Bugger El Zorro
Someone needs to recruit that Costa Rican commentator.
If its the same same guy that does Hernandez's other goals, he is sensational.
I love the way he elongates every word he says after a goal.
GGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL SPECTACULARRRRRRRRRRRRRR

A-League champion Melbourne Victory look set to sign one of Australia's most promising talents from one of Europe's biggest clubs on a loan deal.

Teenage midfielder Kaz Patafta, who has spent the past 18 months at Portuguese giant Benfica, is expected to head back to Australia to join Victory for the upcoming season.

Patafta, 18, captained Australia's under-17 side at the 2005 world championships and was a training partner with Australia's World Cup squad last year.

Victory declined to comment on whether the club had signed Patafta.

But Portuguese newspaper Record and Portuguese television today quoted Benfica as saying it had agreed a €50,000 ($75,000) loan deal with Victory for Patafta.

A diminutive attacking midfielder who stands around 170cm, Patafta would add to the Victory's impressive list of off-season signings including Costa Rica international Carlos Hernandez and Socceroos centre-back Ljubo Milicevic.

Originally from Canberra, Patafta is an Australian Institute of Sport graduate but was overlooked by A-League clubs in the lead-up to the first season of the competition.

Instead he ended up securing a dream move to Benfica, playing mainly youth team football this season for a club which took part in the European Champions League and finished third in the Portuguese Liga.

Patafta first came to prominence when he caught the eye of then-Socceroos coach Guus Hiddink with his national under-17 team performances.

Hiddink selected him as a training partner for the senior side ahead of both the World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in late 2005, and in both Holland and Germany ahead of last year's World Cup finals.

So impressed was Hiddink that the youngster was linked with a move to Hiddink's Dutch club PSV Eindhoven before the coach quit to take up full-time coaching duties with Russia.

Victory is expected to enter the A-League season with a 21-man roster, leaving them just three more vacancies in its squad.

Victory coach Ernie Merrick has confirmed the club wants an experienced back-up striker to cover for Socceroos Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp, as well as two more younger players to round out the squad.

Wonderful. :thumbsu:

I think this guy is going to be a superstar so this deal means either overseas leagues are taking notice of us as a great place to develop youngsters or hes not quite as good as I thought. Hopefully its the former and even though he will be in a Victory shirt Ill be watching his form closely

I wouldn't be surprised if, like Sarkies, he only plays limited minutes during the season. He's only on loan, meaning we have no real obligation to play him ahead of the players on our books.

Nonetheless, another encouraging signing for the Victory, and I'm sure that he will show us what he can do in the time that he gets. Who knows, he might tear it up and prove me wrong! :p:D

Whoever is tracking these players down deserves a pay-rise too (whether its Merrick, Lord, Ising etc.), extremely shrewd signings so far. Thinking outside the square too with these loan deals. Who's to say that even someone like Spiranovic isn't available for loan whilst he tries to break in to the Nurnberg team? Or even someone like Troisi?

I think Glory will be left behind next season. There has been some quality signings for the other A League sides and i think we are missing out on some big name players. Cmon lads get it together!

For one I think Patafta is horribly overhyped on the back of a couple of decent u-17 WC games - he looked bog ordinary from what I saw from him with the young socceroos in the Asian qualifiers. Burns, Djite, Vidosic, even Grossman looked much more accomplished players at that level.

Secondly, that will be spot on. Playing youth and reserve football in Portugal, even if it is not at a great standard, would be better than bench warming and playing the odd 10-15 minutes as a sub for the Victory. If he comes back to Australia he should go to a club where he will get gametime, otherwise why bother? Decent squad signing for the Victory but a big step backwards in Patafta's development unless the Costa Rican bloke goes down with a long term injury.

Patafta to Victory?

Rumours are rife. Would be great for Victory but wouldnt it be best for him to keep playing in youth ranks? He at least will get a pretty much certain game there

Victory signs Patafta

June 20, 2007
MELBOURNE Victory has revealed the deal which brought one of Australia's brightest soccer talents to the A-League champions was brokered right under the noses of arch-rivals Sydney FC.
Former Australian under-17 captain Kaz Patafta will join Victory on a year-long loan from Portuguese giants Benfica, with the paperwork completed today.
Victory coach Ernie Merrick was alerted to Patafta's availability thanks to a chance meeting with the 18-year-old's girlfriend while watching one of Sydney FC's Asian Champions League games at Aussie Stadium in March.
"I went and got my ticket and sat down at the game, and I sat next to this very attractive young girl and her parents," Merrick told AAP.
"We got chatting and this young girl - it turns out she's Kaz's girlfriend and now his agent.
"We started talking about Kaz and how he was looking for a change and a loan for a year.
"His club (Benfica) wanted to loan him to another Portuguese club but she said he'd much prefer to come to Australia and Melbourne Victory was a good team.
"That's where it went from."
After the group watched Sydney FC draw 2-2 with Urawa Red Diamonds, Merrick spoke to Patafta in Portugal later that night.
Patafta expressed a keen interest in a loan move to the club, before Victory football manager Gary Cole took over the negotiations with Benfica.
The coincidence of Victory being tipped off about Patafta's availability while at a Sydney FC game has not been lost on anyone involved.
Patafta is originally from Canberra, where Sydney FC play one pre-season match a year.
As the A-League's first season was kicking off nearly two years ago, Patafta secured a dream move to regular European Champions League participants Benfica, playing mainly youth team football last season.
So impressed was former national coach Guus Hiddink with Patafta that he was added to the Socceroos' travelling party as a training partner ahead of last year's World Cup finals.
A diminutive attacking midfield player who stands around 170cm, Patafta looms as a serious first-team contender to add to growing competition for starting places at Victory.
"Kaz ticks all the boxes, 18 years old, tremendous experience behind him," Merrick said.
"He brings to our side youthful exuberance and tremendous attacking flair for a midfielder, and he could be a goal scorer as well."
Patafta arrives in Melbourne next week, and is likely to immediately jet off with Victory for its pre-season tour of China next month.
His signing leaves Melbourne keen to add just two more players to round off a 21-man squad.

Victory will go through the season undefeated at this stage. SO much better its not funny. Comes down to a good coach really.

Perth Glory will win the spoon. Rabble nowadays. Newcastle, Adelaide, Sydney will make up the numbers. Im afraid the A-League is turning into a EPL style dominance even with the salary cap

Loans are ingenious with a salary cap. Get the other team to pay the salary and you are sweet

Yeah smart recruiting by the Victory and they do look VERY hard to beat. Just reading peoples thoughts on the Patafta loan, it does seem like a weird move for the kid, I mean he will be fighting with Zorro for a spot and you wouldnt think unless he gets injured that Kaz would see much game time. I mean he probably wouldnt get much time at any of Sydney, Adelaide or the Victory so perhaps another team would have been wiser ??

I think MV squad looks better this season than last but I think most squads look better too.
I highly doubt MV will go through the season undefeated. There are a lot of variables in a season.
Its a long bow to compare it to EPL so early, we are starting only the 3rd season. No proof yet that only a few sides will dominate. To me at the moment it just shows that Melbourne Victory is probably the best administered club and that the Melbourne public loves the game more than the other cities.

It would be interesting to know if there are any rules in place to prevent a club from paying hundreds of thousands to another club to loan a player whilst the original club continues to pay his wages.

We're looking very strong, but it's far too early to declare the league done and dusted. I've no doubt there will be some big signings made by other clubs in the next month or so, especially Sydney, Newcastle, Queensland and Perth. Don't discount the quality of the signings Adelaide and Central Coast have made, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the names in the Wellington team.

As for Patafta, he may become very valuable if we lose one of our strikers to injury or international duty, as we may be able to accommodate both he and Hernandez in the eleven.

Perth and Queensland will battle it out for the spoon. Between Newcastle, Central Coast and Wellington for the 4th spot in the finals. I think Newcastle will struggle a little minus Carle & co. Sounds great signing a heap of south americans but how are they going to click. Victory had a 33% strike rate with theirs and the system they played was tailor made for Fred.
