So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

With pick 54 Sydney select Sam Mitchell.

Can't believe the luck that he has fallen this far.

Him feeding Warner and Heeney with Rowbottom rotating through as the defensive mid, Mills as a two way running inside/outside mid , Parker/Adams rotating through as inside bulls/high HF, with Gulden and J Mac on the wings makes the MF a force to be reckoned with

Oh wow, what an oversight! For some reason I thought Mitchell was drafted '99, but I was off by 2 years. He should've been picked up ages ago, I wouldn't have even minded taking him instead of Swan to join Dangerfield!

That's the value pick so far for sure, and makes me question whether I needed to take 2 midfielders with my first 2 picks.

Yeah, was amazed that you picked two minds of similar ilk while overlooking Sammy.
Him feeding either Danger or Swan would have been ideal.

In reality that was an oversight only from not realising he was eligible, sadly. He has something like the 2nd or 3rd most coaches votes of all time - great leader, tough as nails, elite skills/decision maker.

We have to hope Steele can feed the bazooka and the cannon for a few years at least. With a strong defence behind them and Greene leading the forward line, I still think Dangerswan can do some serious damage.

Daaamn!

Mitchell was the one I was referencing (multiple times when I said there was a player I rate top 10 of the 21st century who hasn't been taken yet) and when I said last pick that if not for a dire need for a key defender, I'd have picked up already!

Genuinely shocked he has fallen this far

I even dug up an article from 2017 where a bunch of 'experts' rated their top 25 players of the last 50 years and Mitchell made that list - just to show how strange it was he hadn't been picked up (but was waiting to see if I could get him first). Top 3 all time for Brownlow votes and one of the best finals players of all time not even getting selected top 50 (even behind Coughlan, Montagna, Mackie, etc) is a funny one.

Anyway, was going to make a joke at my pick about how the current Hawthorn coach's favourite player hadn't been drafted and got on the phone to the list managers to make sure we picked him up ;) but not to be.

If it's an consolation, I was going to take him too mate.

I've checked the list of picks so many times because I can't believe this guy is still available

Pick 56 - Richmond - Jimmy Bartel

Bartel will start his career on the wing before taking his Brownlow winning skills into the centre square in a few years time. Thrilled to have him at the Tigers. Handy quartet of Ablett, Cameron, NicNat and Bartel added to the club 😍

Great choice - you even reunited him with Ablett! - and another one who it was baffling he slipped (albeit not as baffling as Mitchell). I hoped to pick him up this round but feared this would happen.

Jimmy was one of the best finals players this century, elite for (undersized) third tall forward cameos or off a forward flank as a creator, then a jet midfielder full of class and skill - but still damn tough as well.

Bartel's poise would've suited my Dangerswan midfield perfectly, but it wasn't to be...

Lenny Hayes must still have nightmares about Bartel not giving him an inch of space after the first quarter of that 2009 Grand Final...

I'm still at work.

I need a beast inside mid.
A few obvious ones. Leaning towards Cripps (now kicks goals) but want to check a few stats later.

Kennedy, Priddis, even Mundy 🤔
Montagna.

No wait.....

How about Brad Sewell Steel Sidebottom, Luke Ball,

oh I forgot Jason por_please_ya

All I know is nobody steal my prodigy small forward

I'd be shocked if you didn't take Kennedy and didn't consider it somewhat of a no brainer.

More finals proven than Cripps (unbelievable even when his team mates faltered in the '16 GF etc).
