Isaac Heeney

Isaac Heeney is a crowd favourite and one of the best young players in the competition. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in two of his eligible four years and played his 100th senior game in 2019. Heeney can be used in the midfield, forward line – where he booted four goals in star teammate Lance Franklin’s absence in Round 20 last year – or as a loose man in defence.

Isaac Heeney
DOB: 05 May 1996
DEBUT: 2015
DRAFT: #18, 2014 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Cardiff (NSW)

Kids a star.... but Eddie had already told us that

Didn't see the weekend game but looked good at Drummoyne. AFL size and looks like a pretty good kick. The bit I liked best was when there was a bit of positioning/shoving going on off the ball in the pocket and he immediately gave back what came his way and then wrestled his way to front posi... even though the ball was at least one kick away from him.

Seriously impressed

Didn't get to watch the full NAB games but watched the highlights - he is in about 50% of them. This pleased me.

Is there any room left on this wagon??

For all of Eddies ranting and raving he hasn't stopped us from getting Heeney and he won't stop us from getting Mills, it would be the icing on the cake if the Pies finished in the bottom 4 this year, put a bid in for Mills and he came to us with pick 18.

after giving away the farm..

Unless the club doesn't give a shit about family and history, we should prioritise getting Dunkley. Would be absolutely fantastic to see him playing for the Swans! If we can get both, even better, but if Dunkley wants to play for us and we discard him it will be extremely disappointing. He's a consensus top 10 pick at the moment, every other club would be happy to have that opportunity.

Yeah but if it's between mills and dunks I know who I'd prefer..

with the points system and the trade restriction, we would probably need to trade a/some top end talent to stay current or hope to hell our rookies keep coming on.

I really wish Roos didn't do that as it has given so much ammunition to the likes of Eddie. Sounds so much better for Eddie's case saying he was a pick 2 player and we got him at pick 18 than if he was a pick 4 or 5 player.

You wonder where he really would have gone in a clear draft. Maybe 2 was the spot. I realise it always depends to some degree on the needs of the team with the selection but he certainly looks like a prime mover with the right body type and the correct amount of mongrel to play the game. I wouldn't be disappointed on what I have seen over the 3 NAB games if we had spent pick 2 on him regardless - early days for sure but the draft is still a best guess situation.

You are correct though - the pick 2 was always a freebie from Roos as he always coming to us via 18 anyway.

If the draft was "live", Melbourne wouldn't have taken Heeney at picks 2 or 3 ahead of equally talented local midfielders in Petracca and Brayshaw.

GWS would have bid on Heeney with pick 4. Would have been much better if that had happened because as pointed out, Eddie's rants wouldn't look quite so cutting if Heeney was a pick 4for pick 18 rather than a pick 2 for pick 18.

Reckon we sell the farm for Mills and Dunkley, gives us a serious and overflowing midfield for a decade more and a really good midfield will paper over other deficiencies.
