AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Aren't you like 65? How do you know this?LOL Kardashian is 5ft 1"
Nick's said some players out of the SANFL would probably be in round 1. Based on your report it sounds like Doedee and Himmelberg at this stage with Pedlar not far off. Worrell maybe later in the year.Went along this morning - pretty good crowd for an SANFL trial match.
Some thoughts on the game and what else I managed to hear after speaking to a few people at the game.
The GOOD
Tom Doedee got through the game well. Played reasonably well. Is the ultimate teammate and leader. The amount of time you see him talking to players, encouraging etc... is exceptional. He goes out of his way to engage with players, including top-up players. Tom is carrying an injury however (I won't say what). It won't stop him playing round 1, but will hamper him a little.
Lynch was Lynch. Some good things, some dumb things. Zero defence.
Murphy was ok, but nothing to say he should be playing AFL.
I was impressed with Strachan. Had a great go. Competed hard, tackled, took marks and really had a crack. Got caught HTB a few times trying to break free though. Needs to learn to handball in the clinch, not try to kick. At least one of the HTB was thanks to teammates selling him into trouble though.
Worrell definitely has something. Good size, likes to be physical, uses his athleticism well. As his confidence grows he will become a really attacking weapon from half back. Not quite there yet, but he's not far away. If he reaches his potential, he could be top level.
Gollant was good. A bit like Worrell in that he's not ready for AFL yet, but you can definitely see what he is capable of. 12-18 months time, he could be a quality AFL player.
Pedlar was good for most of the game.Tough bugger who attacks the ball with a relish. Likes it physical. Will play AFL.
Himmelberg was good for most of the game.
Borlase was good. Reads the ball well. Not sure what his AFL position is, but has something.
Young Nelligan played well for Norwood. He's small, but a talented player and had an impact on the game.
A couple of the top up players looked good, especially in the backlines.
The Not So Good
Hately was poor. He made a few in close handballs that were elite level, but the rest of his game was awful. Fumbled a lot. Initiated contact with his opponent, then fell over a lot. Gave away two really dumb free kicks for no reason. Most concerningly, played with zero intensity. Looked like he was playing with the intention of ensuring he was good to play again next week, rather than winning contests today. Disappointing.
McAsey. Was solid, but that's it. Had a few ok moments, but is physically still weak. Gets pushed out of every marking contest with little to no effort. I can say that the young fella was late getting back for the start of pre-season as his Dad had a heart attack and had to be resuscitated. Has a lot going on in his head. Hope he is able to come out the other side.
Newchurch did nothing for 99% of the game. The 1% he did was amazing, but he just doesn't get involved enough. Likes to 'reach' for the ball rather than getting his body in line with it. Doesn't tackle or get anywhere near enough to apply defensive pressure. Wth his speed he should be having more impact on the defensive side of the game.
Wright ended up costing us the game with an awful decision to kick in to the middle of the ground. He kicked it to the worst spot on the ground and put it to the wrong side of Himmelberg. The turn over ended up in a goal. As a Captain, he should know much better than that.
The Atrocious
Out of Norwood's first 5 goals, 4 were from free kicks. I'm not sure we had a single free kick in our F50, but they certainly did.
I also forgot to mention - our fitness level is a real concern. This was our second outing, but Norwood's first.
Yet it was our AFL listed players that were cramping through the game. Pedlar, Newchurch, Worrell and others were all cramping. I don't think I saw a single Norwood player cramp. Not a great sign.
NS would agree.
Yep.is that Newchurch??
You're starting to see more key defenders be slightly smaller - Jonas, Grimes etc. I guess they have the leap to spoil taller players and the ability to rebound.Probably not a KPD at AFL level at 192cm. He does have a very handy 200cm wingspan though.
Teams do have structures, though. You can't just whack players out there.Given that there's no maximum number of good players allowed, that's a choice we don't need to make
Typically we do box ourselves in with these sort of calls though to justify squeezing a kid out
They drafted Ollie Lord instead of him.Why would he go to Port?
They had their chance.
Same way any 10 - 99 year old would....Google....even you who has been known to quote stats on occasions.....and I'm sure they're all not running around in that brilliant brain of yours.Aren't you like 65? How do you know this?
I think we may have our next grand final sprinter. Good goal.
Probably on perceived upside especially physically and Lord is genuine KPP height....looked pretty decent in the trial game as well considering he played no footy at all in 2020.They drafted Ollie Lord instead of him.
I hope I have some hobbies when I'm retired.Same way any 10 - 99 year old would....Google....even you who has been known to quote stats on occasions.....and I'm sure they're all not running around in that brilliant brain of yours.
Kelly out for Worrell does stuff all to our structureTeams do have structures, though. You can't just whack players out there.
I hope you do....can I suggest for you macrame, handicrafts or maybe cake decorating?I hope I have some hobbies when I'm retired.
Even if Kelly doesn't play we've got many many defenders.Kelly out for Worrell does stuff all to our structure
There's space there if we wantEven if Kelly doesn't play we've got many many defenders.
If those guys play upfield and they will all do so at some point, you've still got a bunch of other guys called forwards we've got to fit.... And the majority of them are all younger players. There's space there if we want
All of Sholl, Hamill and Smith can play further up the field.
It will only be a case of "too many defenders" if we insist on picking Seedsman, on trying Lynch on a wing, on bringing back D Mac when fit. Then there won't be a spot for Worrell. Only because of other poor selections. We needlessly create a situation where there's no room for him then claim there's nothing else we could have done.
You can try to pre-emptively excuse it any way you like but none has any credence whatsoever.
If we have any courage and are serious about the rebuild we'll pick Worrell. If it's the same gutless garbage we will find an excuse not to.
Has the leopard changed its spots?
