Adelaide AFL 2024 Midseason Draft

Honest question to those who watch our SANFL team. Is Toby Murray any good?
He’s solid, moves better than you think especially when the ball is below his knees, has a unique real straight back style which can be deceiving when judging his mobility, also proactive in seeking out a contest like his brother. I was trying to think of who he reminded me of in the forward line and the best I could come up with was he plays a little like a less spring-heeled poor man’s Jack Riewoldt with some Jye Amiss traits thrown in.

Still has lots to work on though, looked a bit lost when pushing up higher up the ground, ball in hand is probably his biggest issue though real pokey kick & his ball drop is really poor, so his kicking in general is a big work on, also does get sucked into looking for body contact in marking contests so doesn’t clunk as many marks that he probably needs too being 200cm tall.

Imho, YES!

Still a bit raw but has good skills for a big fella. Takes a strong mark, tidy kick and his ruck work is OK. With Himmelberg and Thilthorpe unavailable until after the bye, he would be a real chance to debut.
Saying he’s a tidy kick is very much a stretch, his kicking is not overly flash at all, it was especially poor in the Centrals game.

Wouldn't mind us having a look at 206cm athletic Ruckman Ajang Kol Mun a Kenyan born Sudanese refugee who only switched from soccer last year and lit up the Geelong Football and Netball League for cellar dwellers Anakie. This led to a host of VFL clubs chasing him for season 2024 eventually signing with Geelong VFL where he's showing great potential for someone with his limited background in aussie rules.. I doubt there's any player with more untapped potential available in this MSD.
Absolutely the sort of player we should have a look at, particularly in the MSD.
Also absolutely the sort we definitely won’t consider. At all.

I think he could become a winger and replace Jones

The only way we should be looking at Kobe Ryan or any other mid in the MSD would be if we have already pencilled in using our 2024 1st rounder on a high end proven AFL talent and even then is Ryan an upgrade on Dowling or Edwards who could also play wing...especially Dowling or even a Ryan already on our list. The 2024 draft 1st round is laden with potential high end mids.

these boys often take a while to develop so this would be a good choice for a mid season draft like this.

i gather how many players we take will be governed on who is left in the mix. It seems most teams are chasing the same players.
Haha remember me telling you many weeks ago I thought Geordie Payne would be our target long before the media had hardly mentioned him, probably still No.1 on our list but he'll be long gone now unfortunately.

Not sure potential wise but he’s performing as well as Downing in the sanfl and more consistently. We could easily put jones in the back line and put him on a wing or rotation in the middle.
It will have nothing to do with who we draft or trade for this year

If Taylor has done his ACL (I really hope he hasn't), then it might be Ryan's ticket onto our list.

I think Ryan could play that Murphy HF/mid role and perform well.

Hamish looking at one or maybe 2. Disappointing imho. Wont pick to make SANFL team better.

Are the recruiters worried about appearances?

Eg if we scattergun things and pick three players up, crossing our fingers hoping one works out is the sign of an uncertain recruiter

Whereas selecting one with laser-like precision shows a recruiter who has got it all figured out

I'd argue no. It's probably more along the lines of 'why waste resources on a guy you don't believe in?'. Especially if you're not going for an experienced body, it's probably going to take a year to get them up to snuff, so you need a 2025 list spot to support them.

Definitely not. It will be an edict from the club to not select any player they don't think is worth the expenditure of resources.

However, I do sometimes wonder why the club is so worried about "resources". Given there is a salary cap that the poorer clubs can reach, we should essentially have unlimited resources.

If we can't afford to throw $60k or whatever it is for a six month contract plus whatever few additional man-hours it takes to coach them, then that's pretty sad.
