Replacement is a fair way down the road. We don't even have one to partner with him. Won't hear it about Darling, he's just a stopgap, like Teakle and Pink
Darling gives time for some dust settle re: Comben's final position as well as Mattlock/Wawson to develop and settle into a position. The argument for pure KPF is fine but Comben was a fwd prior to last year, Wawson was a fwd prior to his draft year, and Mattlock was a genuine swing in the coates league with 27 goals

True. To me, the simplest solution would be to identify a key forward and go after him, like we did with Comben before he turned out to have the durability of wet tissue paper, but if we want to do the key position Harlem shuffle, I guess that's our prerogative

I think we'll have to draft it. The FA/Trade market is a bit thin as most will re-sign with their clubs imo.
It might be someone we have already (Chom, Mattlock, Goad, Maley) but given we tried to get Jack Whitlock as well suggests we are after a genuine key forward. The development this year and then later trade week will be interesting.

I think it's unlikely we'll play 3x ~200cm (chom/mattlock/wawson) blokes down back if they all come on as we hope, so someone will be pushed/concentrated forward before Darling rolls off. Goad is interesting as Xerri has a monopoly on the ruck spot for foreseeable future, so Goad likely needs an extra string to play 1s once he's ready, depending on context. Leading out of the square feels likely given his attributes. Maley seems a more raw version of chom with contested marking stats maxed out, and as a ruck//fwd in vfl is rounding out down back preseason so far.

Essentially my point is I think we have plenty of latent talent that list management is happy to pool across fwd/def to see where they land. If it looks like several aren't coming on as expected then I suspect we'll look at FA, but my gut feeling is we're in a much better place list wise than most externally would give us credit for; again it will depend entirely on development. Luckily enough we've invested in 4 dev coaches

Agree there will be a shuffle going on given Logue/Chom/Mattlock/Wawson down back. But I hope we're thinking about the replacement of Darling, Pink, Teakle and Kal Dawson soon enough. Add at least one key forward to develop at VFL level this draft imo and ideally add McCartney in 2026 if he chooses us. Then we'd be pretty set for talls.

Hey may be a bit on the head - but Noah Balta is the guy I’d be offering a big cheque to
EFA.

But I wouldn’t be offering him the big bucks. He is basically just Comben if his bones weren’t made out of pretzels.
Aggressive athletic tall with good intercept ability but questionable decision making? Nah

Larkey's 26 - that's some serious forward planning!
Larkey will be 27 when we draft the player and a developing KPF can take 4+ years.

Larkey was drafted in 2016 and didn't kick 40+ goals until 2021. JUH was a number 1 pick and didn't kick 40+ until his 4th season.

Larkey would probably be comfortably in his 30s before that player would be expected to be ready to supplant him as our leading goal kicker.

And that's ignoring that if he ever actually misses some games in the meantime then we'll be screwed for KPF goal kickers.
