So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

Do we really want people to struggle too much, given the pace this one has crawled to in trying to get to the end of round 3? :p

It's clearly not a struggle to select good players that is slowing this down. There are heaps of Brownlow winners and multiple All Australians unselected at the moment.

Rutten and Talia were both very good KPD's too.

Gibson has been on my radar. St Kilda's defence is probably their strongest point already, but he'd still be an upgrade as an intercepting/rebounding machine who can play tall or small.

Sorry for the delay everyone. Had to head back to bed this morning after vomiting. Fun day!

After filling key gaps with an imposing ruckman and an opportunist up in the forward 50, the Blues have turned to its back six in the third round. In somewhat of a smokey, Carlton have opted for an awkward but an utterly unique player. Someone who can help out Weitering to repel opposition advances, but even more importantly, can break the lines on the rebound and get the ball as quickly as possible down to McKay and Curnow. With their hearts in their mouths, Blues fans will have a new cult hero for the next decade plus, flush with All Australian guernseys (I might be getting a little carried away now). I'm of course talking about the mullet-wearing, no-shouldered, absolute goodwill that is The Lizard.

<insert poor attempt at using MS Paint to put Nick Blakey in a Carlton guernsey here>

Pick #53 - Carlton Blues - Nick Blakey

You're next, theasian.

Blakey is a great choice, they have a need for speed and that will suit Curnow/McKay's service (with Milne crumbing) brilliantly. As well as giving them another player who is strong defensively.

Still, their forward line remains a Robbie Gray, Paul Chapman or Le Cras short to me (excluding Betts for it being too samey as their previous team).

Sshhhh ... ut up!!!

For me, this has been great fun but a little depressing.

We (WCE) have so many needs/deficiencies that I will add 4 genuine Superstars and the team still isn't complete.

Without being silly, I need at least 7 to cover our glaring needs let alone any icing players.

I'll have full reasoning for each pick, after the draft is complete. I've had to think laterally a bit and almost get two for one players, just to help cover all needs.

I love how Carlton's defence is absolute dogshit outside of Weitering and Saad (note: Newman is excellent offensively but horrible defensively) and the only defender they've picked is an unaccountable medium defender.

In the sense that he intercepts and repels, is Blakey bad defensively? It's the whole offence is your best form of defence angle. I still think Gibson or Rutten/Talia would've been a wiser choice, but I'm all for maverick picks.

Blakey is terrible defensively. You still need players that can effectively lock down to allow the Blakey, Ridley, Stewart types to do what they do.

I know they're somewhat maligned on the Cats board but guys like Kolodjasnij and O'Connor allow Stewart and Holmes free reign, same with guys like Laverde and Kelly for us or McCartin and Fox for the Swans.

Carlton's defensive balance is out of whack. They don't need maverick types. They need lock down defenders.

I'm not complaining though.

Yeah, I can't argue with that, although I admit I haven't found Blakey as extraordinarily bad defensively as you. But you're right that you can't have a defence full of Blakey's.

Who would you have picked for them (all three picks) so far, out of interest?

I'd have gone Pendles, then Stevie J, then Rutten/Vlastuin

Or Hodge, then Stevie J, then Gray.

I'll set some ground rules including reasonable time limits and the recommendation to pass through a list of options if you know you will be away. If the time limit elapses, I will recommend that a default pick is assigned. My thought is that this default pick will be the next highest unselected player in terms of total Brownlow votes.

I know some would like to 'punish' someone who takes too long with a crap player but this will only lead to further disengagement if people end up with Barnaby French instead of Josh Kennedy.

If someone is repeatedly missing a (reasonably set) deadline (say 3 times) then we can look to replace them with someone that wants to be engaged.
In the past draft and trade games we've done on this site we've usually set a time limit of about 12 hours. Gives everyone a chance to check at some stage in the day in no matter whether in the east or west or overseas.

Repeated misses means finding a replacement

He's terrible. But that's the same with a lot of those types. That's why you have proper lock down defenders there as well.

Harry Taylor first pick. Best key defender on the board. Probably Andrew Mackie second, who is a lot more balanced than Blakey and a forward who's still on the board for the third that I'm hoping slips to me.

To be fair, he didn’t get to take his first pick and might not have gone with a ruck in Sandilands! Second pick of a small fwd in Milne is fair too I think.

Don't mind the small forward, just wouldn't be what I'd use it on.
