Player Watch #21: Callum Coleman-Jones - out for season after suffering Achilles rupture vs CFC on GoodFriday - go well CCJ

If i remembered correctly, we tried to use him in key position where he was the interception defender at hawthorn. A change of role in a new scenery did wonders.
Different memories I guess. I loved him, before he went all 'Hollywood', and a rookie player going for a pick in the 20s (I think) shows he was valued by both clubs.

We wanted to keep Gibson. Rock tried to play him as a mid which he didn't like but he had a good relationship with Laidley.

The coaching vacancy plus Clarkson getting in his ear tipped things over and he chased glory which unfortunately paid off in spades for him.

As you say, rock’s brain wave had a lot to do with it; personally I thought the final straw for Gibson was a moment at Docklands when he took the ball at a centre bounce and kicked the ball the wrong way, and the crowd laughed at him. As it proved, he had the last laugh

The issue with Hale was simply that we deemed McIntosh a better ruckman, wasn't it?

Hale was never poor for us and don't ever remember him being a whipping boy.

McIntosh might've ended up as a better pure ruckman but think Hale offered more as an overall package.
From memory we had H in the ruck, Drew up forward, and Goldy coming through. Hale was expendable. He was never a bad footballer.

I think we was choosing between Hawthorn and Melbourne. Good choice. If he goes to Melbourne he's probably long forgotten by now.

It's hard to fault the thought process behind it. A bloke of Gibson size and skill set could have been a formidable midfielder.

No point though if can't get buy in from the individual.

Especially the size of our midfield at the time, we were running simmo, wells, boomer etc.
all those guys were slight, compared to the competition, we needed some big bodies in there.

I'm convinced by years end he will be a valued, serviceable role player in our team. Has found the intent, has got the right role, and the weight of responsibility in the team will do him well. Not expecting Dean Cox but am cautiously optimistic in him becoming one of those beloved unco 2nd Ruck/forwards who play roles in premiership sides.

Either that, or cost you a flag with a miss from 10m out in the GF on a slight angle, kicking 0.3 ;)

When we are discussing the performance of a player we need to judge him against the criteria of his recruitment. CCJ was brought to the club to give whoever is the no.1 ruck a chopout, i.e. 15 to 30% per match. He will also give whoever is the no.1 key fwd to be a secondary target.

As far as i am concerned, he has been doing exactly that. He is not corey mckernan ala 1993 to 2000, i.e. explosive ruck/dominant key fwd. He is not aaron sandiland/gawn i.e. monster dominant ruck.

He isn't the best ruck by a longshot, he also isn't anywhere near a good key fwd but under a coach, he will be moulded into a very useful role player for the club for years to come.

His best is good to watch but his worst is god awful.

He will get a genuine crack this year and needs to use his body a lot more. Especially when GWS seem to have a more physical intensity about them.

He’s terrible. Not his fault, doesn’t have the arhleticism or football brain to compensate for it. If he was a serviceable ruckman he’d potentially have an AFL career but he’s absolutely shocking in that role, has been week after week.

Exactly. Doesn’t deserve hate.

Doesn’t deserve a game either

He actually started okay. Was getting around the ground and taking marks.

Problem is that he is glacial and, despite his size, not a presence at all.

His role is to take contested marks, compete in the air / ruck and kick goals. He is not doing enough.

Disagree think he has those names covered.
