A.Swallow - the next Lenny Hayes?

Lenny Hayes, unlike Andrew Swallow, actually performed against tough opposition, I'd love to see Swallow's stats against Collingwood and Geelong
Swallow: 94 games, 18.2 disposals, 6.2 tackles, 0.56 goals

Over 30 disposals: 7 times

Hayes: 94 games, 18.2 disposals, 3.3 tackles, 0.42 goals

Over 30 disposals: 5 times

Lenny Hayes has never had a 40 disposal match in 241 games.

There's bugger all between them.

Gee quick to jump up and down after one stand out performance .... got to string a few together on a consistent basis before we compare these young blokes to the next superstar of the comp. He has had some ordinary games this year also. Consistency is the key and doing it against quality opposition is even more important.

To be fair, Andrew Swallow has been doing this for a couple of years now. Hasn't missed a game since the start of 2009, and has averaged 21 disposals, 7 tackles and 5 clearances per game in the 54 games he's played in that time.

One game and they are back in force. It's like the pre-season all over again.

They probably do need to see AMA. Gone a bit early.

Hard not to though, as a North supporter. We've all seen small glimpses over the past two years but because of injuries are best midfield going forward simply hasnt been able to play together.

Think Bastinac and Ziebell have played two games with each other.

Taking nothing away from Swallow as I think his been probably a little more effective than Hayes at the same age, but these are stats taken from early 2000's compared to late 2000's. With the increasingly high rate of possession football and pressure, you take these stats with a grain of salt.

Fair argument that neither of those two players could be described as playing posession football though.

Very true, which is why there disposals are exactly the same on average, but when you compare tackles it's a lot easier to get them nowadays than it was.

Swallow is a tackle machine though, but Lenny Hayes' stats just don't do him justice.

Not too fussy, it's obviously a reasonable compliment to be compared to Hayes. I would suggest that when Swallow retires in 10 years it looks like he'll have a similar reputation (except for the premierships obviously). :thumbsu:

I dunno about that mate, and I am not prepared to state that Spitta was BETTER at the same point, and he still has a way to go to accomplish Lenny Hayes's feats, but Spittas possessions are overwhelmingly contested possessions, so I wouldn't be seperating the pair too much on that count.

lenny hayes has easily been my favourite player from an opposition club. the fact that swallow is now being compared to him sends chills down my spine!

Completely agree, has all the tough attributes Lenny has, but also has probably better foot skills and is a great kick for goal.

On track for his first appearance of many to come in the AA 22.

as long as he turns out to be a better person.

it's funny, because I swear footballers are meant to be judged on their talent at football.

Carey was probably the shittest bloke ever to take the field, but he was an undeniable gun. That is all that needs to be said.

I'm sure you are a brilliant bloke yourself anyway. Why judge Westy?

Lenny is also 7 years older than Swallow and has played about 150 games extra. When you compare the stats at the same age Spitz is ahead of where Lenny was at the same age.

I don't claim he will have the same kind of career, but as our mids mature and he gets more support I would expect him to be a pretty good player for some time to come.

Alright maybe I was being a bit harsh on Swallow, seems he has been very consistent over the last 3 or so years, if he continues to play like he did to today I can definitely understand the comparison.

Similar type of game. Big shoes to fill though.
Already been damn good for longer than some people want to recognise.
Thing about Hayes though is he's a big game player. tougher the opposition, bigger the game the better he gets. No reason to think Swallow cant be just as good, takes a few yrs to get that consistency and against better opposition. Hard not to think of Hayes in past tense right now

I hate how these threads start of innocently enough giving one of our players a bit of credit, and then descend into tit for tats about lists, personalities, what we will be compared with what you will be, "please rate us" howls, etc etc.

Andrew Swallow played a great game, thanks for noticing everyone, we noticed too, and some of us appreciate you mentioning it.

Maybe AA starting 22, maybe not. Who cares really. Great clubman either way and if he slips under ther radar, even better.

Have a great day, peace, etc.

Gus is just mad because he is still spewing that Swallow went to our club and not to his for that trade! :thumbsu:

Yep, good post. It's a shame how these threads turn out.

As for the comparison - not a bad one. I think Lenny Hayes is one of everyone's favourite players. He's been a champion for so long and steps up in the big moments. Hayes has that beautiful side step I always love to see.

I think Swallow tackles more and is probably more damaging in terms of goals and goal assists. I often see him described as slow, and it always surprises me because he has a really nice burst of acceleration out of the packs.

He has to have plenty more years like the last few if he's going to reach Lenny's status. But I am a bit shocked to see a lot of people acting like this is the only good game he's played recently.

As Cometti was saying yesterday if he played for one of the big 4 clubs he would be a much more highly regarded player by now and be considered elite.
He is argubly the best clearance player in the comp and his disposal is elite around the packs. Could work on a few aspects of his game such as going forward and taking contested marks but hopefully that will come with time.
