You reckon that Saad will choose North over us when it's reportedly between our two clubs?

If you don't pony up I reckon he'd re-sign with us.
North have the coin to match any offer and would snap him up at pick 2 in the PSD. You'd assume Adelaide could do the same.

He either re-signs or is traded to Carlton. No point shunting him into the PSD and getting nothing. If Dodo does that, no club would ever trade with him again. And you also risk being seen as an undesirable club by player prospects in the future.

Over to you Dodo.

If he leaves you its about the direction you are headed so yes if you deny a fair trade in pursuit of winning the trade I have no doubt at all he will go to north for the money.

He is worth 20-30 you will be getting overs if you are given pick 19 should geelong/brisbane magically win the flag holding out for more is the kind of stupidity that has you losing pick 9 2019 + pick 3 2020 for Daniher and being left with pick 7 this year as a result.

Draft picks are a certainty to come good, yeah?
Depends who is using them and what does that have to do with overrating Saad's worth?

It's overrating the worth of draft picks.

You'd be ecstatic to draft a guy of Saad's ability in the late 1st/early 2nd round.
Of course but he isn't worth pick 13. He's uncontracted and wants out.

'Isn't worth it'

Aka - you think it's more likely a player better than Saad will be drafted at Pick 13?
(You're more than welcome to think that - I just disagree).
I'd rather draft Archie Perkins at pick 13 than use it on an uncontracted player whose resume really has nothing on it. But that's just me.

A kid drafted at pick 13 has 10-15 years left, how many does saad really have at his best 3-4?

This is the part of the year when we pretend first round draft busts just don't happen.

It's also part of the year we pretend Saad is worth pick 13. Have you lot not learnt from last year?

Saad is a player who has been offered a 5 year/$3 million dollar deal by multiple clubs and has never finished below 4th in the Essendon BnF. I'd be surprised if players on similar contracts were traded on average for anything lower than a late first round pick, like 13. We can sit here and bullshit about how good supporters on the bench think he is but at the end of the day, money talks and the contract offers in front of him clearly suggest he's a far better player than what half this thread would like to pretend.

If he was contracted I'd be on the same page as you, but he's not.

Pick 7 could be 12-13 on draft day. If Crouch and Daniher go, bids to JUH, Campbell, Jones and McInnes come early. Geelongs pick 13 blows out to 19 which I wouldn’t except. 12 the starting range for Saads value.
I never understand this argument as the academy players aren't really counted for teams without academy players. You wouldn't have a shot at those players anyway so who cares in the pick is 7 or 13? It effectively works out the same as those five players weren't in contention for your club

Someone do the research for me and tell me how many Pick 13s have gone on to play 15yrs of AFL footy?
Or going by that logic, Saad is only 26...so he should have 9 years left, if we follow the upper echelon of your numbers there...

So if Carlton got Green with Pick 10 last year he wouldn't be allowed to play?

It still speaks to the actual value representation of the pick. People speak as though all picks are equal year to year and are disembodied from the actual players their draft. Pick 7 isn’t getting you a chance at a Bailey Smith or Ben King. It’s a weak draft that has little under 18 form lines, and it is also significantly compromised. This is a little better than a shot in the dark. There will likely be players better than Saad taken after his pick in this draft but the data available doesn’t fill me confidence in finding them.

From a risk mitigation perspective, Dodoro should hold onto Saad should he not be confident of the talent available at the offered pick.

I don't like the argument either, the logic of it annoys me.

In theory I suppose it means that your pick 7 now gets you the 13th best player in the draft. But if you couldn't draft five of them anyway......

Sure but Saad Saad is out of contract so he can't.

GWS would match and always would. Greene was never going to carlton. You've missed my point. Clubs should defs select other clubs academy players to make them pay up, however I can't think of a club who hasnt matched in the first round. This means that first round academy players are basically off the table for other clubs so it doesn't matter if your pick slides, you haven't missed out on anyone you would have had a chance at. The same groups of kids you were considering would potentially be at your pick.

OMG ! I finally found the trade haggling ring-a-rose thread of this off season !

Please Adam Saad, please DO NOT sign anything at all ! this baby is just warming up !

Could draft a patty cripps with pick 13. Its a gamble but one where a team could be alot better off
