If the Demons lose, the heartache would be immense.

The Doggies have 2016 and have already had an amazing finals run. I don't think a loss here would be as shattering as it would be for the Dees.

Best 2 teams all year. Shame the Dogs had to stumble at the end of the season and go through us in the semi but I'm happy we provided the best finals game of the season.

only 21 years. They're having another go before Carlton and North even, by a year

I've just noticed something - the last GF either Carlton or North made was against each other. Was there some voodoo sh*t put on these two teams that year? It was an average GF so not surprised if it was.

Also, the time before last that Melbourne made a GF was 1988 - 12 years before the 2000 GF, which is the inverse of the the 21 years between now and the last GF they made? Spooky? Not really. I'm just trying to make up bullshit links between events and pretending some mysterious force will determine the outcome of football match. Move along
It’s the best side we have had since the golden era though. In both 88 and 2000 no one gave us a chance and rightly so. It’s realistically the first true chance we have had since ‘64.

After Friday night I didn't think it would matter who out of Port or Dogs won as Melbourne would be too strong. Then two things happened. First it was revealed that about half a dozen Cats players had a virus last week. Then we go out and demolish Port on their home deck. The result is, now I'm not so certain of the outcome.

A lot has been said about our midfield but I think the Dees are just as strong. Oliver, Petracca, Viney and Brayshaw are guns, but Harmes and Neal-Bullen have taken their game to the next level. Dogs have a top six of Bont, Libba, Macrae, B.Smith, Dunkley and Treloar. Its a really even match-up.

Happened to the Saints 2 years in a row (2009 & 2010).
Never have I felt as sad for an oppo team than the first 2010 GF. I think everyone knew what was going to happen the following week.

It should never have gone to a replay.
When Farren Ray threw the ball away instead of handing it over to the player the Pies rightfully were awarded a 50m penalty that resulted in 6 points.
When a Collingwood player did the exact same thing later in the game, nothing. No opportunity for the Saints to get 6 points, or even a behind would have changed the result.
Decisions by umpires during tightly fought games make a difference.

Don't have to tell me twice...

All the talk will be of how good Oliver and Petracca are, Maxy, Lever & May - but the danger man for us is Brayshaw. His ability to cut off the switch is probably the best in the compeition and in the first game this year he was outstanding regardless of what the stats say. We simply have to make him accountable and take his influence out of the game.
I’m going to go as far as saying he’s probably the most effective player no one understands. Thanks for the post as I’ve been thinking about this for months.

Am not at all confident. Its hard to get a gauge after those prelim displays, Geelong did put up a contest for at least some of Friday night, where Port just rolled over and let the Dogs take turns, so I feel Melbourne might have an advantage there. Otherwise hard to separate these teams on paper. Only uncertain factor I can think of is the quarantine period for the Dogs, whether that puts them off their preparation while our boys are able to train and prepare normally?

At the very least, I guess if we do have to lose a GF, it’s not to the likes of Hawthorn or Geelong but a fellow battler club. So long as umpiring ain’t a factor and we contest the game well, I could live with losing to the Dogs.

Suit yourself. Not sure how you could judge me based on those comments and given I’ve no reason to lie.
Mate you are one of about three people I respect on here in terms of strategy of the game.

Its going to come down to this as I wrote ij

1) System

Dees better

2) Battle hardened

50/50. Yes Dogs have has a tougher run but Melbourne fought back from 44 points down and make no mistake that’s when they announced themselves as a champion team.

3) Belief.

Im going to give this to the Dogs. Every team has a form slump in a year and the Dogs couldn’t have had there’s at a more perfect time. They are in red hot form and full of belief. No one can underestimate that win in Brisbane who played unbelievably and still lost.

Melbourne are better. Plain and simple.

Game changers, Oliver, Petracca and Gawn

Possible best defence ever in Lever, May and Salem (which wins GF’s btw)

Lastly they have a whole bunch of players who can impact things too and fly under the radar. Fritsch, Langdon, Spargo and Pickett.

But the Dogs have two things.

Massive belief and speed. Speed if they have the guts to use it without fear is capable of stopping your defensive setup, breaking your zone and your midfield isn’t the fastest around.

Genuine 50/50 and haven’t been this excited since 2008 where I concreted in a sign to the side of the Geelong Freeway.

Agree. Bulldogs by 30-45. They just have so many influential and impactful midfielders. They are essentially a team of midfielders. They cover the ground so well and use the ball so competently. Beverage has mirrored Hawthorn in that he has a team of pure footballers. They’ll be hard to stop. We will keep up for 2.5 quarters but they’ll blow it away.
Jesus christ please stop.
