I am hearing you. I have been bullish on him from last year and were rapped he got to us. I think once he gets a couple of preseasons into him, as long as we can keep him from wanting to go to port, he will become a good quality defender for us

Why would he go to Port?

They had their chance.

Went along this morning - pretty good crowd for an SANFL trial match.

Some thoughts on the game and what else I managed to hear after speaking to a few people at the game.

The GOOD

Tom Doedee got through the game well. Played reasonably well. Is the ultimate teammate and leader. The amount of time you see him talking to players, encouraging etc... is exceptional. He goes out of his way to engage with players, including top-up players. Tom is carrying an injury however (I won't say what). It won't stop him playing round 1, but will hamper him a little.

Lynch was Lynch. Some good things, some dumb things. Zero defence.

Murphy was ok, but nothing to say he should be playing AFL.

I was impressed with Strachan. Had a great go. Competed hard, tackled, took marks and really had a crack. Got caught HTB a few times trying to break free though. Needs to learn to handball in the clinch, not try to kick. At least one of the HTB was thanks to teammates selling him into trouble though.

Worrell definitely has something. Good size, likes to be physical, uses his athleticism well. As his confidence grows he will become a really attacking weapon from half back. Not quite there yet, but he's not far away. If he reaches his potential, he could be top level.

Gollant was good. A bit like Worrell in that he's not ready for AFL yet, but you can definitely see what he is capable of. 12-18 months time, he could be a quality AFL player.

Pedlar was good for most of the game.Tough bugger who attacks the ball with a relish. Likes it physical. Will play AFL.

Himmelberg was good for most of the game.

Borlase was good. Reads the ball well. Not sure what his AFL position is, but has something.

Young Nelligan played well for Norwood. He's small, but a talented player and had an impact on the game.

A couple of the top up players looked good, especially in the backlines.

The Not So Good

Hately was poor. He made a few in close handballs that were elite level, but the rest of his game was awful. Fumbled a lot. Initiated contact with his opponent, then fell over a lot. Gave away two really dumb free kicks for no reason. Most concerningly, played with zero intensity. Looked like he was playing with the intention of ensuring he was good to play again next week, rather than winning contests today. Disappointing.

McAsey. Was solid, but that's it. Had a few ok moments, but is physically still weak. Gets pushed out of every marking contest with little to no effort. I can say that the young fella was late getting back for the start of pre-season as his Dad had a heart attack and had to be resuscitated. Has a lot going on in his head. Hope he is able to come out the other side.

Newchurch did nothing for 99% of the game. The 1% he did was amazing, but he just doesn't get involved enough. Likes to 'reach' for the ball rather than getting his body in line with it. Doesn't tackle or get anywhere near enough to apply defensive pressure. Wth his speed he should be having more impact on the defensive side of the game.

Wright ended up costing us the game with an awful decision to kick in to the middle of the ground. He kicked it to the worst spot on the ground and put it to the wrong side of Himmelberg. The turn over ended up in a goal. As a Captain, he should know much better than that.

The Atrocious

Out of Norwood's first 5 goals, 4 were from free kicks. I'm not sure we had a single free kick in our F50, but they certainly did.

I also forgot to mention - our fitness level is a real concern. This was our second outing, but Norwood's first.
Yet it was our AFL listed players that were cramping through the game. Pedlar, Newchurch, Worrell and others were all cramping. I don't think I saw a single Norwood player cramp. Not a great sign.

Fitness isn't a real concern....YET.

They did..but dad might be in his ear considering his pedigree. But then again serves darryl right for not planning the birth right (ie having him overseas..not that he would have known the ramifications at the time ) and deciding to NOT live in a port zone for SANFL club alignment
I doubt it,

If he's as good as he looks like he's gonna be, we'll lock him in soon enough

I thought Daisy is comfortable with the Crows picking up his son & remaining in Adelaide.

James is his own man, and his dad would understand the system well.

The only reason James is an AFL player at the moment is because we chose him (and Newchurch) over Edwards. No other side wanted him and they all had opportunity to select him as we deemed both players to not be worth a main list spot. In the end of the day, your kid having a career and living out his dream is much more important then what colours they wear.

His dad might never become a crows supporter, but to say "oh he'll make James a Port player" is just paranoia for the sake of it. If James ends up at Port it'll be because we've undervalued him, they've overvalued him, or he's failed here and they're looking for some cheap media points for a year or so.

The better he is the more port might think they made a mistake and might try to lure him?

It was just a flippant comment i made but no doubt it will stick in the craw of port if james goes on to bigger and better things with us. I think he has the tools to make a good AFL career
That comment wasn't purely directed at you mate. The point I was trying to make was that some of the old Magpies greats have trouble with the idea that the Power claim the Magpies history as their own.
