So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

I like the 1990 cutoff.

From a purely selfish point of view my problem with a 1990 cut off is that I am far less familiar with the mid to lesser players from that era as I am too young to really remember much of their careers. I suspect the same is true for a lot of people on this forum.

For instance, if I was selecting a 21st century team I would quite happily use Héritier Lumumba as a late pick for my team as I really rated him as a player, but I would not know the 90's equivalent of Lumumba, a player who I believe was underrated as I never really watched the players of that era. Going back to 1990 sort of creates a less precise mock draft due to so many people not having been old enough to really remember the era well.

All that would happen is some people would take Ben Hart, Rohan Smith, Gavin Wanganeen, Andy McKay, Michael Mansfield, Ang Christou (I'm sure you're familiar with a few of them) etc while you take Lumumba.

As am I but that's what footy wire is for.

finally kornes gets his man to the pear and FINALLY all those 'rumours' - the ones kornes kept feeding the hungry media - are true, and kysaiah pickett is a power playa

he's currently tracking statistically second only to the wizard and mick malhouse's favourite --pist as a small forward for the ages

so that's a defensive general (tom stewart), a gun tall forward (tom lynch), and an excitement machine (koz) into the existing pear 23, and i'm confident they'll all play from rd 1...

are we going to a fourth round?

Yes I think we will do a 4th round. That feels like a good point to go to.

This is blasphemy Wanganeen Hart comparison to Harry Obrien!
To be fair I was just reeling off quality half backs (some superstars, some a little more under the radar) from the 90s to highlight the depth. Many more could've been named who started peaking in the early to mid 2000's.

If we did that draft you have 18 teams and 36 half backs. That's about 12 from the 90's, 12 from the 00's and 12 from the 10's/20's. Plenty to go around.

ok ok haha. How many ok half backs can you name?
Garrick Ibbotson, Brett Jones, Josh Hunt, Greg Tivendale, Michael Prior, Damien Hardwick there is quite a few!

Problem for me, and I suspect a lot of others on this site is how many people where actually weatched Hart play? I knew so little about him I assumed he was Royce Hart before I looked him up and realised Royce was born in 1948 so they had to be referring to someone else.

I couldn't include Shaun in the team simply because I know so little about him, and I suspect there are plenty of other people on this board who are in a similar boat. Hell, as a kid my favourite player was Rowan Warfe because he had a similar name to a Star Trek character I liked.

I am however much more confident about my knowledge of players drafted 2000 and later.

Ah, a youngling.

I mean Ben Hart, superstar defender of the Crows flag teams in the '90s. He played on talls and smalls, elite rebounder.

I think you underestimate how old a lot of people on here are, that at the very least were immersed in '90s football growing up, with players whose careers then extended into the 2000's. Even if memories are a bit foggy. I'm a footy nerd so still watch/rewatch stuff from that era in the background from time to time.

For me growing up in NSW (born 88) I followed the occasional Swans game in the late 90's but it wasn't until around 2000 I started watching every Swans game and it wasn't until around 2003 that I started watching a significant portion of other games during the round. Means other than the greats of the 90's my knowledge of the players who played back then is fairly limited.

I distinctly remember the first game I ever went to was a North Melbourne home game at the SCG when my dad got free tickets somewhere.

It was impossible to get away from in Victoria and then anyone with a FoxFooty subscription would get flooded with stuff from that era thereafter. But of course, people no matter the age or location won't have seen as much from an era where less was televised. A game or two on the weekend (e.g Friday Night Footy), then snippets from the highlight show made up the majority of "knowledge" for games you couldn't attend. Then of course the finals, most of which are still available along with some other random games.

But it wouldn't be like we are drafting Coventry and Dier. There's enough to go off and in a lot of cases these '90s drafted players were playing excellent football in the 2000's (think about how many guns were drafted '94 through '99).

The okay ones from the 90s is probably where I still struggle despite watching footy back then. It gets harder to remember "non stars" outside of your own club from that far back. We had Mansfield and Sanderson, Sholl and McGrath - although he still played on the big boys.

Hunt, Wojo, Milburn, Tuohy all decent to very good from more recent years.

Reducing to "just okay" is hard, but a bunch of good to ultra elite half backs/back pockets over the years: McLeod, C.Johnson, Smart, Pickett, Peckett, Sexton, Bowden, Birchall, the Scott's, Darrell White, Heuskes, Montgomery, S.Burgoyne, Malcheski, Barry, Wirrpunda, Fisher, Murphy, Wellman, Archer, Gilbee, C.Brown, Clement, N.Smith, Shaw, M.Johnson, McVeigh, Docherty, Laird, Whitfield, Ryan, Rich, Saad, Sinclair, Houston, Blakey.
