30 man preliminary World Cup squad

i'm suprised that they didn' find a place for Chris Rogers from WA, and Michael Klinger from Victoria.

They're both young top order players in good form (especially Klinger) and i'm not sure what more they could've done to get in the top 30...
Maybe Chris Rogers could have actually scored some runs in ODDs.

That might have helped.

I know it sounds zany.

What are they thinking?
You havent watched much of those 4 this year have you? All have improved and all are deserving of their spot in the 30, well only just but come on....

Surprised after one average part of the List A season, Jaques is starting to be overlooked. I hope he gets a game, we saw his 94 on debut, he can play but the selectors have seemed to lose their love of him and if Katich gets chosen before anyone else in the 30 I will probably go nuts, look the guy does his bit and can bat that's for sure but he is not an opening batter in one dayers especially if we are looking to blood youngsters. Surprised that Rogers got overlooked as well as Klinger and even Thornley seeing the selectors love affair with all rounders. Dave Hussey I thought might have got a call up but happy the bottom 5 all call ups, hopefully two of them will get selected in the Commonwealth and if they play well enough a couple for the World Cup

I think Rogers being over looked is probably fair enough in the 50 over format

List A: 64 Innings, 1808 runs @ 31.17

However, his first class record is absolutley suberb, 7,159 runs @ 50.06. Including 56 and 219 for Leicestershire against Australia.

we only need 1 keeper in the final 15 man squad.

the format is now different than previous world cups and if gilly was going to rest, it'd be one of the first 2 matches against the minnows.

as for the 30 man squad. it's a joke really. players can still be picked for the world cup outside the 30 man squad which imo defeats the purpose of picking a preliminary squad.

i know dizzy hasn't played a odi since england 2005, but was the 201 in the test arena his goodbye ??

FWIW, I'm glad they've given Hilfenhous a go, he's really earned it.

yeah i reckon its great theyve rewarded hilf in the squad and the 20/20, without a shadow of a doubt he is the best bowler outside the current test 11 bowlers (clark lee mcgrath) atm, he is bowling bettr than wat tait or johnson ever have so far in their careers..

Did you watch Pura Cup cricket in 2004?

Would that be possible? Would we have to replace Gilly if he was only expected to miss say... 2 matches?

Haddin will go for that very reason, if Haddin is called up as a replacement, Gilchrist cannot come back later in the tournament, plus he has already proven that he is an accomplished finisher in the dying overs at international level while a lot of the challengers are top order batsman.

The Australian selectors generally pick bowler heavy squads, i.e. to South Africa where they didn't even bother with a reserve batsman and Jaques had to be rushed over when injuries hit.

Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting, Hussey, Symonds, Clarke, Watson/White, Hogg, Lee, Bracken, McGrath (Haddin, Johnson, Clark, Reserve batsman/White).

That covers all bases for mine.

Haddin must go.It would take the best part of 2 days from go to whoa to get to the Carribean. He'd clear customs and go straight to the ground for possibly a crunch game. Good luck if Gilly gets food poison on match eve. Hussey keeping to Hogg might set a world record for byes.

Hayden and White are subject to CommBank form
Was touch and go between Voges and Clark for the 15th spot, would pick both if Watson isn't fit.
I think Harwood is too injury prone to be considered.

Good post. However, Symonds should be classified as "bat/spin". That's one less batting option than previous WC squads too. I'd dump Cullen and bring in Haddin.

Or how about 'bat/pace?'

His "medium pacers" are pretty quick.

He is pretty versatile this man, might just have to create a bat/pace/spin category for him.

Hilfenhaus will be the bolter- if he has a good next couple of months, he could overtake Tait, Johnson etc

Yeah Symonds is a difficult one to classify, guess what I am trying to stay is that I consider White and to a lesser extent Voges to be similar players to Symonds at the last WC. Project batsman, good fielders, those bowling is more of a bonus.

I don't rate Haddin as a batsman, think there are better batting options in the squad...Voges, Birt, Jaques.

Good point regarding Cullen, however recent tradition suggests that players are brought into the test team via ODI. I have a feeling that MacGill will be over looked and that the selectors will use this as an opportunity to see if Cullen can hack it at international level.

2003 squad had 2 spinners and 3 part timers, if anything I have one too many quicks, McGrath, Watson, Symonds, Clark are all stump to stump medium pace.
