The game is an undeniably quicker one these days, he did what used to take three hours to do in one and a bit and has provided a good platform. It's what you ask for from an opener.

The best sides have a top 4 that bat long once they get a start (ie get to 20-30). If the task was to bash it around for an hour or two and then get out (and look good style wise) then guys like Crawley or duckett would be elite. They aren't.

Again I'm not saying the kid has no talent he obviously has good hand eye co ordination. I'm saying he hasnt learnt how to build an innings yet or play tactically and if he doesn't he will be a flash in the pan that plays 10-20 tests but never goes anywhere. With our lack of nous on the coaching staff I'm not confident of that.

He's 19. He will learn which shots to play and when.
