Autopsy A win for the true believers - swans down pies

Watching the last two minutes alone a lot could have gone wrong but somehow didn’t:

  • McCreery free run a stoppage, great tackle Warner
  • Few plays later, Parker letting Jaicos run through the stoppage unchecked
  • The McStay non 50
  • In the next marking contest, Cunningham manhandles Pendlebury - have seen them paid
  • Boundary throw in deep in our D50. Not sure why Grundy was so far away but he fails to nominate. Cox could take the ball from ruck, could tap to a Pie uncontested, instead hits it to Blakey
  • Blakey under great closing pressure from McCreery scrambles a kick away. Moore slips a little costing him a chance to mark 40m out
Mills fending off 2 Pies and almost getting pinged on the 50 right in front.

You are mostly right on all of that but then if we do this with the other tight games we lost you can make the alternative list and why we should have got Brisbane, Fremantle , Stkilda

I'm actually struggling to recall Melican having any poor games. Sure, there've been contests where he's been beaten, but he's been steady and reliable. His 'crime' is getting injured.

I agree, though, that right now our defense is a mess. Lots of players getting to the same spot, all flying up in contest, all spoiling, even when a mark might be possible. Just down on individual and collective confidence and organisation.

we have a fundamental problem which is that we cant really defend effectively one on one. at least not when we play against seriously big forwards (a la lynch, daniher, curnow and mckay, naughton juhand last week dixon, georgiades). so we have to both win the midfield battle and we also ask blakey to fly third man up. which he does pretty well but when teams go through his man we have real problems because he sags off and then cant get to the contest anyway.

the whole organisation is based on having someone leave their man to spoil. unless there is pressure on the ball or slow plays we are in trouble

I agree 100%. I'm having a bit of fun with those who suggested he should be out of the side due to his pace.
I don't know how to debate with people who think we are a better team with Sam Wicks in it, than Luke Parker. It's like having a mathematical discussion with someone who thinks 2+2=5.

The guy is just a competitive dog and until his body breaks down and can't run anymore, he should be in the starting 18. I don't care where they play him. They could play him in the back pocket and he would still be a good player.

Him, Heeney in the last were immense Roberts I had best on for 3/4
Fair shout out to Roberts - he dipped in form got some time to get it sorted and his last few weeks has been a shining light in a world of poo.

I know we were trounced but he was close to the only one mentioning last week backed it up last night with 25 possessions

His body needs a week off.

I thought his last quarter was good , but yeah he should take a game off. If we beat Essendon he certainly shouldn't play against Adelaide imo

Rowy, Roberts, Parker etc kept us in the game for long enough so that Warner and Heeney's last quarter or so could get us over the top. Jordon was better too.

Fair call on Rowy watched the replay thought he tapered off in the second half but looked heaps better at the ground. Forgot JJ who gave Daicos a bath again

If Dons get up over Suns, they might leave Wright out again. So Ladhams/McLean vs Draper/Bryan. Not the worst.

I’ve felt this for a while but the last 3 weeks have been proof that Melican is now our best KPD. He competes well 1-1, reads the ball exceptionally well and uses the ball better than any of our defenders barring Blakey when he is on. He looks ungainly which is one of the reason that some on here think he is just ok. His kicking style is hardly graceful but he generally takes the right option. Probably an unpopular opinion!

JJ was absolutely spent at the end of that game. Guy gives EVERYthing he has out on the field.
Very happy we got that guy to our club.

Wait. So, you are telling me that Collingwood are actually SHIT if they are given a fair draw away from the MCG?

Who would have thought that playing at home for 60% of your games to date would be an advantage. And that's not counting the games they played at Marvel.
And the home games Geelong have to have against them at the MCG!

Ladhams can do what Grundy currently operating at 75% can IMO.
Not that Horse is going to rotate a player that needs a week off so he gets his body right for finals.
Never has, never will IMO. It will continue to cost us.

Blakey and Florent had iffy moments but thought they took a lot from the game .

Blakey just needs to tidy up his one on one work, or we need to keep him from having to do it at all.

Florents season was summed up in one play in the fourth and awesome run and bounce around a few then kicked into the man on the mark.

I’m actually surprised there’s not a bit more JJ love on the POTY thread.

I thought he did a good job on the Daicos boys. Didn’t nullify them completely, but certainly dulled their impact.

Credit to Horse also for reverting back to the hard run-with role. I thought JJ was far less effective on the wing …. much more impact with the quasi-tag.

On a positive note McDonald actually took some marks tonight - which is more than he's done in the forward line all year. So I disagree with everyone on here blasting Horse for playing him back. I think it might be good for his development to remember what taking a contested mark feels like. Was definitely a good move to bring him forward in the last though, will give you that.
Agreed. Also what’s the counter factual? Having Hamling play, who by all accounts is not up to it? Or a recent draftee who is not setting the world alight in the reserves?

I’m sure Horse did not want to play Logan in the backline but we need to consider what choices he had.

Also, count me down as backman-curious for Logan long term. I think we should persist with him as a forward for now but I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a swingman extraordinaire that can also play on the wing and even through the middle.

Edit: original post said that Horse wanted to play Logan back, now updated to say he did not want to have to play him back

This was really rammed home when a contributor posted last night that his grandmother died but he was mainly feeling down because the Swans got thrashed in a football game last week. I found that oddly disturbing and simply can’t relate to that level of obsession. It is only a game ffs.
Maybe best to not speak about other people's grieving. You don't know the context and why they may not have picked the perfect words in your opinion.

Yep. Can never stop them just limit their effectiveness. come finals we’ll need him to play this role effectively against the other guns - Neale, Bont etc he should do the same next week v Merritt
