Player Watch #44 Seth Campbell Re-Signed 2026

It was great to see Seth getting a shot up on the wing at times yesterday. His ability to gather the ball with 1 grab and then use it well can only help improve our ball use coming into our forward half.

He must have a massive tank. Still running on top of the ground and sprinting to contests and presenting deep into the 4th quarter. What a gem.

He could've had a much bigger game yesterday. One shot hit the post and another shot he sprayed. Also fumbled a couple times trying to spend the ball before he got it. A bit more experience and that's a 20 touch, 2 or 3 goal game.

He should play every game this year.

Covered 14.4km yesterday

Hoping for a Rising Star nomination for him this week. Didn't have much of the ball but his influence on the game was fantastic.

That's AA territory for a HF

Would be nice but doubt it will be this week

Early in the year it’s all about names and stats and unfortunately Campbell doesn’t tick those boxes despite his massive influence on the game

RICHMOND rookie Seth Campbell will trigger a contract extension after the Tigers' early-season bye.

The 19-year-old was limited to just five VFL games in his first season at Punt Road due to injury and only secured an extension in September.

But after a strong pre-season, new Richmond coach Adem Yze rewarded him with a debut and has played the Tasmanian across the first six games of the 2024 season.

Campbell kicked two games against Gold Coast in Opening Round and has shown he can handle the intensity at AFL level since then, rewarding the club’s faith in him last year.

Richmond is expected to rework an extension in the coming weeks for Campbell and reward the small forward with a two-year deal.

Tigers GMs Blair Hartley and Tim Livingstone have a number of list management decisions to make this year on a wide range of premiership players.

Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia, Dylan Grimes, Toby Nankervis, Kamdyn McIntosh and Jack Graham are all out of contract.

Unlike the names above, Liam Baker is not a free agent but is out of contract and is weighing up his future.

While those decisions will take time, Campbell's early-season rise has taken care of one piece of list management for Richmond.

Nah Seth is the one player you've got a good chance of retaining. From the NW coast so Hobart is more of a hike than flying from Melbourne, complicated personal life. Him and his partner might be very happy to remain in Melbourne. Up to Richmond to build that life for him.
In a recent interview he was very bullish about living the life in melb CBD , I got the impression he could be a long termer at punt rd

How many goals has he actually kicked? 2 in the first game and how many since?

SethCam has 3 goal 4 assists in his 6 matches. Probably more importantly given he is getting a lot of his touches away from goals is 3.5 score involvement average. He is averaging 5 contested possessions which is healthy enough for his role. And 2.3 tackles which is ok.

We have to remember this kid has only just turned 19.

The main thing that I think is very obviously going to improve is as he matures and gains experience, and his decision making and execution both see the improvement you would expect, his possessions may stay similar or rise slightly, but the score involvements will increase substantially. He will get that up to 5.5 or higher. He is already winning enough ball for that to be the case if he was given say the average decision making and disposal execution skills of a mature small forward. Of course in Richmond's strongest forward line his score involvements would be higher anyway simply due to better players being on the other end of his disposals.

If he stays fit there is so much to look forward to with this kid as he develops his game. He could easily hit the wall at some point this year but let's see how he gets on.

I got a bit excited after his beautiful pickup on the run in the last quarter against Sydney - has not done much in the two games since. I think he’ll be decent for us though, is still a kid very early on in his career

Yeah I think due to our recent success a lot of us have forgotten what it’s like to watch a developing side especially with a lot of kids
form and development will fluctuate pretty dramatically at times but it’s just part of the development process

Instead of looking at whole games it’s about looking at moments and patches of games and watching that continuity build over time

Apologies if this is a silly question but, that being the case, why does anyone turn up for training?
Composure is one of those things that can only be gained by exposure therapy. You need to be put into those high stake moments consistently to be able to gain comfort. Simulations are somewhat ineffective so training for it you hit diminishing returns rather quickly.

For cleanliness, I am not sure why it doesn't appear trainable. To turn the question around, with all the players training so much, why are they not all clean with ball in hand?
