today.
So losing doesn't help our cause in attracting free agents, yet 3 posts back you wanted to throw the Carlton game last year to get a Decent Mid.

I believe all clubs have academy we have one
Gold Coast and Sydeny have the most
There is also a large number of father sons Dees, Collingwood and Carlton again.

So let's rebuild using the draft.

Does a way we can build a premiership list actually exist? I mean, with the current compromised system, it is even possible?

You cant have it both ways! Last years draft was a known elite top end with midfielders and we managed to win enough games to miss the lot. Hence we now need to rely on attracting free agents - its not rocket science but obviously far too advanced for some. This years draft is heavily compromised with academy players taking up many of the expected top spots, so if we do finish lower we will picking from the scraps.

Brisbane picked before us despite winning the premiership.

We couldnt control that, we could affect our ladder position. Its like being told the lottery winning ticket is placed between 1 & 7 and we chose 8.

Did you watch Draper yesterday, he will be a star.
Draper couldn't have entered an easier situation yesterday. I'm sure he will be fine.

If you want St Kilda to lose, you have to commit to attend desired losses. You want the speculative good that comes with higher draft picks, it's only fair (and required if you want a club to support) that you have to be in attendance for the dross.

Tell that to the Richmond, North, Carlton, Adelaide and Melbourne supporters who will be watching their elite midfielders spin webs around our GOP's for the next 12 or so years.

Ps I live interstate and anyone who had an eye on the draft last season knew where we landed.

Carlton traded for that pick, right? Could have sworn they played a final right after we beat them.

The issue with bottoming out in 2025 is ever rising again. The bottom of the ladder has never been further away from the top.
