Poor ol Saints suffered a bit with unfit players, it really dampened their i50 opps. Though to their credit they hung around in what was mostly an uninspiring game. I was helped a bit by a strange fellow seated next to me who would call out white rabbit each time a call went the wrong way. I don't think the umps have worn white for a decade or so. The chap was possibly colour blind which made me wonder as to the challenges of watching footy and sailing ships.

Hodge provided good insight though on the transistor when he explained the best way to deal with a depleted oppo is to do the opposite to move the ball fast, but to move the ball slowly and surely keeping possession forcing them to chase and run in vain, tiring them further. Well done Luke.

We couldn't get outta 2nd all night. We have some major issues going on that need to be rectified. I can see us dropping the next 3 games against actually good teams if we don't get our stuff together. Saints lucky to be that close to be fair.

I would say the Saints were lucky to be that close, the outcome may have been different if they hadn't lost multiple players

At the ground Hill was really inconsistent re getting to contests. Concerning when the Saints have just come off the bye.

When it was 22 v 22 St. Kilda were 2 goals up. You can cover being 1 rotation down. Maybe even 2 but not 3. Might not have won but any chance we had was gone by early in the 3rd quarter.

It's emerging that Hill was crook. On that effort clearly he should not have played and no doubt he had an absolute stinker. But he but he has had an excellent season so the pile on (including from Saints ‘fans’) is unjustified.

Him being unwell makes sense. Didn’t look right watching him live.

The risk taken to carry sick players into a game is bizarre. Even more so if it’s a midfielder whose running and aerobic capacity would be significantly depleted - Petracca and Hill obvious examples. Obviously when for they can be damaging, but leaving them in renders them a liability to their teammates.

Yeh I wasn't aware of that till I got home.

We do generally come home strong. Had we kicked straight the saints weren't in it.

You certainly are a stronger side at home.

Never bought into the raw numbers of scoring shots, as the game changes completely from scoring a point versus a goal, but the Saints did have more scoring shot at halftime, before they started to lose players.

Think it could be an interest new thread, to discuss with how the AFL could improve the equality in-game with players going down, as it would be a disastrous look if a side lost say 4 players come half time in a GF

Maybe. Cant see a solution to that unless we have another 6 subs on the bench like basketball. Not sure that's the answer to your query.

Am I reading correct that saints took in sick and underdone players? If that's the case then it's probs not surprising some went down/couldn't run the game out.

Can't say I agree with the scoring shots though. Scoring shots show where the balls been and how effectively its been used forward of centre. If one team has 10 ish more scoring shots its safe to say they have had a fair bit more of it forward of centre.

Kudos to saints for getting a few sneaky hands in on some of our scoring shots to stop the goal.

I think we ran the game out really well considering we're coming off a perth trip and St Kilda were coming off a bye. Pretty impressed with Berry's tackling and Coleman coming out of the backline. At the same time I really thought St Kilda were the better team for long periods and if they didn't get the injuries they had, would have gone right down to the wire. I was really impressed with the way they organised their backline and rebounded out.

BTW crowd was 26 which isn't bad considering Broncos have won 7 straight, are top 4 and only got 28.

I think scoring shots are an excellent indicator of the way a game is shaping, though not perfect nor complete. It cuts straight to the chase - scoring opps created / denied, which along with scoring goals is the aim of the game. Most other stats are indirect measurements from which extrapolation is required.

Entertainment as a priority will push the game to manufacture strategies to even out discrepant performances, cutting off the hard edges of misfortune. Topping up the bench is the obvious answer. I personally prefer less fiddling, but with crowds and audiences needed, that's the way it goes.
